THE USA TRAINS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY ARE SO INFERIOR. I HAVE RIDDEN THE TRAINS IN EUROPE AND CHINA FOR MANY YEARS. long distance trains don't make sense in a country with the geography of the U.S or of Canada for that matter. Europe is geographically smaller and densely populated which makes train travel sensible over longer distances. Commuter trains abound in major urban centres where the population density and resultant car gridlock make trains a good choice. @@josephkoncur6403
@@notlimey Are you blind, deaf, or lacking logic???! Long distance is FAR better than air travel, these days. Have you seen any recent news with regard to airlines, air rage, strikes, layoffs, etc?

Thank you very much for all your hard work making this video. I have thoroughly enjoyed spending my Sunday afternoon watching it with your scanner information and your descriptive dialogue. Absolutely best train journey vid I have travelled on :-) Merci beaucoup!
This was the first of your train trips I watched last Dec. 2019. I was recovering from a horrific case of pneumonia and had just gotten out of the hospital after spending 6 nights there. I was still fatigued, but I enjoyed watching this and your other train adventures from my bed at home. While I stayed home to recover, I was pleased to see other parts of the country I have never seen thanks to your great videos. I have always been interested in trains. I had previously been on the Durango-Silverton in Colorado, the Skunk train in Northern California, and the Williams, AZ, train to the Grand Canyon and back. I have never been on any Amtrak train so I was interested in the “sleeper” accommodations. Well now that I have recovered, and I am feeling much better, we now have the COVID-19 pandemic (or also known as the Corona virus). Funny since I live in Corona, CA. Our own (crown) virus. I liked when you passed through our area on one of your trips which was very familiar to me as I am a lifelong resident of Southern California (born here). I hope all this virus stuff ends soon and you can take and video more train trips. I appreciate your comments. Some of them make me giggle. I also like your narrations of trips to museums as well. I agree with you on some of the cartoonish of some, i.e., the Benjamin Franklin Museum. Take care, and keep the You Tube videos coming. Christy
Excellent video!!!! Very helpful for those of us who haven't visited this route. Very detailed trip report, really enjoyed every bit of the video. Hats off to your efforts. Last but not least thank you :-)
It was really cool seeing towns where a friend of mine lives, there in ND! I feel like i can tell her i've seen Minot from the train! I actually enjoy watching your videos and seeing areas of the country i've not had the privilege of visiting and seeing from this perspective. It's actually very relaxing! I also like and appreciate the tracking with the map. Thank you for taking us on the ride!
BTW, I am a rabid pro AMTRAK fan. So I put up with a few problems here and there. In my own defense, I always carry a roll of duct tape, (to cover the effing vents, for starters), a can of Lysol spray, a couple of rubber wedge doorstops, uber warm clothes in the winter, a power strip for my various chargers, an immersion heater, some instant soup and coffee, a few snacks, can of Planter's Peanuts (natch!), my almost 1 quart flask of Jack Daniel's, my little hip flask of same, a pack of little cigars and my metal cigar tube so I don't have to waste a whole cigar, Laptop with GPS and Street Atlas Pro Mapping program, Tablet, Cell phone, chargers, and my 2Meter/6Meter handheld Amateur radio (works as a scanner, too), Bluetooth headphones and maybe a couple of books. Since I never go anywhere without my LED Lenser flashlight, Leatherman pocket tool kit and a spare set of eyeglasses, nitroglycerin carrier, I'm ready for anything. Big suitcase for long trips goes in the bag are downstairs, and my Union Pacific railroad grip carries a change of undies, toiletries (from the hotels, natch!), bandaids, tooth pain reliever, mouthwash, antacid and heart medicine. Comfy slippers and a flannel shirt, along with the aforementioned survivor's kit. AMTRAK trips are what you make of them.
Your video was so enjoyable! Your voice is so relaxing and pleasant. Thank you so much. It was wonderful to see a part of the country I have not experienced.
Awesome videos. I have watched everyone several times. You inspire me. I took the Zephyr , then hopped on the Lakeshore to Syracuse to see my Sister 2 years ago. On the way back I took the Lakeshore back to Chicago. Then hopped on the Empire to Portland, then the Starlight to San Jose. I live in Watsonville Cal. I used to after the Air Force travel a lot. But got complacent. You reinspired me. After my other hip replacement surgery I will have in May this year I am planning a San Jose to Denver trip to celebrate. Thank you.
Will be on this train #7 as far as Whitefish Mt Oct 1-6 2022 before heading home to Tenn via City of New Orleans. Probably lots of improvements since your trip I hope & expect. Thanks for all facts and local details you give.
