In a college course on experimental film, that I was a TA for, we had a lecture about Plunderphonics. The professor was part of that subculture in the early 90’s analog days. He asked if anyone had any contemporary examples, the room was silent. I jumped in and discussed how communities of TH-cam shit posters would slowly evolve a joke into a standalone piece of art. I played the original ad, doin, and redoin in class. The class didn’t particularly care, but the professor was dumbstruck. A passion he once had, with so many barriers to entry, had burst open into a culture onto itself. TLDR: this almost moved my professor to tears
That's such a great story! The explosion in artistic communities is probably my favorite thing about living in the time period that I do (yknow other than general "people not being as shitty"-ness)--the tools for making art and for communicating about art are more accessible than they've ever been
I don't think ads would sell more if they replicated this. I think the magic in this exists because it is detached from corporate greed. Made for the joy of the soul, rather than the selling of it to buy more unnecessary material goods.
ReDoin did it. Redoin reached 1 million views on 7/25/21, christmas in july, 2021 at aprox. 10:20 EST. It's a literal australian christmas miracle, and also a miracle of the internet.
There's something so tragically nostalgic about this song. hhgregg went bankrupt and Daft Punk retired. Its like a childhood memory that has faded away. It makes me think of fluorescent lights, half-stocked shelves, partially missing drop-tile ceilings, and scratched linoleum floors. Goodbye K-mart, Goodbye Sears, Goodbye Blockbuster, Goodbye Circuit City, and Goodbye hhgregg.
There's still a few Sears stores hanging in there! I plan on visiting one a state over from me with some friends. East coast also has a Sears clone chain called Boscov's if you ever need a good dose of nostalgia! There's still some survivors of the good old days out there :)
I think what I love about this most other than it being just an absolutely killer track is that it's impossible to explain all the details of the origins of this song and video to someone who doesn't have any prior context, including the Joey's head Easter eggs, without sounding like you've completely lost it
For the curious, the video Essay was Art, Furries, God. It talks a lot about how the tension between comedy and sincerity can create some of the most emotional moments.

Honestly, this is the king of highly-produce shitposts. a remix of a mashup of an electronic music gem from a forgotten album, and an even older public commercial during christmas season, the first connection already a labor of love, done for no reason. when people ask what art could "mean".....in even a decade after labors of love, done out of sheer creativity like this, I literally won't know what to tell them.
This song fills me with nostalgia for a store I never went to. The instrumentation composition makes this song feel so warm and cozy, like a flashback to holidays long gone, ironic considering that the source material is a guy belting out a christmas in july song lol.
Between the beautiful retro synth lines and the lyrics being ripped from a commercial, this song manages to almost perfectly capture the feeling of watching TV at 2am when you were a child. When the ads started to get a little weird and you weren't really sure why you were still watching. This song feels like the past slipping away from you while you hopelessly try to hold on. I genuinely hate how emotional this song makes me feel. I'm sat here like a kid again at 2am, not really sure why I haven't gone to bed; why I'm still doing anything at all. Am I wasting the short time I have? Have I wasted the youth I was given? Why does this stipid video of a mascot that doesn't even exist in my country make me feel like this? I hope one day we all have the answers to these questions and I hope one day I can stop coming back to this video. Good luck brothers

hhgregg was the favorite meme of my friends and I a few years ago, and we listened to this constantly. At this point the song gives me a melancholic nostalgia. HH has been characterized in many different ways in the past, but to me he'll always be someone who loves his job. Who else would sing Christmas carols for his company? Who would get in the face by a snowball and not mind at all? Only HH would
When I listen to this while I'm high it is 7 and a half minutes long. I can hear every component of the production individually, and if I'm really gone they each cause bespoke inner eye visuals (usually ones that look like glitter, or glass, or cracked stone). I see through time and meaning. I pierce true enlightenment. It is a holy experience. Everything, truly, is on sale in hhhgregg.
one time when i was really little i stayed over at my cousins house and watched tv alone the entire night after everyone had gone to bed, then woke up to eggos on their paint-chipped high table. i also remember when i was in 5th grade, looking out my window during the summer with my laptop in my bed and just marveling how it could still be bright outside at 9 pm, then wondering if i was wasting my childhood playing games online. this song makes me think of little pieces of my soul like that.
We weren’t wasting our childhood playing video games. Video games were our childhood. It was back when a game would come out a finished product and we got absolute gems. It was before companies started to figure out they could nickel and dime everything and give us half finished crap. The time of when no one had responsibilities and we’d playing late into the night. Going to a friends house to play split screen. I hated school with every being of my soul but if I got the chance to go back and experience everything the same way again I would do it in a heartbeat
This song is basically the feeling of your childhood getting slowly and painfully sucked out of your subconscious. You want to go back to the simple days of playing with your toys or video games, but the world of adulthood keeps calling you to do the things you must do in order to keep the balance of the adult world going. It hurts.

