Lyrics
[Intro]
I hate purity. I hate goodness. I don't want virtue to exist anywhere. I want everyone corrupt
[Verse 1]
I am an architect
They call me a butcher
I am a pioneer
They call me primitive
I am purity
They call me perverted
Holding you but I only miss these things when they leave
[Pre-Chorus]
I am idiot drug hive, the virgin, the tattered and the torn
Life is for the cold made warm and they are just lizards
Self disgust is self-obsession honey and I do as I please
A morality obedient only to the cleansed repented
[Chorus]
I am stronger than Mensa
Miller and Mailer, I spat out Plath and Pinter
I am all the things that you regret
A truth that washes that learnt how to spell
[Verse 2]
The first time you see yourself
Naked you cry
Soft skin now acne
Foul breath so broken
He loves me truly
This mute solitude I'm draining
I know I believe in nothing but it is my nothing
[Pre-Chorus]
Sleep cannot hide thoughts splitting through my mind
Shadows aren't clean, false mirrors too many people awake
If you stand up like a nail then you will be knocked down
I've been too honest with myself I should have lied like everybody else
[Chorus]
I am stronger than Mensa
Miller and Mailer, I spat out Plath and Pinter
I am all the things that you regret
A truth that washes that learnt how to spell, how to spell
[Guitar Solo]
[Outro]
So damn easy to cave in, man kills everything
So damn easy to cave in, man kills everything
So damn easy to cave in, man kills everything
So damn easy to cave in, man kills everything
"Self disgust is self obsession honey and I do as I please!"
Rickey's most intimate lyrical writing, that's why this album is flawless!
One of those lyrics that are the artist saying something you never knew but always felt
Whenever great guitarists are discussed; Bradfield is never mentioned. Why is that. Guy is awesome
He suffered because he came to prominence during a time where Solos were a bit out of fashion I think. He's underrated as a singer aswell.
Becaus they are ritarded Morans 😀😃😄😁
Richie is never mentioned as a fuckin posuer either?
The man is a lyrical genius and a special guitar player.
@@rosspurchase9022 a genius maybe....he's a guitar player on the level of Sid Vicious
You can't deny that some of Richey's lyrics are some of the greatest lyrics ever written.
Agreed, and the most harrowing.
Michael Mitchell
Totally
In my opinion The Holy Bible has the greatest lyrics ever. Even if you don't agree with them, you must admit that it's extremely fascinating to see what it was like in Richey's mind. The Holy Bible is my all time favourite album and I can't imagine ever liking another album more. People say it's the most depressing album of all time, it personally makes me happy, except for the thought of how it ended with Richey. For so long I thought I was alone, but then I discovered The Holy Bible by Manic Street Preachers.
the first time I heard 4st 7lb I felt sick to my stomach and thought I might throw up, I do love the album though
I've still got the original cd I bought in the summer of 94 one of the darkest albums I've ever heard , and i was no stranger to darkness I was in a death metal band at the time but with beautiful songs like this is yesterday and she is suffering, did something to me that album, I've never been the same since and I grew up in view of the Severn bridge....
"I've been too honest with myself, I should have lied like everybody else"
amazing
Hupsibasse this song spoke to me like nothing I'd ever heard when I was a teenager
I heard it in my early 20s, couldn't believe it, like nothing else I'd heard.
Hupsibasse perfect x
That’s a line and a half, pity Richey couldn’t of hung around.
@@simonc6600 I also heard this in my early 20's and always touches me when hear it 25 yrs later
This album was exceptional for it's rage, discontent and brutal critique of the human condition. Nothing compares.
+pink moon nothing will ever come close either
What about the lyrics, the riffs, the melodies, the drums too?
It was the sound of someone going right to the very edge in the same way that Closer and In Utero were, and all three are absolute classics from a very dark place.
pink moon, best comment ever.
pink moon - You're so damn right. An exceptional record, without any worthy continuation.
Incredible how Bradfield got all those words out and in time...
That man’s ability to turn lyrics like Of Walking Abortion and Mausoleum into hooks is unrivalled
because he's a KING.
Was thinking the same thing.
You should hear him on the song P.C.P, even more impressive how he gets all the words out there
Richie was just at a incredible level of dark lyrical genius here but James’s ability as an arranger of music is incredible too
A perfect storm.
"I've been too honest with myself, I should have lied like everybody else."
Probably my favourite lyric of all time.
RIP Richey we still love you
is he dead?......no....i think he went in hiding.....
@@galas062 I hope he's out there somewhere fine.
