  • In celebration of Parasite's Oscar nominations and record-breaking run at Film at Lincoln Center, we're sharing the full Q&A from the film's NY premiere at the 57th New York Film Festival, featuring Bong Joon Ho, Song Kang Ho, Park So Dam, and Choi Woo Shik. See showtimes & get tickets, including the new www.filmlinc.o...
    In Bong Joon Ho’s exhilarating new film, a threadbare family of four struggling to make ends meet gradually hatches a scheme to work for, and as a result infiltrate, the wealthy household of an entrepreneur, his seemingly frivolous wife, and their troubled kids. How they go about doing this-and how their best-laid plans spiral out to destruction and madness-constitutes one of the wildest, scariest, and most unexpectedly affecting movies in years, a portrayal of contemporary class resentment that deservedly won the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or. As with all of this South Korean filmmaker’s best works, Parasite is both rollicking and ruminative in its depiction of the extremes to which human beings push themselves in a world of unending, unbridgeable economic inequality. A NEON release.
    Film at Lincoln Center is dedicated to supporting the art and elevating the craft of cinema and enriching film culture.
    Film at Lincoln Center fulfills its mission through the programming of festivals, series, retrospectives, and new releases; the publication of Film Comment; the presentation of podcasts, talks, and special events; the creation and implementation of Artist Initiatives; and our Film in Education curriculum and screenings. Since its founding in 1969, this nonprofit organization has brought the celebration of American and international film to the world-renowned arts complex Lincoln Center, making the discussion and appreciation of cinema accessible to a broad audience, and ensuring that it remains an essential art form for years to come.

    8:55 the interpreter for the actress Park interpreted her answer on his own way which is not allowed for the interpreters. They have to be as close to the original context as possible rather than recreating the answer with his/her own judgement. Park never said in her Korean answer such as "be the best I can be with his expectations"

      That particular translator always infused his ideas/notions into the "translations". He is terrible. That is why Sharon Choi is the best. She interprets the exact message down to the nitty gritty details. That is the differentiation between a great interpreter and a poser. The amazing thing is Sharon isnt even trained in the interpretation art. She is actually a junior director to Director Bong.

    Coffee is a stimulant. And what a stimulating film this has been, only film where I screamed in a movie theatre full of people while others reacted with silent horror (I presume). Never have I lost my composure that way in the 2+ decades been watching films in a public place. And yes, as a sort of therapy people should discuss what they thought of the film in social media, sort of recovery if ever some were that shocked the way the film panned out. (Took me a month to process what I have seen before I started talking about this film, actually.) ♡

Reminds me of the awkward conversations I’ve heard and read around Hustlers and I think I know why: it’s what Ramona says in Hustlers: ‘ the whole country ( the USA) is a strip club, some are throwing the money, the rest are shaking that ass.’ Apparently parasitism is a global phenomenon! Can’t wait to see this one.

    *@**13:45**: What is the Korean word for "family" which come from two Chinese characters meaning "to eat together"?*
    In *Vietnamese* , you have the term *"gia đình"* (derived *from the Chinese characters : 家庭* , meaning "house" and "yard")
    *I would've figured the Korean word was the same.*

      @@kelliemoon2796 Wow, thanks for the info! I don't speak Korean, but based on my guess as to what that might sound like, it could be from "食" (alimentation) and "口" (mouth). If that were a Vietnamese word, it would be "thức khẩu; but we don't have that term at all.

      That’s what I wondered, too! Someone could step it up a bit and ask “What questions do _you_ wish the audience was asking you?”
      Actually, it turns out that Bong Joon-ho himself asked the most interesting question: what did the actors think when they first read the script? (What would be interesting is if the actors asked questions of the others that they themselves might be curious about. Those might be more interesting than the now-standard “Who are the parasites?”-type question that they’ve been asked dozens of times.)

  • @closed582
    @closed582 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    As a Korean, I believe the movie showed very unique Korean cultures that make the universal inequality issue to be more intensified. One example would be the enormous amount of money Koreans have to spend for private education. I think the new book, “South Korea: The price of efficiency and success” is great to learn the unique Korean cultures.
