Having a lot of problems understanding logic and im happy to can say this was extremely helpful . Just wanted to say thank you your help and look forward to looking at your other videos.
I just picked up an MPD32 and I'm brand new to producing any kind of music and logic pro 9 so here are a few questions I have. How would I be able to assign the sample parts I just chopped up in logic to each specific pad on my MPD32 controller? How do I sync up my controller to Logic pro 9? How do I assign effects to the knobs and faders? I know this is kind of a lot to ask for but your help would be GREATLY appreciated. Also great video! Very informative in a very interesting and simple manner
I think there's an easier way to put the chopped sample into the EXS24: Just select all the regions and ctrl-click (right click if you have a mouse), then go to "Create new sampler track" and select Create Zones From: Regions. That will create the instrument track with an EXS24 and automatically map the chopped sample to different keys. That way you don't have to manually create the track and drag the samples into the editor, and you also avoid that bug the newer versions of Logic have.
@imamusicmogul i found the solution to the DAW splitting directly to the bar and not cutting in-between. In Logic 9 there are 3 different 'Split' key commands: 1.Split Regions/Events by Locators or Marquee selection 2.Split Regions/Events by ROUNDED Playhead Position 3.Split Regions/Events by Playhead position You need to use the one which is NOT rounded. assign your key command to number 3 in that list and problem solved. thanks musicmogul for the tips though... they really help!!!!!
on some file, the tempo is printed "into" it, and some they are not.... Most audio files you get does not allow you the flexibility to control the tempo like Apple Loops... I will soon post a video on how to match sample to a tempo...
after you add it to esx sampler, bring out the exs plugin and click edit on the top right next to the options..and its gonna show you all the chops you have...on the top it will say..zone, audio file, pitch..etc..go to the playback one and uncheck "1shot" it should play to the length you hold down the key
@imamusicmogul i know what he was talking about cause its happening to me. when you cut to playhead, the DAW will automatically quantize up to the nearest bar, instead of chopping the sample in any place that you want, like you're doing, it goes forward and only chops at the bar. so if i hit the chop key 3 times between bar 4 and 5 for example. the DAW will only make one slice at bar 5
@ITAMAproduces aight bro got it, u go back to ur key command window. there are TWO exact same options called split regions events by playhead... i had hte first one set to / but i set the scnd one... instead... the lower one. now it works. chop up bboy , chop up! 1
Great tutorial. One question, once you've chopped the samples, assigned them to keys, and create a kit how do you get the samples to fit or sync with the tempo?
great tutorial! really helped me alot. This might be a dumb question, but im new to logic pro so bare with me. How do you pull up the virtual keyboard you were playing on at the end of the video?
Excellent video! But i have a question: How do you set up the rack? When i import the sample and then try to pull it up int he esx24 it gives me no option??
Another method which you might find a bit easier to do is... right click the piece of audio select convert > 'convert to new sampler track' select 'transient markers' and click ok This will save you quite a bit of time, as you don't have to cut the audio manually and the EXS24 organises the samples onto each key for you.
oh... You mean you hit a kit the whole sample plays... When you are in the editor window make sure you have a check mark beside the 1 shot... Let me know if that works!!
Thanks for the tutorial! But what if my sample isn't just an easy guitar loop and has a bunch of other sounds in it? How can I make it as clean as possible?
Thanks man! This is great. I´m new on logic so this have been really helpful! Big up from Sweden! I have one question: How do i play my samples at the same time? You know what i mean? Like 3 or more samples together, same time. I want to try some live mash-ups through Logic. Excuse my broken english. /Tim
Wow great video, especially the small command tutorial within the tutorial haha. I don't if this been asked, but instead of having it where you have to hold the key for the sample to play, is there a way to make it where it released all the way with one press of the keys? Thanks again.
Hey, great tutorial. I really needed that. One question, tho. When I press the keys on my keyboard to trigger the sample, it fades out like when ur playing a piano. I need continuous sound with one press, do u know any way to resolve this?
why when i click "ok" @ the "contiguous zones" part i get this message: "the file name is too long"? After that, i do everything as u say but i get no sound out of the logic's keyboard. Great tutorial!
great vid. I have a mpd 18 and I cannot get it to play the samples. they are mapped to the esx24 editor screen keyboard just fine but cannot play on the mpd. any help or suggestions would be great
Great video! But how do i load the setting into the exs 24 now? i dragged in 2 snare drums i sampled but i when i go to load they are saved as exs files and i cant load them? Thanks
Thanks for the video, but when I change the command just like you did it doesn't let me split while is playing? do you have to hold another key in other to split or just the one you chose on the command?
This is brilliant! Thanks allot man! Just one question though. When i hit record my sample just repeats over and over again like a default. I must have missed something here i know but its so frustrating! It only happens when i hit record and not when i just press my key. Hope someone can help! Thanks again.