I love watching your train trips. I Stop watching if I don't know where the people are..Good job, I enjoy your trips every time..
I worked in the Oil Boom of the early 80's and lived South of Williston and have been to the Williston Depot. On Rt. 2 ON the Montana-North Dakota border (1:38 mins) was a bar called the "State Line Bar(?)". The bar was oriented east to west and down the middle was painted the border line and time zone line. When the bar on the North Dakota side of the line turned 2 AM (Not sure about the real time has been a long time) and when the ND State law says you can't drink anymore , you walk to the other bar in MT on the other side of the room where it is still 1AM and the booze was still flowing. It was a trip.
I actually have a lot of family that live in Williston and Dickinson, so I know that area pretty well. I live 40 minutes NW of Minneapolis, so whenever I go see family I usually take the Empire Builder from Minneapolis to Williston. It’s usually a pretty enjoyable trip.
I never been on the Empire Builder and is still on my "bucket list" of things to do. I never been to Seattle either. A lot of these long distance trains are similar with different train names. Another great video and narration! Keep up the good work.
Excellent video. In August of 2012, I took the Empire Builder from Seattle to Milwaukee, then in Milwaukee took the Hiawatha to Chicago. In Chicago, we boarded the Southwest Chef to LA and then in LA, the Coast Starlight back to Seattle, it was wonderful. It was the first time I had ever been on a train, I have been hooked ever since and hope to take another cross country train ride one of these days.
This trip is my favorite because Washington state is beautiful in the winter. Your narration makes me feel I’m there experiencing everything with you. I’ve watched 3 times and I’m sure I’ll watch many more. Thank you!
Your excellent narration motivated me to travel on the Empire Builder in August 2018. Thanks for picking up the essence of train travel, a total relaxing experience. Also your Bella Lugosi observation at the 32:00 minute mark endures. I am going to make more train adventures part of my experience. All the best.
Took this train with my grandmother 11 years ago on while on our way to Los Angeles. It was wonderful!! The trip through Glacier National Park in Montana was absolutely beautiful!!
This is fantastic, I live in the U.K. and next year I’ll be taking an Amtrak trip from New York to Niagara Falls, then onto Chicago, then across to San Fransisco - up to Seattle and back to Chicago. I can’t wait!
The Trump government has reduced service to only 3 days a week. If our stupid people in the red states don't learn to wear masks and respect the virus. I doubt you will be able to make the trip. If Trump is re elected the trains will be history in April 2021. The cars are 40 years old, with no replacements ordered. Less service will result in lower ridership and higher costs. A great excuse to finally knock them off.
@@zachwelch7016 It will work fine now, if the Senate can't block Amtrak Joe! At least we will get some new cars and there will be no more service reductions. Amtrak management has already gotten the word. GROWTH. It's just a question of when the military might have to haul Trump out of the Whitehouse . So he can fly away to Russia.
Hello Youtuba....I'm on the EBuilder now...Its everything you said it was and more. I've just got to learn how to pack lightly as you. I pick up the Coast Starlight and then the Zephyr back to Chicago....the Cardinal gets me back to my hometown.
I have taken many Amtrak long-distance trips myself, and this video captures the best reality of what they are like ... i.e. many miles of blank scenery, often times annoying problems, and occasional interesting and unique experiences that could be had nowhere else. Your hookup to the crew audio and continuous video of what's passing by outside add a lot to the authenticity of this video. Thanks .
I grew up in Illinois, moved to Colorado the day after I graduated high school. THANK THE GOOD LORD I got the heck out of there! Living out west, the quality of life is so much better. I go back to Illinois for weddings and funerals. So glad I left.
I have watched a lot of your videos and first of all, thank you for making them, it makes me want to take the trips. These videos also gives you a better idea of what the inside of the train is like, we used to think a roomette was suitable but now feel a sleeper room is better for us. I have also enjoyed the trips, it has been as if we were taking them. We were last in the US in 2006 where we visited Florida, Washington, New Hampshire, New York, Seattle, Las Vegas and La. We flew everywhere but this time I think we will go by train!

@@josephkoncur6403 last I heard there isn't that huge of demand to make a couple thousand mile high speed train across the country, wouldn't be profitable. Railroads are mostly freight here. So not having a train that goes over 150mph makes us a third world country now?

