    My Barnes and Noble has been like this for a long time now. They barely have any movies, as the section is only about 6 feet total. They also keep the Arrow and Criterion behind the counter, but it's only a handful of titles, and it sounds like those will be gone too. While I do think theft is a problem, I don't believe that is the only reason they are doing this. I read somewhere that they wanted to focus more on books, so their movies, collectible toys and such have been really cut back. I love finding stuff in the wild, but damn, it's becoming harder and harder to do so.

      finding stuff in the wild is so awesome... I found the Arrow 4k Conan sets at my B&N a couple months ago when they were going for $100 on ebay and it was so fun! now, nothing like that will happen there again and if there are only a few select stores carrying them, those stores will never keep anything in stock because of the demand

    Loss and theft are always convenient excuses for poor management and refusing to fully staff stores to increase profit management...I've noticed this in so many stores, not just Wal-Mart and Barnes & Noble...in some cases (like Wal-Mart) they are still ratcheting up record profits, and Barnes & Noble has rebounded from years of disappointing numbers...I'm telling you, this probably has more to do with profit margins...Barnes & Noble probably thinks it can make more money selling cheap puzzles and anime crap than boutique blu-rays with a high price tag that only fly out of the stores when Criterion and Arrow have their sales

    • @mynock250

      @@mynock250 maybe...I have no doubt that loss plays a factor in all of that, but these stores, specifically B & N, are very understaffed-almost never staff the media section...what's the reason? profit...when giant corporations bitch and moan about theft, the real answer is always profit...they don't want to spend their massive profits on properly staffing stores...so they blame theft, the breakdown of capitalist society (which they created btw) etc...always happens...besides, think about it, what's the resale value on a new Criterion blu-ray? $20-$25...and that's gone down cause the average person doesn't have the extra money to spend on a purely boutique item...In fact, I have started selling off some of my own Criterions, and replaced them w/ regular DVDs or Blu-Rays, cause I couldn't justify keeping them...always take anything that a corporation says with a grain of salt.

    • @harryk316
      @harryk316 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Theomite It's not theft...it's all about profit and the bottom line...if they are worried about theft, then hire more employees...this is the case everywhere from Wal-mart to Michaels to B & N...start staffing your media section...most of the time it's completely abandoned...they don't care, cause the average Criterion Blu-Ray has a very small resale value--even if its stolen...20-25 bucks, that's peanuts...they probably are going to start selling more profitable items instead w/o regard for loss.

    Thieves will be thieves. Economy has nothing to do with for the specific Criterion and Arrow releases. They are targeted because of the high resale value on the used market. Same way Apple products are targeted more than Android products. I remember back in the day when Toyota Camrys and Honda Civics were huge targets. There used part value was high. The only indicator of economy is there is a market out there willing to pay above average prices for Criterion and Arrow video releases.
    I haven't been to my Barnes and Noble recently but is the only one in the largest metro of the state and movie section is already in a walled off area in the back corner with a security detectors at the entrance and it's own check out register. Lol just such a fascinating thing. Feels like security at my BN is off the charts sometimes with the spider wraps and plastic cases they put things in. You used a specific word when going into detail about the BN situation - you said chargebacks , are people placing orders then just cancelling the transaction or something - is that possible? But that also led me to the thought of returns. Is it possible people order online during sales and then do returns/exchanges in store when they received damaged items - that will then sit on a shelf for ages since collectors typically want a non damaged package - could that be hurting their profit margins? This seems almost more likely than the stealing thing to me with the way collectors are.

The only other change I've seen in the physical media section is the increase in shelves of vinyl LPs and fewer CDs. We've never had any Kino releases here. I haven't heard of any planned changes regarding Criterions, but I'll ask the next time I go in. One thing you said when you were walking around your B&N caught my attention. You picked up The Exorcist, which cost $40.00, and remarked that you could get it on Amazon for $13.00. The growth of Amazon is a huge factor in the demise of brick & mortar retail stores. They can't compete. Yes, retail theft is a big problem, but Amazon is being allowed to take over the entire retail landscape. They will eventually be the only place you can buy anything, a development I find both sad and boring.

    Sucks to be them but Amazon and eBay sell Criterion and Arrow at every day lower prices not just twice a year. I just bought Lynch’s Lost Highway on 4K Criterion for $28 where my local B&N charges $40. And I’m not going to force myself to have some lowly paid worker physically stand behind me watching me decide if I want to buy something or not. They can shove that idea right up their English Channel.

    I don't see how Barnes& Noble is in business anymore. I used to go there decades ago and buy magazines and now I think magazines are 15 or $16 a piece. And their stuff is so overpriced. I just take pictures of everything I like and go by it somewhere else. It is sad to see but last time I went to my local one I live in an area basically where there's five or six and they all pretty much got rid of a lot of the same stuff and made records more popular (because it seems everything old is new again). Maybe they'll start getting VHS tapes back. Haha.

    I have also lamented the loss of places that sell physical media. There used to be a great store called Fry’s in my area years ago that closed that had a wonderful selection. After that I had to turn to Best Buy and we all know what happened there. My Barnes and Noble has almost nothing and my Walmart usually has mostly DVD and a few Blu Rays but nothing special. These days, if you want to stay up to date, you have to do constant research, enable notification spam, and be proficient in python scripting so you can query vendor API’s to keep up with stock updates. Especially for stuff like Conan or the rumored release of The Keep.

Walmart takes out their steelbooks in their special rack and puts in those Halloween themed video's. That's lame. I did hit my local Walmart the other day and checked out movies and lo and behold, there was a 4K steelbook of Kevin Costner's Horizon. Grabbed that bad boy quick. Interesting perspective. As someone who worked at a B&N years ago, and in the music/movies department, the problem was self-inflicted by the company. Ex - The movie "The Martian". We had the dvd version. We had the B&N dvd version (same movie, just different SKU, possibly different slipcover). We had the Blu-ray version. We had the B&N Blu-ray version. Then there was the director's cut. Rinse, repeat. Too many SKU's for the same movie, all overpriced because the inventory was not selling enough copies so B&N could lower the prices (either that, or they had poor negotiating skills with their distributors). So, which copies sold the most? The cheapest ones, which usually meant one of the dvd versions, leaving everything else to collect dust on the shelves. I should also add that the district manager for the company had his office in our store, and even back then, the company had a very low opinion about physical media, be it CD's or movies. As soon as various sites started mentioning the "upcoming" UHD 4K format, I let the district manager know, and his response was nonplussed. And when the UHD's came out, our store didn't carry any of them.