And can you edit a specific sample rather than editing all the samples? Like, if i wanted to have a delay and reverb on a sample, but keep the rest as it is? Thanks!
Hey man i love your videos but i have a question that i havent been able to find anywhere.. i want to sample vocals from a song, i have the sampling down.. but is there a way to mute the music from the sample so that its ONLY vocals? im kind of a logic noob at the moment
Adam whats up man, Do you have a Video tutorial on looping a sample? I've been E-diggin and finding pieces on vinyl rips that I would like to just loop but cannot figure it out. Help if ya can :)
very nice tutorial, but i have 1 problem though, when I load up the samples and i looks exactly like 5:20, my keyboard doesn't play the sample !! what can i do?
you didn't really address the issue of pitch shift. does this method correct the pitch of a particular sample with regards to the note that you assign it to? or am i just playing with the samples in their original pitch?
Hello. A question, please. How is possible to write musica with notations scores by score button or else Not by midi nor files nor keyboards or key or extenal istrument...only with notes like a composition ...like finale, to have the traditional notation, not the apple only. And to apply it to a soft instrument .Thanks
I chopped up the sample the with the back slash key as I was playing the beat and i got it to mix down to the ESX Sampler but the only thing that bother me was that it played the entire sample instead of just playing the length of how long I hold down the key I pressed.I use an Oxgen25 keyboard. How can I edit the options so that the sample only play as long as I hold the key?
Is there a way to cut up the sample the same way in the sample editor window at the bottom while the sample is NOT playing? I want to be able to set the regions manually while looking at the wave in the sample editor..so i get the exact cuts i want visually instead of by ear with this process.
Thank you! haha and I've BEEN sampling in logic too, i've just been manually chopping and manually copying and pasting, aka the hardest way.... but shit glad I know this now..
How can you adjust the parameters (ASDR, resonance, etc.) to individual samples on separate keys? Right now, any adjustments i make effect all of the samples.
U can convert the split regions into separate audio files and then drag and drop them from Finder onto the keyboard screen. They're gonna end up separated, each on it's own key :)
do you know where does logic save the samples when you do that? Imagine this. If im recording a song and i record my own voice and then i do what u did on this video, then i save the EXS setup. then i get rid of that project deleting the files, but i want to use the sounds on mainstage for instance. or on another song... did logic made a copy of the sound in order to get them after? or it stays in the same folder? THANKS!!
What are pressing to drag the chop up track to ESX. I cannot figure out how to highlight the whole track and grab.It only grabs piece by peice. You said something about a audio something right?
Yes , you can upload your own audio into logic..and Yes , you can export the sample into other programs . If you have any more questions I can help..I'm a Music Producer in Cali I work with lots of people
for some reason when im playing the keys i don't hear any sound.... I dragged my samples in all correctly and did everything you said, but its not linking up to my keys... help?
If I want to do it the automatic chop way with the transient markers, how do I lower the quantity of the markers, without having to manually chop it, so that when i press a key, it plays more than like a .5 second clip of whatever got automatically chopped?
Is this better than just right clicking your samples and selecting "convert to new sampler track"? That's what i've been doing. It seems to do the same thing. I'm using Logic 9
hey i just have a question with this process can i upload my own audio into logic and then chop it up with this method ? or is it only for the audio i record threw logic ? and as a follow up can u export the chopped samples to other music programs like FL or Reason ?
hi no person seems to answer this question . is it posible to type notes in the piano roll and have the notes light up. fl studio 10 does can logic do it
Im having a problem setting my shortkey to split regions. I follow exactly how you explain, multiple times, and I just cant get the hotkey to chop the sample : ( Any ideas?
I got through all of the steps except bringing up the logic keyboard. I don't know how to bring it up, and right now when I hit A, S, D, etc, it doesn't play any sounds
i have question. If I sample a track at BMP of 138 and I want to use that sample on a hip hop track BMP 95 how do I match the sample to that tempo. I did everything you showed on video but when I slow down track the sample don't slow down. Help please...
Anybody know how to quantize the slice points I'm entering with the hot key? Changing start and end points on Logic is still faster than what I was doing with hardware, but quantizing my button mashing would be pretty helpful.
At 2:20 skip all that and just select all the regions on that track and then right click on it and select convert to sampler track, then make regions is selected and click continue
I am a beginner to Logic Pro I am very interested in this software because I see that it is powerful and ver user friendly. But the problem I am having is chopping up my samples.I want everybody to know that the US preset setting does allow you to use forward slash to chop samples. My problem now is I can drag the music into my logic pro but I can't hear it at all.I have never been able to hear nothing that I drag into logic.PLEASE HELP!