Great video, Youtuuba (as always). Love the winter light and deep winter views. My pro tip: take a small can of WD-40 to silence pesky squeaks and duct tape for latches/doors that do not stay closed. Agree on the use of alcohol wipes.
Great video!! Funny as it may be, I rode this train the opposite way (Seattle to Chicago) three days prior to the shooting of the video!! Brought back great memories.
Love your Amtrak videos. They have helped me with the few trips I have taken so far, and I am watching them all again before my Texas Eagle trip this May.
In spite of the cold and resulting problems, I find this the most interesting of all this series. Out hoist is soothingly articulate and absorbing. And while I would never live there, I find open country interesting from a moving train. I have traveled twice on gthe Cal Zepher and the Cardinal.

I have done this trip many times since the 1960's. I love Amtrak and trains in general. It is one of the best ways to see America.....keep trains alive.
Thank you for a pleasantly narrated trip. A ride that I will personally never be able to make. So many people ruin these kinds of video trips with unnecessary noises & background chatter. But I want to thank you for a very nice trip. I do hope you get an adjustment from Amtrak. I would have made the same remarks.
Great video and interesting narration! I would love to do this some day! BTW, has anyone ever told you that your voice sounds a lot like Tim Conway's? Very easy to listen to.
I did that trip in 2016. I liked the Club and Dining cars. Had a similar "Roomette" as the presenter. The train cars, of course, are "double deck", with one wash room on the top deck and three below. There is also a fairly roomy shower on the lower deck. The trip was fairly scenic, even through the Dakota's and Montana. VERY scenic going through Western Washington but a lot of that portion of the journey is at night and early morning (on the last day). The total time was a little over 44 hours.
I thought wow 2h45m, seems a lot. but it's absolutely not boring, and well commented, so much better than some other videos where this journey is summarized in stressful 20-30 minutes. most i like the Wintercascade scenery.
Took my first vacation in 11 years, took the Empire builder in September 2017, from Milwaukee to Seattle. Wasn't that interested in Seattle, but no money form divorce, but had 50,000 Amtrak points and it was the farthest I could go. So love train travel. Relaxing, enjoyable (even with holder cars). Can hardly wait for my next trip. What GPS are you using?
In late December of 1967 I boarded the City of Miami in Jackson, Tennessee at midnight on a Friday night riding to Chicago. We got to town about 8 the next morning and an hour or so later we got on the Pacific Northwestern bound for Tacoma, Washington. I was a soldier traveling to Ft. Lewis. This video reminds me a lot of that trip and brings back many memories. I was on the train to celebrate the New Year. As I remember, we only stopped twice. Once in Minneapolis and again somewhere else. We arrived in Tacoma Monday afternoon. The next day I reported to Ft. Lewis and signed in to the company area. When I turned around to leave the soldier on duty asked me where I was going and I told him I had a place off the fort and he informed me that I was confined to the company area because the fort was quarantined for meningitis. Interesting trip.
I enjoy your travel videos, especially the rail travel ones. Taking the Amtrak cross country in a sleeper is definitely on my bucket list. I'm sorry that this trip was less than ideal for you, but it was an adventure nonetheless.
A trip i took on Amtrak in a family sleeper had the same no heat problem. I'm retired Amtrak so after several hours I questioned the conductor and at a station stop we found one 480 volt connector dragging out of it connection, pointed it out to the conductor raiwho didn't hesitate but went right in and reconnected the cable the asked the engineer to retry the head end power and miracle of miracles the train powered up. R It took a few hours but the entire train came up to normal temperature.
GREAT video. When one watches all these "travel log" videos...one never see the "bad stuff". As a previous comment noted.... one feels they're riding along with you..enjoying the views ...but suffering the problems. Well....Welcome to REAL life! But all in all, despite all the problems... I'd STILL recommend the Empire to anyone.
Believe it or not, you were in a *newer* Superliner car. Superliner I has the closet, it was removed in favor of the hook on Superliner II. Of course, the quality of the room you were in was poorer than what you've seen in Superliner I's. This is because the Superliner I sleepers have been rehabilitated more recently. Hopefully in the next few years, Superliner II will get a rehab and all the cars will have the fresh look and feel. But don't expect a closet. The Viewliner doesn't have them either. Edit: after watching the full video, seems like you became aware of this by day 2 when you begin to call it an "unrestored" car.
really enjoyed this video, and loved your idea about taking a GPS and radio with you. it would be fun to listen in to the behind the scenes chat like that