I like how angry James sounds here, with the lyrics full of despair by Ritchie. The song and the whole Holy Bible album cheers me up whenever I am in difficult times of life.
If only we had a genius like Richey Edwards to give us lyrics to describe these dark days. You're missed, Richey, wherever you are.
He already did on this very album ( Holy Bible) p.c.p he absolutely fucking hated political correctness and virtue signalling bastards.
He would've hated the way liberals , the house of lords wealth and privilege are sneering trying to beat down the working class AGAIN. Don't think for one moment he would've supported your fucking stuck up middle class politically correct remoaner shit.
Tim Fisher yeh his lyrics still apply so..
@ mojopin 70 He was not a false teef old git like you he was continental unlike you incontinent dumbass.
You think he would’ve supported brexit? Then you don’t know richey, listen to little baby nothing, look at the phrases richey covered the video with.
2023, I just listened the first seconds of this song, ang got hooked up inmediatly. Here I go entire album
Fr exactly!
Great band!!!
I loved this song as a teenager, and I still do. Now in my mid 40s I know the poetry and having lost a brother to suicide; it breaks my heart.
I'm so sorry for your loss.
@@NickNightfall1711 thank you, it was 30 years ago now; that kind of loss is something you never get over.
"I've been too honest with myself, I should have lied like everybody else..." I did like that one.
Ain’t it great
The Holy Bible is their masterpiece. Total 10 out of 10 album.
RIP John Hurt. Only you could deliver the opening lines to this song.
I recognized John Hurts voice straight away but I can't place the film. Is it 1984?
@@ricchardo Yes, correct. 1984. Great film.
It never fails to amaze me that an album of such seething, spitting rage like The Holy Bible can also be super melodic...
I've lost count of how many times I've gone back to this video today.
1st 3 manics albums are ........... expletives aside.... amazing
@@OlafMcKrak wdym expletives aside?
Never been much of a Manics fan. But this is a great song.
A Black Hole of an album. Once you get pulled into it's gravity, you'll never escape it again. Beautiful and Horrifying at the same time. RIP Richey, we miss you
A classic. 10/10
Exactly
"I am stronger than Mensa, Miller and Mailer, I spat out Plath and Pinter" is still one hell of a flex.
If the stories are true about Holy Bible. Then Richey wrote the majority of the songs while under psychiatric care due to his self harming and alcoholic ways. He was a genius, and one I'm grateful I got to meet as 13 year old. The band themselves were a huge influence on me from the moment I heard New art riot. They challenged me to pick up books so I could understand what they were writing about. They got me interested in politics, history things I'd would never have been taught in school. They are more than just a band, they sent out powerful political messages that inspired the youth of Wales who we're looking to someone to be a voice for them. They were never in the industry for fame or fortune and that's why they've never been elevated to the status that has been afforded the like of Oasis, Coldplay and the likes. They are the one band that have been given the licence to do what they want, how they want because us few die hard followers will always buy they're stuff and sell out they're gigs because we understand where they came from and what they trying to do. But however hard it is for mainstream music industry and media to accept them they can't help but love them. "YOU LOVE US!"
They are highly respected in the music media, however. They have been consistently loved since the Richey Edward days by Q. Of course, you could make the point that they ought to sell more albums, but they are among the only bands from the '90s onwards, from Britain, whose new albums always wind up in the top twenty album sales. You could say, "Well, what's your point?" My point is that Manic Street Preachers are actually a highly respected and very commercially succesful band. In the current climate of political correctness processed, antiseptic and derivative pop and rock they shouldn't be. Thankfully, they are.
I have a similar story. They were the first band I went to see, when Motown Junk was the new single, and as a 16 year old managed to befriend Richey. I met up with him at loads of their Scottish gigs for the next couple of years and we always exchanged books, so I've got a nice little stash of books Richey gave me, all with slogans and bits of poetry written inside. Such a great guy, always happy to share his time.
Hi man a bit late but what books they reccomended
I'd say "Leviathan" (like the song) or "Rumble Fish" by S.E. Hinton and something from Harold Pinter.
Mark Williams One of the greatest comments ever written for one of the greatest albums.
A modern day work of art. The whole album will never be forgotten.
The greatest song of all time and written by the greatest lyricist of all time.
+John Hughes Nobody comes close!!
+Murmeltier616 I feel you bro. I love Ian and his lyrics, but there's such a brutal honesty and impact to Richey's writings, as opposed to Ian's more abstract and mysterious lyrics.
