    According to a famous traveler of that time from Japan, Keisuke-san, the dispute started when countess arranged flowers and broke a stem of a rose. Saying that roses are weak, she asked for another flower arrangement. To this, princess replied that when the seed of a rose hatches, it can actually break rock. The very rock that twig like fingers of countess can't even scratch. It is undisputable that roses are strong, while countess is weak. Countess talked back by calling princess a streetwalker out of her prime, waning like an old rose. The reply was - you will taste defeat. And the answer - anywhere, anytime. The events and a pugilistic duel at a carriage-parking lot behind the opera were thoroughly depicted in a set of masterfull woodcuts that inspired countless artists of following days as a brilliant demonstration of strength through art.

    There was a duelist who stripped completely naked to avoid clothing being pushed into a wound. (He knew about clothing infecting wounds.) This act so unnerved his opponent that the other conceded victory without a shot being fired.

      Not really that different today. Just look at the number of people who totally lose it when the see another driver do something wrong, like cutting them off. Maybe even if you just did something they didn't like.
      I was a pedestrian once waiting for the light to change when I saw a guy who looked like he was going to go before the light turned green. I said, "No turn on red." pointing at the sign.
      The guy flipped me off with his hand out the window, said "Fuck you asshole" to make sure I understood then turned on the red light.
      The guy behind him said to me, "Hey you tried." before he went to pull the guy over.
      Another time I was riding behind a cop going just a bit over the speed limit. I saw this guy coming up the fast lane going much much faster than I was going. I made a "slow down" gesture and as he passed me going maybe 120 he flipped me off.
      He was still flipping me off when he passed the cop.
      I would have loved to see that conversation. "Officer, for real, I was not flipping you off. I was flipping off the guy behind you. At the time I thought he was trying to tell me what to do. I see now he was trying to warn me that you were ahead of him."
      Somehow, I don't think that would make it better.

There is actually a scene in "Master and Commander" where the cloth WAS removed from a bullet wound, and everyone was happy because it matched the hole in the Sailors clothing. Yes, a fictional movie, but the scene still makes the point.

      And in C.S. Forester's novel "Hornblower and the Atropos" a duel is fought with guns and the loser nearly dies because of the suppurating effect of the clothing lodged with the ball in his body. A risky operation removes it successfully, there being no other choice if the man is to live. Forester's research was thorough so this sounds fully logical.

    Watching this video, two things came to mind: 1. The duel between Hamilton and Burr always makes me think of the "Got Milk?" commercial where a man, obsessed with the famous duel, is called on the phone by a radio-station having a contest. The radio-station asks the question, "Who shot Alexander Hamilton in a duel?" to which the obsessed man cannot answer as his mouth is full of cake and he has nothing to wash it down with thereby losing the contest. 2. Liechtenstein is where Heath Ledger's character "Ulrich" claims to be from (Ulrich Von Liechtenstein, his falsified name/title) in the movie "A Knight's Tale." Perhaps the infamous duel inspired the screenwriters for Ulrich's name seeing that he (Ulrich) was supposed to be a constant participant in jousts, which of course is a duel on horseback with very long sticks. lol.

    The real reason duels fell out of favour was high standing gentlemen died for trivial reasons. One famous duel in the United Kingdom, that turned public opinion away from the Duel was a pistol duel over their owners pet dogs getting into a fight. It ended with one man dead and another badly wounded.For no other reason than which dog was at fault for starting the fight.

    There were duels well into the 20th century. Georges Santelli was an Italian and Hungarian champion fencer in 1920 and an experienced duelist. Aldo Nadi a later Italian World Champion had a duel with an Italian sports reporter in the 1930s. I know of one that occurred in California in 1978 in the town of Sonoma, in Sonoma County. Schlager dueling was a 19th German dueling system that had university league participation. You could only be involved if you were a top student. This was aimed at proving one's courage. The head was target with eyes and nose protected. The typical result was a scar on the cheek which as a mark of aristocracy among men. It lasted up until WW2. But it was still in practice the last I knew of in the 1980s (only in secret). I was a competitive fencer for many years and was nationally rated. I once came very close to fighting a real duel with an A-hole who thought he knew what he was doing at a Renaissance Faire. I embarrassed him adequately with dull weapons without having to take up his challenge.

    04:23 shows a specific kind of duel, a duel between two members of a German university fraternity - a "schlagende Burschenschaft". I really don't know if they are still doing it, but I remember a teacher in high school who had a dueling scar on his cheek - a "Schmiss" - that in his days was shown off with pride.
    I can recall at least three movies that showed this kind of duel. One was the Poirot episode called ""The Secret of the Spanish Chest", to name just one off the top of my head.

      @thiloreichelt4199 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that does still occur in Germany, although members of fraternities adhering to that custom are a small minority among students. But that custom is NOT a duel, though it has evolved from duel. Think of it as kind of test of courage or initiation rite.

    I imagine the weapons used in the late 19c would have been épées, not rapiers. These are very similar to the modern fencing weapon which itself is simply a blunted dueling sword. Besides diminishing the chance for an infection, duelists went shirtless to show they they wore no defensive protection and so that any wounds would be immediately visible. These wounds could be a condition for ending the fight.

    I’m sorry to be picky to your wonderful videos, but the rapier sword WAS sharp on both sides of the blade. Yes it was pointy, but its sharpness aided in its penetration of the victim. Hopeless in combat, particularly piercing armour, it was used as a slashing weapon and in duels.

    Europe was really strange back then. Being born in the US, I couldn't relate to dueling period. I'm a boomer, I was taught life is precious, "Thou Shall Not Kill" was drilled into me from birth. Although later on exceptions would be made for times of war (Vietnam, Cuban Missile Crisis). But a good fight like boxing (not leading to death or permeate damage) was cool. Mohamed Ali, Mike Tyson were the Gladiators of my time. I give them both much respect.

    Fun fact- Here in Kentucky a part of our state constitution specifies that EVERY statewide elected officeholder MUST swear an oath upon being inaugurated that they have NEVER participated in or challenged someone to a duel. Just a couple of years ago a candidate was being interviewed on a radio show, cracked a joke saying he challenges (opponent) to a duel for something that (opponent) said that he didn't like. Guess what? Opponent GOES TO COURT, tries to get the candidate DISQUALIFIED! Don't remember the outcome, I think it just sorta "went away".

  • @matthewmcdaid7962
    @matthewmcdaid7962 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm in favor of reinstating the custom of dueling. When there is a substantial disagreement between countries, the heads of state should be compelled to face one another in a duel. It would save the lives of countless thousands if not millions of soldiers on either side. The financial burden of such disagreements being only the provision of weapons and venue for two persons rather than the complex array of technological weaponry typical of today's wars would greatly enrich the general populations of the countries involved. Can you imagine how wealthy Americans, for example, would be if the annual expenditure of billions for arms, military personnel, equipment, etc. dropped to a mere pittance?

  • @akosbarati2239
    @akosbarati2239 ปีที่แล้ว

    In summation, I'm seeing quite a few comments who earnestly wish there still was dueling. It depends on what kind of dueling you wish to bring back. While this particular duel due to higher social status may have leaned toward the Western style of duel, the further you go East, the less this became true.
    Pushkin agreed to his last duel, well-knowingly that he will face certain death. Duels in Russia or even in the Hungarian part of the Austrian Empire were fought to the death, and brutally so. So from my perspective, it's an excellent thing there are no duels anymore. Hungary had its own Laurel and Hardy in the cabaret world, but the two men hated each other in real life to the point they settled on a duel. Their actions prompted regent Horthy to ask the rubber stamp parliament to officially outlaw dueling in 1931.