Again, a GREAT contribution for us all. Be well and THANK YOU! Michael...now in Minnesota
THE USA TRAINS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY ARE SO INFERIOR. I HAVE RIDDEN THE TRAINS IN EUROPE AND CHINA FOR MANY YEARS. EXAMPLE: PARIS TO MARSEILLES IN 4 HOURS 15 YEARS AGO BUT TODAY, YOU CAN RIDE THERE IN 3 HOURS. HOW ABOUT LONDON TO PARIS AT 186 MPH. NOW LET'S GO TO SHANGHAI, CHINA WHERE YOU CAN GO FROM PUDONG INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO DOWNTOWN AT 311 MPH. th-cam.com/video/PTo-krTSZBA/w-d-xo.html NO MY FRIENDS, AMERICA IS NOT NUMBER ONE, AMERICA IS A 3RD WORLD COUNTRY. YOU WILL SEE THINGS IN CHINA THAT YOU WILL NEVER SEE IN YOUR LIFETIME.
long distance trains don't make sense in a country with the geography of the U.S or of Canada for that matter. Europe is geographically smaller and densely populated which makes train travel sensible over longer distances. Commuter trains abound in major urban centres where the population density and resultant car gridlock make trains a good choice.

@@notlimey Are you blind, deaf, or lacking logic???! Long distance is FAR better than air travel, these days. Have you seen any recent news with regard to airlines, air rage, strikes, layoffs, etc?
Your twilight footage pulling into Columbus is like a dream sequence. Incredibly beautiful. Thanks as always.
Watched the whole thing. Planning to maybe take this on August. Your experience inside the roommette is invaluable and I appreciate your efforts in putting this monster of a video up!!

Thank you for taking us on the ride!
spent all sunday afternoon watching this, fantastic, great commentary, thankyou..
You really know how to travel!
Doing the thing right!! I agree, bring a few just in case items.
I like these videos because he brings the maps. And the narration. Just wonderful
Your video was so enjoyable! Your voice is so relaxing and pleasant. Thank you so much. It was wonderful to see a part of the country I have not experienced.
I am only 20 minutes into this but I'm enjoying so much, thanks for doing this!
Thank you.
Did an epic AMTRAK trip last April... Tuscon, Springfield IL, Joliet, Chicago, Seattle, Kelso. Your videos were immensely helpful in planning. Thanks!
Will be on this train #7 as far as Whitefish Mt Oct 1-6 2022 before heading home to Tenn via City of New Orleans. Probably lots of improvements since your trip I hope & expect. Thanks for all facts and local details you give.
I love watching your train trips. You are about the only one who will talk during the trip and say where your at.I like to watch trips when your in a sleeper..I wish more people would tell where there at!! I Stop watching if I don't know where the people are..Good job, I enjoy your trips every time..
I like the proportionality of this long video to the long train ride. Learned a lot in planning for my trip soon! Thank you:)
It's still there. same thing, only a casino joined it across the parking lot on the MT side. State Line Club
@@J-1410 Gotta return, check out its' Blackjack. Casino is inevitably owned by the local Indian tribe.
I actually have a lot of family that live in Williston and Dickinson, so I know that area pretty well. I live 40 minutes NW of Minneapolis, so whenever I go see family I usually take the Empire Builder from Minneapolis to Williston. It’s usually a pretty enjoyable trip.
@@joshmolinari4873 Cool, I lived at Watford City
Me too. It was a surprising adventure of a lifetime.
This trip is my favorite because Washington state is beautiful in the winter. Your narration makes me feel I’m there experiencing everything with you. I’ve watched 3 times and I’m sure I’ll watch many more. Thank you!
Now that was fun, thank you for a wonderful trip, especially the Cascades!!
Love these long trip documentaries.
@@intercityrailpal Wow, I can tell you aren't that smart are you.

The lack of heat similar to CN(Viarail) problems with the Turbo train..frozen toilets too! Enjoyed your video and commentary. Take care
"The Empire Builder" is the best name of any train route!!
Well, trains did build America, and allowed the shipping of good all over the country..a great train ride too

Thanks .
2:32:20 - Yellowbonnet!
Well, that was an epic journey. Thank you for bringing us along.
I grew up in Illinois, moved to Colorado the day after I graduated high school. THANK THE GOOD LORD I got the heck out of there! Living out west, the quality of life is so much better.
I go back to Illinois for weddings and funerals. So glad I left.
Great trip; thanks for taking me along! I didn't intend to watch more than a few minutes, but 2:45 later I'm glad I stayed on board.