No, Ian Curtis wasn't better than RIchey, lyrics-wise.
that's a very bold statement dude, but sometimes - like right now - I think you may be right.
I think yes just edges it lyrically but faster is indeed the most complete song ever written I believe, truly a transformative moment for music.
Richeys words resonate today and they always will
F a c t s !
Happy Birthday Richey. Everybody loves you
I know I believe in nothing but it's my nothing.
One of my favourite lyrics by my favourite band.
+Cally Gent My next tattoo!
Cally Gent Gorgeous
Yourself is incredible too. Touches a raw nerve with me a few times.
Your ritual everyday
A mild shower soak in aftershave
Best clothes do your best
Look in the mirror go on
Belittle yourself yourself yourself
Belittle yourself yourself yourself
[Chorus]
You go on day after day
Dreaming on a lie
That you keep locked inside
Of yourself
Yourself
Yourself
Of yourself
Yourself
Yourself
[Verse 2]
Can you sleep tonight
Cast aside for some pouting young pup
Sink into a slurred veneer
Alcoholic haze so now
Least you can like yourself yourself
Least you can like yourself yourself
[Chorus]
You go on day after day
Reservoirs of guilt
That your fixed grin always hides
And yourself
Yourself
Yourself
Of yourself
Yourself
Yourself
And yourself
Yourself
Yourself
Of yourself
Yourself
Yourself
[Verse 3]
You look at ads all day
Everyone is perfect and you're so lame
Free scent burns your skin
But no smell can really cover sin
Too many teenage holes to fill
Too many teenage holes to fill
[Chorus]
You go on day after day
Speak to your despised
Blanking your loved ones
And yourself
Yourself
Yourself
And yourself
Yourself
Yourself
And yourself
There's an ease with which James moves between the kind of normal singing voice and the rock scream which is so exciting, and I think quite rare.
Richey; a tragic loss but an indelible mark on songwriting and literary work. A lyrical poet laureate 💜
1:25 that look from Richey at the camera is like he is looking into your soul...can see the depression in his eyes.
Yes...
Damn
Yeah.An inner sadness is definately present.Bless his soul. His legacy is priceless.
Probably one of my absolute fave msp songs. The lyrics are totally florid and f******g amazing. JDB’s delivery leaves me breathless every time. Rough , raw and certainly 4 real.
So true
.Missing person....Richey Edwards, 1st Feb 1995, he was an intelligent guy academically, well read, good with words, BUT he couldn't find a way to live, he couldn't find peace of mind. You see, in life, without having peace of mind, and if you are feeling tormented by guilt, shame or just your own thoughts are driving you crazy ...then........... your life will be very hard, and it will lead to massive depression, and is some cases tragedy. Peace of mind is everything.
or perhaps nothing is everything, but many things come close...? i think the trap sometimes is that peace of mind (from the perspective of being aware of the great disaster befalling human life) can resemble capitulation towards that disaster, but it is in fact, as i think you are saying, the necessary step in also learning the way that the disaster needs to be opposed, from an 'internal' position which also then opens the way to 'external' action, thank you for that comment.
It would be the greatest thing that you could buy!!
This is one of the greatest songs ever written.
PLEASE GIVE US THIS IN HD... pure love for The Manics!
Fr
somehow I think the grittiness adds to the video
"i've been too honest with myself, i should have lied like everybody else"
This album is dark as hell, but after a few listens and adjustment you realise it’s crazy greatness
to the 5 people who disliked this....have you never heard such poetry? Do you understand the brilliance of this lyrics. I am in awe of it. Every line is purity, ever line is Richey Edwards at this best. Stripped down music, and genius from star to finish. Love the manics. :) stay beautiful xxxx
Fr, they wouldn't know!
Richey has partially inspired me to take on poetry, along with Ian Curtis, Joe Strummer, Jim Morrison, Grant Hart and many others!!!
The message of this song is more actual than it ever was.
Richey Edwards truly was a pioneer.
Every once a while i come back to binge on MSP in order to feel again. Thank you ❤️
This is their best era. great songs
One of the best albums in history for sure
One of the best albums to experience first time
Actually took me a while to fully digest the lyrics. But it really did shook me the first time
Quite possibly the greatest song ever written.
The Manic Street Preachers wrote my life... and sang it.
Absolutely perfect, this is them at their perfection
These lyrics still move me all these years later. Self disgust is self obsession honey and I do as I please.
