  • Bob Bazanza shares his story of alcoholism and recovery in Alcoholics Anonymous. He first drank as a teenager and became a daily drinker, gambler, and thief by the time he went to college. After several failed attempts, he finally got sober in 1967 with the help of two AA members who changed his life.
In early sobriety, Bob faced many challenges - financial, work, family, and emotional issues. He learned he was driven by deep-seated fears that prevented him from fully embracing change and growth. After a spiritual surrender, he was able to make progress, stopping gambling and getting his finances in order with his wife's help.
For a time, Bob experienced great material success, but he became arrogant and disconnected. When he lost $8 million in the 1980s, it was a painful but transformative experience. He realized that recovery is not about the absence of problems, but about developing the tools to deal with life's challenges.
Throughout his journey, Bob struggled with recurring issues like anger, money, and parenting. However, he found that as he deepened his spiritual connection and practiced the principles, these behaviors became less destructive. He emphasizes that recovery is an ongoing process of removing the barriers between ourselves and our true nature, not a state of perfection.
Bob is grateful for the relationships and personalities that have shaped his recovery, especially his sponsor and his wife of 39 years. He cautions against becoming overly focused on mastering the program intellectually, rather than allowing it to transform us experientially. The true mark of recovery, he says, is how we live our lives beyond the rooms of AA.
