  • Adam spends the day in master swordsmith Peter Lyon’s shop, making a steel dagger that will be the hero prop for the film. While Adam gets to grinding the blade, we also visit Weta’s props department to cast a few different rubber stunt daggers for the action sequence. Adam then heads to the paint shop to get the hero and stunt props painted to match!

58:49 - Denatured alcohol is a generic term for alcohol (typically ethanol) that has had something added to make it taste bad (but might still be technically safe for human consumption). Methylated spirits specifically refers to the addition of methanol, consumption of which can make you go blind or even die.

59:10 I first heard that wagon repair story in the Belgariad series of books by David Eddings. It's always stuck with me :D
"But that piece goes underneath," Garion said. "No one will ever see it."
"But I know it's there," Durnik said, still smoothing the metal. "If it isn't done as well as I can do it, I'll be ashamed every time I see this wagon go by--and I'll see the wagon every day."

I worked in the Perth Mint making blank gold coins. We would start with a 25kg ingot, run it through different size presses to flatten the bars out. The bars would get warm but not as warm as 22k gold (and below), gold and silver would give you 3rd degree burns direct to skin, man, dirty and hot. 9999 gold was the best.

Trust me filing is only fast when you're using power tools to do most of the heavy removal. I forge knives and don't have electric grinders, saws, or Sanders. I do all the cutting and filing by hand and it always takes longer then I think it's going to. It does move fast on things like copper, bronze, and aluminium though. That's why I like working with copper, it's like molding clay. I could use power tools but I really like making things by hand. Or maybe I just like to punish myself. I can't really tell anymore.

I want to live at Weta just learning from Peter and the team. It's a joy to watch Adam and Peter just patiently going over tricks and techniques.
also 42:34 I think the centre punch could be a Neiko Automatic?

Jeus, how hot was it that week!? First five minutes with each new person, "well it's really hot today so it'll..."
All jokiing aside, it's interesting to hear how much just the ambient temperature affects each craft. And how aware everyone is about how it's going to change the way they work.

Man theze guys at weta are awesome. Would love to do that for a living. As it stands i work in manufacturing but its all silicone quartz so lasers do all the work. Never get to get my hands dirty actually making something at work.

They are working on 4000 swords? Then they must be working on Amazon's LOTR series. Whoops cats out of the bag on that one. Btw you can visit this workshop on the WETA tour.

@@lal12 What other project would require 4000 swords? Plus they would need to get them done in advance.

@@purefoldnz3070 didn't really know it either. But mid 2018 seemed a little bit early, in my memory the planning for lotr wasn't complete at that point, might be wrong though.

ok, I wasn't thinking a dagger would be appropriate for a particular thought experiment, however that actually looks really nice, and isn't that heavy or bulky from the looks of it.
Great vid Adam and crew. B)