This song is so cool! A true classic
Arguably their best song.
now ain't that just one of the most deliciously angry songs EVER
But I guess that's true for every song on "The Holy Bible". What an awesome album!
As bleak as it gets, but some harsh truths contained in those lyrics. Way ahead of it’s time, thanks Richey, the work of any great artist always lives on ❤️
One of my fav MSP songs! They are a great rock band
True
The Holy Bible was a brilliant if tragic album.
What a hit: got to trust them again
one of the best albums of all-time
THE BEST ALBUM OF THE 90'S.When this album came out it was a shock!-for those who remember
Saw them on stage T in the park in 1994. Epic live that was. One if my best days in my life so far...
Love this song. Heard it everyday in my twenties
brutal lyrics
Jesus, we had such shit in 1994 but also this and In Utero. British Rock doesn't get better than this in the 90s.
best manic song ever .....+ all others
Oooo yyeeees
"So damn easy to cave in, man kills everything" !!!
Best Manic song ever by far.
My favourite Manics song "Life is for the cold made made warm and they are just lizards"
Love the guitar work on this track...still working my way through the Manics back catalogue and hearing wonderful things...
you just stumbled upon a treasure trove...
Those lyrics... those f**king lyrics.... just outstanding!
"The first time you see yourself naked you cried/ Soft skin now acne" I can't believe this is from 1994, it sounds contemporary and rockier than many crap you hear in radios and tv nowadays
Fr
Feels more genuine!
Respect to Bradfield for fitting his vocal melodies around those unweildy lyrics. While I love the Holy Bible era, the whole project (music/lyrics/concept) feels so high strung, it's (probably deliberately) quite anxiety producing. So with Everything Must Go (although the band is dealing with grief), as a record it contrasts this sense of drama with a relaxed, free atmos.
Thank you, Sir Bad News of Barrett for introducing me to this AWESOME people.
haha I came for him too and now I love the manics
Legendary album.....
My all time favourite manic street preachers song. 3:20
This is possibly my favourite song of all time; sorry Macca, sorry Pink Floyd, sorry Clash, sorry Bob Marley.
The Clash is good too!
You have great taste! And yes, this is an amazing song!
RIP John Hurt you absolute legend
RobbieCBPBarlow
I only read 1984 a few weeks ago for the first time. As soon as I read this line in the book I immediately recognised it from the Holy Bible.
ratty860997 I had the same thing back in 2015 when I began to binge read again! I knew the opening quote to be Sir John Hurt and then I learnt that it was from 1984. Then I watched the clip on TH-cam and heard the quote and then read the book and saw the quote and the Manic Street Preachers fan within me screamed with delight (':
RobbieCBPBarlow Marilyn Manson also references 1984 in Disposable Teens with the lyrics 'A rebel from the waste down'. Which Winston says to Julia. That was the other line in the book that stood out to me and made me think. 'I've heard that line before'.
ratty860997 I've never been a fan of Marilyn Manson - I don't dislike him just never got into him really, but I do remember that quote now that you mention it! (: one of the best things about music and literature is that they're both easily dispersable between one and another and easily influential to each other too (:
1:25 Richey stare gave me goosebumps
Yeah, I can see how.
One of the most underrated bands of all time
Should watch them do this on top of the pops, its amazing.
we love you Richie x
Amazing band. Seen them live four times. Even better live!! How many bands can you say that about?!!!
Perfect time to make a comment. 666k views. What a song. So many incredible lyrics. The music never gets enough attention on this album. Just as good as the lyrics.
This sound popped into my head on the way home. Turns out it was this amazing track.
I like that they give so much attention to the lyrics in this video. JDB's singing voice isn't particularly strong on the old enunciation and Richey and Nicky's lyrics deserve all the attention they can get. Incredible!
Wonderful !!!!! Hope they keep going, it would be such a shame to lose such talent and class !

James Dean bradfield is the most underrated modern guitarist
One of the best groups around, not over-hyped like most US groups
Probably not overhyped like US bands as they are valley boyos
Lol, I'm from the US and you're kinda right.
The groups that are the least hyped up are mostly the best ones!!
James Dean Bradfield is fucking epic at guitar
I grew up on this band. I have seen them about 10 or 12 times, up until Everything Must go. They were the voice of a generation lied to and left out to dry.
God damn,what a voice. What a track!
i love these guys
Faster is aggressive, brutal and upbeat at the same time!
EXACTLY!!!
Perfectly said.

Fucking great this is what it call Rock & Roll , that guitars sounds Ace, best band on the Planet at the moment ♥️Rich