This is just one of those videos I revisit every year or so. It's like an old friend I revisit every now and then to check up on. There's just something so classic and unforgettable about this little remix.
i think in some way a lot of nostalgia can be inherently linked to capitalism, whether that be malls, stores or in this case advertisements. we see advertisements all our lives, and with everything they lose relevancy as time passes, theres a type of tragedy to aged advertisements promoting a sale that no longer exists, or stores you can no longer enter, or companies long defunct having recorded evidence of when they were thriving theres new technology out there, more and more advertising and the wretched hand of capitalism grips the web each passing day, but one cant help but feel a bit melancholic at the remnants of old memories coming to pass
This shitpost of a song will forever live rent free, playing 24/7 in the back of my head. All thanks to it being in my autoplay once during my first time getting high. Thank you JerryTerry for this version, HydroDalek for doin, and Daft Punk for Doin' it Right in the first place. All three come together to make what might be the best example of Plunderphonics
The day this uploaded, my friend and I went into an abandoned building and hot boxed this room to this song. I'll never forget thst experience. We listened to this and 'The Legend of Jon Tron'. Mind bending masterpieces 👌
It's Black Friday. Everyone is laughing and making conversation. The kids are looking at all the products. You see a TV, it's the only one on. This plays on the TV. You feel a warm sensation cross over your whole body. A man comes up to you, and starts talking about the amazing night he's having, and you feel he could be a great friend. You both walk out of the store, laughing and having fun. It's the greatest night of your life. hhhgregg.
This was reccomeded to years after its release, and I am too young to understand the context. But this is still great, and it just proves that some works are timeless Great job 10/10 would recommend again
There is almost no context. Just look up hhgregg christmas in july ad, it’s edited from that. Hhgregg is its own rabbit hole (but it’s delightful). If you want to know more about it, PLEASE DO ITS AMAZING (coming from someone who has never been in one). I’ll explain here a little though: it was basically Best Buy, they had tvs, game consoles, appliances, that’s their thing. They went bankrupt in 2017 and closed all stores in 2018. People loved going there (or at least think it was iconic) and it has a HUGE online fandom. The mascot was named HH, he’s a rolled up hhgregg ad with a floating head above it. He’s very charming (AND FAMILY FRIENDLY)
This is great because the song here, regardless of the lyrics, is genuinely good and brings about an emotional reaction, from what I’ve seen, from everyone who listens to it, and the lyrics can be interpreted as some corporate commentary, y’know, the combination of the sound of advertisements down to the prices of products with a genuine bop is reminiscent of some cyberpunk underbelly rebellion jam, and it’s rly nice
2 million views today. it's march 23rd 2023 for future reference this has been a significant part of my life and it's great to see it hit another milestone
i remember listening to this and realising that the song that this was based on was most likely better, so i looked it up and listened to the song and i was disappointed to find that it was repetetive and nor nearly as atmospheric as this one. I finally decided to put my enjoyment above the embarrasment that may come with listening to this. Me: [visibly enjoying the music] oh man i love this song Person: what are u listening to Me: hhgregg sale
..."I finally decided to put my enjoyment above the embarrassment that may come with listening to this"... You fkn go, You lad! That attitude is one solemnly seen by mortal men and I highly respect you, in your ability to say something like that.
never seen this video or the ad before in my entire life. on top of this being a banger, after about a minute thirty into the song i suddenly felt an incredibly powerful wave of nostalgia

nothing fuels the youtube ecosystem like a video essay that introduces you to about 20 new things in the process of completely reshaping your worldview
It’s a weird kind of corporate nostalgia that gets evoked. The constant repetition of an ad that gets drilled in your head as a kid and remembered later when your older. Remembering a dumb ad that you might have liked or thought was annoying, wondering what happened to the company and finding out they went bankrupt, and that you’ll never really be able to go back to that time as a kid when a corporation interrupted the show you were watching for a gimmick promotion that ultimately didn’t save them.
I have this exact thing with a Safestyle windows ad in the UK. YOU KNOW THE ONE YOU BUY ONE, YOU GET ONE FREE I SAID YOU BUY ONE, YOU GET ONE FREE RIGHT NOW FOR EVERY SINGLE DOOR OR WINDOW YOU BUY ILL GIVE YOU ANOTHER ONE, ABSOLUTELY, FREE! And the whole time he's pushing windows in frames over onto the floor with an audible thud, dressed in a weird silk robe and with Ben Franklin type hair. And now I can't look at any "buy 1 get 1 free" offer or "door or window" without immediately thinking of it. I have no idea if they're still in business, all I know is I will never look at at those offers without envisioning a crazy guy knocking windows over.
It's amazing that you made something like this, something so happy sounding, that fills me with joy, and also made Kiss me (Kill me) which never fails to instill fear into my soul.