If all ypu can do is be negative, put a sock in it. Write the U.S. Congress to allocate more money for Amtrak.
Your train video found us today! Thank you. You are very detailed. We absolutely loved it. Anxious to see the rest of the parts. We subscribed! HAPPY awesome 2020.

THIS HAS BEEN THE BEST VIDEO OF THE EMPIRE BUILDER TRAIN TRIP!!!!! WELL DONE, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Great video, Youtuuba (as always). Love the winter light and deep winter views. My pro tip: take a small can of WD-40 to silence pesky squeaks and duct tape for latches/doors that do not stay closed. Agree on the use of alcohol wipes.
Amen 👐🙏👐
You sound just like Wes Peppers, and thank you for letting us come along the ride with you
Great video!!
I enjoyed this more than some of the movies and tv's shows I've seen late. Very nice job. This is a trip I'd love to take some day.
For lots of people tomorrow never comes.. if you desire to do something you had better so it. you might not be here next week..
I’m a big fan of your travel videos, more like these please. Thank you.
In spite of the cold and resulting problems, I find this the most interesting of all this series. Out hoist is soothingly articulate and absorbing. And while I would never live there, I find open country interesting from a moving train. I have traveled twice on gthe Cal Zepher and the Cardinal.
Riding the entire builder from Portland to Chicago then switching to the capitol linited to Cleveland where we switch to a different capitol limited to Toledo then finishing our epic journey with a greyhound to Columbus Ohio. Videos like this make me even more excited
watched the whole thing just to see the train pass by my apartment building

I did the same thing.
Excellent trip and video.
Your voice and elocution . . . fabulous !
Dear Sir,
As before appreciate your candor along the journey.
Thank you for a delightful trip. It is bed time now in St Jacobs, Ontario Canada. 2:00 AM November 30, 2020. For you, have a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.
Bod/s Blessings to you.
I have done this trip many times since the 1960's. I love Amtrak and trains in general. It is one of the best ways to see America.....keep trains alive.
Love your videos, love your voice and all the train excitement that comes with train travel, love it !
I may have shared before, But your presentation, It reminds me of my DAD who past in 2016.Thank you
Great video and interesting narration! I would love to do this some day!
BTW, has anyone ever told you that your voice sounds a lot like Tim Conway's?
Very easy to listen to.
I love watching your train videos. My daughter and I hope to take an Amtrak vacation. Thank you for sharing yours.
This is about the 4th time watching it. Love it!
Still watching. Learned of the cold. You are a very nice and tolerant person.
Thank you for sharing your trip.
Thanks for this. As a former Seattle resident who has taken that train before, I enjoyed revisiting old memories.
The total time was a little over 44 hours.
thanks alot, at first I thought wow 2h45m, seems a lot. but it's absolutely not boring, and well commented, so much better than some other videos where this journey is summarized in stressful 20-30 minutes. most i like the Wintercascade scenery.
Video quality is amazing. Nice work.
Adding all I can. Thank you.
I will be taking this trip the first week of October this year so i rewatched your video as a refresher.
Excellent.
Very nicely done vid. Thanks for taking me along. Highly enjoyed the trip.

It took a few hours but the entire train came up to normal temperature.
Thank you for taking the time to do this. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Would love to do a long Amtrak trip someday.
Thank you for uploading! I would like to ride this train.
I have it is interesting and beautiful.
really enjoyed this video, and loved your idea about taking a GPS and radio with you. it would be fun to listen in to the behind the scenes chat like that
I can't believe I did it! Watched the whole thing. The Empire Builder goes through my home town in Minnesota. Unfortunately, around 3 AM. Next trip please stay up and take some video's. :)
I’m curious where you live in Minnesota. I live in Elk River about 40 minutes NW of Minneapolis or 30 minutes from St. Cloud. Usually take Empire Builder out of St. Cloud, but ocassionaly will do the Union Depot in Minneapolis.
Thank you. Excellent work. The last time I traveled with AMTRAK I enjoyed the SW Chief from Chicago to LA with a long pause in Albuquerque to visit my factory then still in there. Later continued to LA, and then San Francisco then south to New Orleans, back to New York. Rockwell and Allen Bradley remain part of professional life. Again very good work.
