A real masterpiece. Larry Carlton’s electric guitar fills and outro take this song to the next level-from merely brilliant to spectacularly brilliant.
Joni Mitchell was a significate figure in the folk-rock movement. She is often cited as one of the most influential musicians in Rock history. Her unique blend of folk, jazz and pop made her one of the most distinctive voices of her generation. Mitchell also exemplifies the way rock absorbs other practices, the 60's folk scene out of which, she emerged being almost completely absorbed by rock by the 1970's. She would also go on to write some of the decades most anthemic folk music. She even composed songs for Gordon Lightfoot (an artist I believe you've reacted to before) and Judy Collins another powerhouse female artist. Here's a live performance of Judy Collins singing one of her big hits "Someday Soon" with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash. Judy and Stephen were together at one point. In this video she will talk about that some during her introduction. "Judy Collins, Stephen Stills & Graham Nash - Someday Soon (Live)" Great reaction
I don’t think she was judging anyone- she’s saying WE love our lovin’ but not like we love our freedom.
She is the very best of the very best.
Joni ❤️🎶🤩
I think you hit that one pretty much right on the head . . . in another song of hers (I think A Case of You) she talks about how she's afraid of the devil but is drawn to those who ain't afraid. . . so, yeah! Bad boy vibes, for sure. lol
You are absolutely right. We love a bad boy! but not forever. Nice review. I like that you review the reviews from the past.
She does a duet with Peter Gabriel on her song "My Secret Place".
Joni's music definitely includes jazz. She has so many great, insightful lyrics that state truth. It is poetry to music. Rich and Wonderful. More please.
This song is from her Court and Spark album. It is a masterpiece. Every song is great. I would suggest “A Free Man in Paris, Court and Spark and Down to You.
Tom Scott & The LA Express backed up Joni on this album among other great musicians
And Joni does a beautiful song on Tom Scott's album, called "Love Poem"..
The 70's had a lot of great music, but for us who grew up with it was one great song in a sea of great songs , seems like every week another great song would come out, I was 15 in 1970 so i listened to the best of 60's and 70's , great time to be alive.
Your comments about the lyrics are spot on! I was one of those women who picked the wrong man, and boy did I end up paying for it. I should have listened to Joni! lol
"Amelia" from Joni Mitchell's Shadows and Lights tour is spectacular, especially with the guitar solo at the end.
Joni is pure brilliance.
Joni Mitchell is one of the greats. A folk hero but also a jazz artist and rated as one of the greatest female guitarists ever. My favorite Joni song is Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire about James Taylor's heroin addiction. Free Man in Paris, from this same album, about record producer David Geffen is awesome as well. You can't go wrong with any Joni song. More please.
Love Joni!!! ❤ Woot! Memories of my youth!!!
This song was way before its time. This woman is a genius
One of my favorites on this great album. Hope you listen to the rest.
Great reaction!!! I'd love for you to react to Raised on Robbery, Big Yellow Taxi and You Turn Me On I'm a Radio.
A lot of her earlier work is about relationships and accepting the personal and emotional cost. After she got married, her later work has a lot of focus on the better side of love.
Apparently, most guys think about Rome nearly every day. I'm something of a classicist, so I guess I do to. But I think about Joni like every other minute
I think this is one of my favorite albums..."Court and Spark." The whole album is good.
Real players on real instruments, not a speck of autotune in sight (by about 20 years) - am I old school? You betcha! BTW I'm a guitar player, up to around the mid 70's it was Clapton, Hendrix, Santana - lotsa dirt & grit. This was one of those tunes (thanks, Larry!) that got me thinking "what if I cleaned up the sound?" This tune was a masterclass on chord leading and melody.
Court and Spark is a great album😊
SO JONI REALLY WENT MORE JAZZ BASED SOUNDING ON HER 75 ALBUM ( HISSING OF SUMMER LAWMS ) SHAWN 😊 BIG HITS BEING : IN FRANCE THEY KISS ON MAIN STREET & EDITH AND THE KINGPIN 👍
Joni Mitchell is a true icon, a truly unique person with incredible vocal range, and just a good soul.....peace
My favourite Joni song is Both Sides Now.

Iron butterfly....In a Gadda da Vida. You can't miss out on this MONSTER classic. Peace ✌️
I love Joni's songs, her voice and her unique songwriting. Joni was always failing at love mostly because she just couldn't settle down no matter how much she cared for the man. She was always searching but never being able to stay in a relationship for the long run. She writes so often about this and here again is someone who she is falling for who is not relationship material but she is admitting that she too loves her loving but she also loves her freedom. Joni is also a very talented artist. Most if not all of her album covers feature some of her art, often self portraits. Sometimes we grow up and become a different person and sometimes we grow up and understand we are comfortable with who we are and find no need to change. As long as we are happy, honest about our intentions and never intentionally hurt anyone, I think whatever personal choice we believe is best for ourselves is the right one to pursue. If you haven't already reacted to it, her song Blue is beautiful and when you understand that Blue in the song is her emotion of being sad, it really hits deeply.
PURE MUSICALITY
Interesting you picked Help Me as your introduction to Joni Mitchell's work. You actually nailed it on the head. Her album Court and Spark marked a departure from Joni's previous musical efforts where she began incorporating more jazz influences to her standard folk styling. Her first four albums were strictly acoustic guitar and piano compositions. The album before C&S, For The Roses, Joni began using electric backup in the form of Tom Scott and the LA Express which became her touring band in '74-'75. The reason Joni only had 1 top ten hit is because her music and songwriting was too mature in its emotional content for the masses. Notable (folk pop) songs she's famous for: Woodstock, Both Sides Now, Big Yellow Taxi, and Chelsea Morning.
I have a preference for her first few albums, and songs like Song to a Seagull, Songs to aging children come, Michael from Mountains. River is a little later, but so soulful.
Her only top 10, but her work is genius brilliant music - too deep for top of the pops.
Please listen to “A Case of You”. Classic and beautiful Joni.
The song is about David Geffen.
Love seeing someone in a Metallica shirt digging into some Joni.
Now you need to hear the other side of the story and listen to Bob Seger “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man.
😊
Is this about Graham Nash? Our House was about the place they shared.
YOU WANT SOME GOOD JONI SONGS SHAWN? 😊ALBUM ORDER : CACTUS TREE, THE DAWNTREADER, THAT SONG ABOUT THE MIDWAY, I THINK I UNDERSTAND, FOR FREE, CONVERSATION, SO THERE'S JUST ( 6 ) DEEPER TRACKS💯 FROM HER FIRST 3 ALBUMS ( 68-70 ) SOME ALBUM HITS : CHELSEA MORNING, BOTH SIDES NOW, WOODSTOCK, COYOTE 👍THERE YA GO SHAWN, THER'S JUST ( 10 ) TO STEW OVER! HEY ENJOY YOUR FATHER'S DAY SHAWN, GODSPEED!
Your first mistake is listening to anything that Rolling Stone magazine says.
These fools didn't even put Terry Kath(Chicago)in their top 100 greatest guitarists of all time.
Court and Spark was her last good album imo. Blue is her magnum opus
I’m sure thousands of people will disagree with your opinion of this album
@@richardhornbostel3958I said it was good. So you're saying Court and Spark wasn't?
Joni was so much older then, she's younger than that now.
@@plantfeeder6677 I disagree that it was her last good album. It might have been her most successful sales wise, but I prefer Hissing of Summer Lawns
Most awesome song ever written (well, maybe some hyperbole). Jazz, and everything guitarist, Larry Carlton played on it. This is a pinnacle for Joni in my most humble opinion. Song still gives me chills.
I love it too. ❤
