This was wonderful to find. My mother worked on the track at Pompolona hut from 1966-72. Her name is Marlene..the creek was named after her. She was delighted to see your video.

This has been the far most spectacular video introducing Milford track and was of great help for a dreamer like me who wishes to visit there. Thank you so much for providing such an incredible film Graham!

Beautiful video, so there really is no need for anyone else to make one. I am a New Zealander, born in NZ and the drones drive us mad. When we go on day walks we go for the natural environment, and for the peace, which we love to share with others. Glad you refer to the official DOC website, because there have been very recent changes to booking dates and charges due to so many tourists abusing these high profile tracks. Now, a lot of Kiwis keep off them, and use the lesser known tracks where there won’t be drones and toilet paper on the tracks which is just gross. We ask tourists to come, and please have respect and good manners.

I did this in 97". I did it about as slow as you did and I was 25. It is the way to do it because the sections are not long and if done quick you are just left sitting at huts. Way better to double or triple the walk times and stop to look at everything. If ever on the west coast I recommend "Welcome flat Hut ". cheap. only an overnight to main hut. it is down past the glaciers.

I see they have enlarged the huts. In 1984 (when i did the walk when I was 35) there were only 24 beds for independent walkers. Still looks fabulous. The walk down from MacKinnon's pass was the hardest. On the last day we had over 24 inches of rain.

Loved your video thanks so much. Great shots, great sense of humor, great people that I can relate to. Would love to see more of your treks. My only tiny thing, in my humble opinion, is the music was a tad loud. But, your excellent cinematography and wonderful sense of humour made up for it tenfold. Thanks for sharing.

Inspirational trail. We've heard of Milford Sound of course but to see it in this way from the trail perspective is invigorating and enticing. I think the temperate rain forest would have been one of the highlights for me. Brilliantly filmed. ATB. Mark (Wye Explorer) England.

Better by far than any proprietary insect repellent is one you can make quite easily by yourself. It is a 50/50 mixture of Olive Oil and "Dettol" (a popular antiseptic solution). It may smell a bit awful, but so do many of the proprietary solutions, and if you happen to scratch yourself, the dettol's antiseptic properties will be appreciated. Also, the olive oil is good for the skin. Just shake up the mixture before each application, as it will separate. Then smear over most of the exposed surfaces -- and if you miss some, it won't matter. As with all anti-insect preparations -- do not get any in your eyes. I learnt about this many years ago before walking the Track -- and had enough time to go to the grocery shop and get a small bottle each of olive oil and dettol, then to the pharmacy for a spare bottle, then mix some. Easy, and it worked a treat! Even while sitting still it kept the mosquitoes -- those awful, dreaded, otherwise voracious, Milford Track mosquitoes, at bay. I enjoyed my walk without being bitten.

Great video, Graham, Tina and Paul!
I really enjoyed your informative commentary day by day together with stunning shots (especially those made with drone - great idea)! It almost put me on the track and made me cry - as it recalls back the memories of my bicycle tour around New Zealand and few tracks I've made there (well, only Kepler Track and Tongariro Crossing of the Great Walks - and it was a big mistake to make only these two!)
Your close ups of inquisitive birds, ferns and moss covered trees, everchanging and challenging NZ weather and nasty sandflies - excellent and so true! I wish to get back again...
I just wonder if you have only this one travel experience video online? Looks like you are very professional in filming and keen on hiking, so I would expect more stuff like this on your profile.
Best wishes to Kiwi Land from Prague, Czech Republic
    Tom

Just a few logistics about the booking of freedom places on the track which aren't covered in the otherwise excellent video.
You goto bookings.doc.govt.nz/Saturn/Facilities/SearchViewGW.aspx?placeId=466, select the beginning day, and that night and next two are booked for the huts (Clinton, Mintaro, Dumpling) . The Track booking also includes the ferry crossings across lake Te Anau on the first day and the ferry trip across Milford sound on the last.
You also book the bus connections from Te Anau township to Te Anau Downs dock and Mildford Sound township back to Te Anau at the beginning and end respectively at the same time. Though you can book the bus trips separately, it isn't worth the effort as the prices don't get cheaper with a separate booking. It's only worth making separate bus connections for the return trip from Milford if you are going to spend time in the Sound immediately after completing the track or are going further than Te Anau on the last day (say all the way back to Queenstown).
Also the avalanche "no stopping zones" only apply when there enough snow on the mountains above to cause an avalanche risk. This is usually only during the early or late part of the walking season ( end Oct to end of April) though it's possible in this part of the country to get snow falls at any time of year, hence why the signs are left up all season.
Finally you can walk the track outside the official season, but you need to be experienced in and equipment for ,Alpine conditions including training in avalanche awareness. Though the huts are a lot cheaper to stay in off season, its harder to organise water transport to the start and finish and a lot of the smaller foot bridges are removed to save them from damage during winter. It means you need also to be able to cross flooded water courses (or more importantly knowing when not to risk attempting it) which occur all too frequently. Milford Sound has annual precipitation of something like 8-10 metres a year.
