  • I filmed this during my visit to Kyoto Budo center on the 5th of November. Sensei Inoue, holds one of the few 9th Dans for Kendo. At the time of filming I believe he is 87 years of age, and is leading the training of other high-level practitioners.

    Love the death-kirikaeshi with half a dozen extra strikes thrown in, and I think he still does it all in one breath.

    Heian Shrine was built in 1895 and 4 years later in 1899 Butokuden was completed next to it, for your info.

    Kendo basically if you want to see the practical side is about killing the opponent, but is not focused on that like everybody said before. And the eye and body speed you will gain from practicing it will be useful in a real fight

    Kendo is not supposed to be played inside a ring. It has its own rules. As for kendo being used in a 'skirmish situation', I think fighting is not the aim here in kendo. In budo, the most important thing is mind, body, and spirit training. Indeed it will be useless if you can't fight a real fight. But it is just not the main aim. And kendo is not always impractical.

  • @M1trafan
    @M1trafan  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Kendo, for me has an infinite beauty in how impractical it is, much in the same way as chess. It taxes your body and your mind in a fight to perfect yourself and best your opponent within the strict lattice of rules. I find this exhilarating, but it may not be for everybody.
    @Dimitri0809 If you are looking for Japanese sword-fighting - look up Kenjutsu (umbrella term for a large amount of schools). It will convert much easier onto padded weapons and has more practical applications.

    His skills and talents are beyond reality level and it seems like not many people are seeing that from this video.
    And..Yes! Kendo can be used in real fights but it wouldn't be smart to do that because the opponent might die or injure seriously.
    That's why you don't really see this sport being used in street fights..

    • @M1trafan
      @M1trafan  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Smith Kendo, aka the way of the sword exists in a strange space between martial art and school level sport. It's application in real combat is very diverse, however I believe that any tansferable skills from the sport have a potential to be useful in a confrontation.

      I suppose it might sound funny to the uninitiated. It's a battle-cry called a Kiai, used to both disrupt your opponent's ki in order to create an opening for a perfect strike and to invigorate your spirit through the attack.

    kendo , the art of how not to fight with a sword .

    • @M1trafan
      @M1trafan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +sewagedweller There are many elements to fighting with a sword. If you are thinking of techniques for combat- there are much more efficient styles. However, as swords in general have little to no use in this context today, what kendo can aid you with much better than most other sports- is spirit of fighting. This is why personaly I think "Dojo" oriented practice > "Shiai" driven kendo Kendo

    • @simonedurante5501
      @simonedurante5501 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +sewagedweller another one that believe to know how is a real sword fight. so tell me wich is the way to fight with sword? i am sure you did a lot of sword fight in 2015. man kendo is the art of use a sward if you want see kids that hurt each others with sticks we are not talkig the same language.

    • @sewagedweller
      @sewagedweller 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Simone Durante you are pretty stupid , you know that , right ? im not saying this as an argument , im saying it because you are pulling stupid things out of your arse. Kendo is a sport where things like thrusting are illegal because of the safety concerns , they lack majority of techniques of a traditional sword styles because those techniques are useless in competition . They dont do proper cuts because those dont matter ,etc , etc. It doesnt matter what year it is , there is still sufficient information left about historic martial arts to know what is a good way to use sword , a good technique and what is going to get you killed.

    • @simonedurante5501
      @simonedurante5501 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      And you are more stupid that me, kendo isn't a sport, soccer is a sport, volleyball is a sport. Kendo is art, and i am sure that you can't defeat a 2 or 3 dan of kendo using all the thrust you want. In every competition there are rules as i said if you want see 2 kids hurt each others with stick stop watching this video. And only to know do you pratice kendo?

    • @sewagedweller
      @sewagedweller 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Simone Durante nope you are pretty fucking stupid . Its football , not soccer , you dimwit. Kendo is a sport , because its involves physical competition, under strict rules and guidelines of kendo federation. And that is not a bad thing . Yeah im sure i wont be able to beat kendo dans in kendo , but you know boxer cant beat wrestler in wrestling and wrestler is going to have hard time beating boxer in boxing. Hema for example makes bigger emphasis in their scoring when it comes to defense. Injuries are common in contact sports , even under best regulations , ive got hurt before in bjj or judo. I never said i want to see people to get hurt , again you are fucking idiot for pulling a strawman , i was talking about a realistic approach to a combative sports where bigger emphasis made on proper defense and attacks. I've train little bit in kenjujitsu , but its not my focus.
