    This style of car advertising should be bought back immediately... just add:
    Porn music, handbrake turns, shagging birds on passenger seat, jumps, crazy body roll, near misses, 180 power slides, wheel spins and 2 speed fresh air vents.. ha ha

    Fond memories of being 17 and thrashing the guts out of my Dad's 1978 Escort 1.3L whenever he let me borrow it. Now the boot is on the other foot and I'm giving my own son the big ear about driving sensibly and looking after my motor.

    Watching the last part of this ad from 5:27 brought tears to my eyes for reasons unknown.
    Back in the day, 1992, I remember driving this car, a beige mk 2, 2.0 liter Escort Brenda which I borrowed from my late uncle an ex rally racer with a port polished engine and Webber carb to victory in a friendly drag race against a bmw 318i coincidentally driven by one of my rival suitors to the girl we were courting! Unfortunately, he eventually ended up with the girl which I suspected was due to his wealthy parents. But the fact prevails that I kicked his ass in that race!
    (Teary eyed as I’m writing now!)

      It's crash testing. All those stylishly thin roof pillars, flat noses, thin doors and flat surfaces means terrible EuroNCap scores. The roof pillars on the current Focus are designed so a joyrider can clip the curb, fly off the top of a motorway underpass, land on the roof and still run away unscratched. The doors can take side-impacts from lorries. The crumple zones can absorb the impact of a crash far more easily, and if you plough into a pedestrian, that pedestrian can roll off the bonnet without breaking their neck.

    Ford has made some nice cars over the years, including the Escort MK2 Ghia and the MK3 Ghia. Both those cars were great, but the Escort MK4 and MK5 was the beginnings of F.O.R.D. Losing its way, especially when it closed down its huge manufacturing facility at Ford, Dagenham U.K. But a lot of manufacturers have had similar fates, with increased competition, stringent safety laws to abide by which can change the overall look of a car and the way it handles the road. But if Ford can recapture it’s heyday in some way, without designing, tacky retro looking cars, it might just be onto a winner. But electric cars are the future, but they just don’t sound the same as a combustion engine running, often, which gave each Ford unique exhaust sounds, when you started up your car.

    For the first 2 minutes thought I was watching an old porn movie!
    And who needs a Van when you can fit that much luggage in an old Escort at 2:38 Got a suspicion all that stuff didn't actually make it into the boot. His bird must have been high maintenance assuming it's her luggage, or was he using it as ballast to stop the rear end sliding out?
    Also when he was loading it with luggage the car had Rostyles, but pulling the plane *cough* it suddenly had Steels.

    The Mk2 was the shortest lived Escort with a production life of just over 5 1/2 years, which was largely due to it being little more than a revised Mk1. By comparison, the Mk1 was in production for nearly 7 years, the Mk3/4 for 10, the Mk5/6 for 12.

    • @RapidAssistant
      @RapidAssistant 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Galaxie Invader Ford internally doesn't recognise the Mk3 and "Mk4" as separate generations. They both have the same platform code ("Erika"). As does the Mk5/6.

    • @johndrake2729
      @johndrake2729 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Mk 2 looked modern enough to last a few more years, but it would have stood out like a sore thumb among its FWD rivals. Hence Erika.

    • @robertmarsh3588
      @robertmarsh3588 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johndrake2729 it still looked ok but it was very uneconomical on fuel and the interior was out of date compared to newer models like the Astra.
      A friend had a late model 1600 Ghia which was lovely but the MK3 looked a lot more modern and was nicer inside and generally faster with the OHC engines. I remember being so excited when it came out, there was one parked out near my home before the launch. I guess the owner worked for Ford. Probably only the MK1/2 gets recognised as a classic now though.

    Tosspot you have a very apt username, it's obvious you don't know what the heck your talking about when you slag off the mk2 escort and it's style. If you look at most of the 70's, 80's, 90's, and today's rallys and Motorsport there's still a lot of mk2 escorts that can still pull there weight and still win rallies yet, maybe if you were around when these cars were released and on our roads, you'd know where I'm coming from.

    • @garydunn3037
      @garydunn3037 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was 17 in 1975 and we used to sell these Escorts by the bucket load, but I
      just could not see the appeal of them. They had no kerb appeal, just square
      boxes with nasty plastic grilles and bumpers. I suppose they did gain their
      Popularity as a Rally car. Of that I can't dispute, I just hated the look of them.

    • @garydunn3037
      @garydunn3037 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm afraid to say that I am one of those people who hated the styling of the
      mk2 Escort. And my father used to sell them back in the 70's, and I used
      to valet them for him. They had the aerodynamics of a brick, just no shape
      at all. The previous mk1 Escort was far better looking. I can, however, see
      where you are coming from, they were, and still are, very successful on the Rally Scene, so that's why they became so popular. The base model was
      even called the Escort Popular, so they did have some appeal I suppose.

    • @garydunn3037
      @garydunn3037 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Even though I dislike the mk2 Escort, to say that it was just a face
      lifted mk1 is not quite true. The two cars had entirely different body shells.
      Personally I preferred the look of the mk1 with its more rounded styling. The
      mk2 was a much squarer boxier shape, which I disliked. Ford did the same
      thing with the Cortina, the mk3 was curvy and quite a good looking car. Then
      in 1976 Ford released the mk4 and, just like the mk2 Escort, they took away
      all the curves, and ended up with a squarer shaped car which I also didn't like.
      But then, that's just my opinion, plenty of people bought them, both the Escort
      and Cortina. My late father made a living out of selling such cars in the 1970's.

    Thanks for telling me about this Wodge! Takes me back to 80's when I was a nut!
    By the way, that colour is not Signal Orange, it is Signal Red - that horrible milky, pinky gay colour that belongs on a nissan micra!

    I wish they made a 'proper' Mk2 wagon as well instead of using Mk1 shell with hybrid Mk1/Mk2 front panels

    Much the same as the Mk1 underneath but still a decent looking and handling car. The 1.1 and single carb 1.3 weren't fast though, even by 70s standards.

      I honestly don't think this was played on TV, but rather at showrooms next to the cars.
