These were actually rather generous, considering that this is the basically the same program she skated in 1997, only with different music (the only difference is a triple toe in the second combo--in 1997 she did a double axel and added a solo 3T at the end). But so much for "feeling the music."
For you youngins’, the scores back then were all about placement. Judges determined which skater should be 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. and then scored accordingly. If a specific judge scored Tara above Michelle, he/she was saying Tara deserved first place. It was a highly subjective system that led to a lot of sketchy judging. Especially back during the days of the Soviet Union.

I am a big Michelle kwan admirer so it pains me to say this, but no she should not have. Tara's program was more difficult and more challenging. Tara also improved on her artistry in her skating and it shows. To add to that, Tara's technicality was superior. I understand maybe Michelle is your favorite to watch (mine too) but sometimes our favorites don't actually get first place. Tara had a riskier program and she pulled it off. I am not some fan of Tara's, I'm just being as objective as possible. I think Tara was more ambitious and she went after what she wanted until she got it.

She has landed the triple loop triple loop flawlessly many times, but this was her worst one! She was an amazing talent and was one of the few female skaters to land 2 triple triples in a program. Nonetheless, I miss her bubbly energy and the competitive drive both she and Michelle had which is seriously lacking with our current ladies.
Or, in another more accurate way, Tara won the gold and sadly Michelle fans will have to deal with that instead of stewing on it forever. I actually like both skaters so am not being biased in my opinion that the gold was Tara's and not just for the jumps. Michelle did not skate with the same fluidity and joy that she did at Nationals, if she had, she probably would have won. But Tara skated with a freedom and lightness that complimented the athleticism and, IMO, thoroughly deserved the win.
How does that sloppy program deserve 5.9s? I don’t understand the scoring system if 6 is a perfect score and that mess of a program was deemed almost perfect.
This always confused people and is one reason that this scoring system was horrible. The marks don't mean anything outside the current competition. They essentially ranked the skaters. If you skated last and did better than everyone else, you could be awarded a 6 even if not perfect. A 5.9 at one competition didn't equal a 5.9 at another competition. The marks were not the same as points, they were called ordinals. It was cooky and led to easier favoritism by judges.