Good questions. I'm actually positing a video on that exact topic tomorrow. Make sure to check it out. For now. There is a pitch section roughly in the middle of EXS24 move the knob down or up and you will adjust the pitch of the entire sampler instrument.

Having a lot of problems understanding logic and im happy to can say this was extremely helpful . Just wanted to say thank you your help and look forward to looking at your other videos.
"Liked" this video 46 seconds into it. Good at explaining what it necessary for Logic not unnecessary crap or bragging. Kudos
no problem, your going to love Logic the more you use it and really how easy everything is!!
Thank you so much for making it so plan and easy to understand. I had almost given up on trying use the sample feature.
@Jewman4000 thank you!!! Glad I was able to help!!! Enjoy more video as they come...
@smoothcrimnal6 you can!! Did you have success adding any other wav files??

Most helpful video I watched so far! thanks

In Logic 9 there are 3 different 'Split' key commands:
1.Split Regions/Events by Locators or Marquee selection
2.Split Regions/Events by ROUNDED Playhead Position
3.Split Regions/Events by Playhead position
You need to use the one which is NOT rounded. assign your key command to number 3 in that list and problem solved.
thanks musicmogul for the tips though... they really help!!!!!
Oh, never mind....sorry I wasn't listening when you said how to do that part........was distracted until I watched it again.......thx bro!
on some file, the tempo is printed "into" it, and some they are not.... Most audio files you get does not allow you the flexibility to control the tempo like Apple Loops... I will soon post a video on how to match sample to a tempo...

Amazing :) Welcome to Logic!!
Good tutorial. Just switched from FL studio to Logic. Sampling vocals is so much faster, in my opinion.
what do you mean??? How are you going about cutting the sample?
hey flyguy206, I will make a video on it as soon as I get a chance...
Such a hilarious exchange between dao and hydro
great tutorial, but couldnt the same be acheived through use of automation?
I love you videos. Best around... thanks Adam!
Great tutorial. One question, once you've chopped the samples, assigned them to keys, and create a kit how do you get the samples to fit or sync with the tempo?

Another method which you might find a bit easier to do is...
right click the piece of audio

select 'transient markers' and click ok
This will save you quite a bit of time, as you don't have to cut the audio manually and the EXS24 organises the samples onto each key for you.
Alex Mobaraki I'm using Logic Pro 7 how do I chop up and quantise samples like one would on an MPC?
Sorry UK Gar, the oldest logic I've used is 9
@lanakid1 sorry!!! hoped you liked the video though and learned something!!!
oh... You mean you hit a kit the whole sample plays... When you are in the editor window make sure you have a check mark beside the 1 shot... Let me know if that works!!
How do you do this with Logic X?
Very helpful! Is there any way I could assign samples to pads instead of keys? It's not a problem, but I am curious.

Can you make a video, on how to set up a control surface in logic
Can you please explain how to set up mpd32 with logic and doing this step with a mpd32
fantastic tutorial!!! thank you so much
And can you edit a specific sample rather than editing all the samples? Like, if i wanted to have a delay and reverb on a sample, but keep the rest as it is? Thanks!

why the program always pause when i record
and how do i stop that ...by the way i am a first time logic user
How do you make your track regions larger so you can see the audio ave better?
If I sample only on one note is it possible to turn that into different pitches across the keyboard?
yes,
How do you record the sample after its chopped and saved? I know .. silly question...
Thanks

Good questions. I'm actually positing a video on that exact topic tomorrow. Make sure to check it out. For now. There is a pitch section roughly in the middle of EXS24 move the knob down or up and you will adjust the pitch of the entire sampler instrument.