This is just one of those videos I revisit every year or so.
It's like an old friend I revisit every now and then to check up on.
There's just something so classic and unforgettable about this little remix.
I feel the same
singing the whole song without messing it up feels so incredibly cathartic
I want it printed on a shirt damnit

i think in some way a lot of nostalgia can be inherently linked to capitalism, whether that be malls, stores or in this case advertisements. we see advertisements all our lives, and with everything they lose relevancy as time passes, theres a type of tragedy to aged advertisements promoting a sale that no longer exists, or stores you can no longer enter, or companies long defunct having recorded evidence of when they were thriving
theres new technology out there, more and more advertising and the wretched hand of capitalism grips the web each passing day, but one cant help but feel a bit melancholic at the remnants of old memories coming to pass
i lowkey want a version of this with the actual Doin it right lyrics

it's so close to reaching a Million views, and hitting that goal on Christmas in July would be godlike
WE DID IT, DURING THE RIGHT TIME TOO!!!
YES!
How long till Cyranek comes back to see the video with 1 million views now. Congratulations JerryTerry.
This has been stuck inside my head ever since hearing it during a stream... It's... perfect.
The day this uploaded, my friend and I went into an abandoned building and hot boxed this room to this song. I'll never forget thst experience. We listened to this and 'The Legend of Jon Tron'. Mind bending masterpieces 👌
hot boxed..... what......
Don't try to trick me Jerry. This is Banana shoes and you can't tell me otherwise.
I also thought that
bruh both had the same exact opening instruments
Not sure if you guys are joking (I apologize if you are), but this is a remix of Doin' it right by Daft Punk.

Actually Doin' it Right by Daftpunk is a remix of Banana Shoes

It's Black Friday. Everyone is laughing and making conversation. The kids are looking at all the products. You see a TV, it's the only one on. This plays on the TV. You feel a warm sensation cross over your whole body. A man comes up to you, and starts talking about the amazing night he's having, and you feel he could be a great friend. You both walk out of the store, laughing and having fun. It's the greatest night of your life.

@@YuukiTakemoto1996 this video came out in 2017 how tf was it playin
This was reccomeded to years after its release, and I am too young to understand the context.
But this is still great, and it just proves that some works are timeless
Great job 10/10 would recommend again
When he said "32 inch LCD-TV, $299!" I felt that 😭
Congrats on 1 million views, this has been one of my favorite videos on youtube. thank you
merry christmas to the world's best remix of a parody of a daft punk song.
Here for Christmas in July 2020
The original ad is 10 years old now
This is great because the song here, regardless of the lyrics, is genuinely good and brings about an emotional reaction, from what I’ve seen, from everyone who listens to it, and the lyrics can be interpreted as some corporate commentary, y’know, the combination of the sound of advertisements down to the prices of products with a genuine bop is reminiscent of some cyberpunk underbelly rebellion jam, and it’s rly nice
Dont be fooled by the electronic nature of this piece. There is something incredibly organic and human about its existence.
Happy 1 million in July!

It gave hhhgregg worldwide fame.
cannot believe i missed such a historical event. still, such a beautiful thing to behold
Glad I could contribute to this, we’re almost there!
i remember listening to this and realising that the song that this was based on was most likely better, so i looked it up and listened to the song and i was disappointed to find that it was repetetive and nor nearly as atmospheric as this one. I finally decided to put my enjoyment above the embarrasment that may come with listening to this.
Me: [visibly enjoying the music] oh man i love this song
Person: what are u listening to
Me: hhgregg sale
What was the original?
doin it right - daft punk
The original is "doin" and is better cause it loops better

It’s a weird kind of corporate nostalgia that gets evoked. The constant repetition of an ad that gets drilled in your head as a kid and remembered later when your older. Remembering a dumb ad that you might have liked or thought was annoying, wondering what happened to the company and finding out they went bankrupt, and that you’ll never really be able to go back to that time as a kid when a corporation interrupted the show you were watching for a gimmick promotion that ultimately didn’t save them.
I have this exact thing with a Safestyle windows ad in the UK.
YOU KNOW THE ONE
YOU BUY ONE, YOU GET ONE FREE
I SAID YOU BUY ONE, YOU GET ONE FREE
RIGHT NOW FOR EVERY SINGLE DOOR OR WINDOW YOU BUY
ILL GIVE YOU ANOTHER ONE, ABSOLUTELY, FREE!
This is the best gift that July has ever given us
Idk what it is, but this gives me so much nostalgia. I know this was originally a meme, but man does this quality song give me the feels.
Thank you Avery, now I can't stop watching this
Happy Christmas in July, everybody!
