I had two of these - wrecked one (thanks Uber), and was mid-restore on the second when I lost my storage and had to get rid of it in a hurry. I miss my M1009... It would go anywhere I wanted it to, was easy to work on (if you understood the quirks), simple, no BS. Bunch of good people on Steel Soldiers to chat with. I think I'll get another (and maybe a M1008/1028 to go with it). It's like having an itch that needs to be scratched - I must have diesel square body.
If it was first titled in Illinois there’s a good chance it was passed to the Illinois national guard by the US Army. As of fifteen years ago the ING still had M1008s and M1009s in use on bases and it’s very possible that they still do, many of these trucks were sold or donated to guard bases in various states and police departments through the LEASO program.
...drove one of these in S Korea 1990 while I was in the Army - loved it.
That floor is in unbelievable shape compared to the ones we see here in the rust belt! Paint job is outstanding as well…thanks for sharing!
Thanks, I'm fortunate to have found one in such great shape nearby. Most of the really good ones always seem so far away!

The more I drive this thing the more I love it! Extra bonus: The wife and kids love it also. I couldn’t be happier to call it mine.
I've got an 86 as well in about the same condition I've had mine for about 14 years now and drive it regularly.
