I don't think that one can reasonably say that laws, for example, outlawing theft, assault, murder, etc, are "oppressive restrictions", however the case for making such a statement against lockdown measures does seem to be growing stronger. Many people are beginning to wonder "when is this going to end?".
Now you could make the argument that the efforts of those resisting covid restrictions are counter productive to their own cause, accelerating the spread of the disease and therefore prolonging the necessity of such measures. Such an assumption however assumed that the "emergency powers" taken by governments in response to covid are going to be repealed at any point in the near future, which seems doubtful given current trajectory or policy making on the issue.
There has to come a point when we ask ourselves, for how much longer are we going to keep our countries and economies hobbled by restrictions, to combat a disease which at this point is simply not going to go away. While it does significantly improve your odds and reduce the likelihood of transmission, vaccination does not prevent one from catching or spreading the disease, so what are we going to do, thunderfoot? Continue to impose restrictions every time there is a spike in cases? For how long? For how much damage to our economy and at what eventual cost to people's personal freedoms? At what point does the damage to mental health, livelihood, and exacerbation of other health conditions left untreated due to doctors ongoing reluctance to see patients face-to-face (this is happening in the UK at least, I cannot speak for other countries, but speak to anyone in the NHS and they will most likely tell you that hospitals have been increasingly overrun by people whose chronic health conditions were left untreated during the last 2 years either due to fear of covid or inability to get a doctor appointment) outweigh the damage done by COVID, especially in a mostly vaccinated population?
The people were told that we had to suffer now to keep vulnerable people safe until a vaccination was prepared and administered to the population. This process has now been completed, for the most part, yet restrictions remain. So naturally, some people are miffed about this.
And on the unvaccinated - are we genuinely prepared to effectively treat them as a second class citizen and bar those without proof of vaccination from participating in elements of society? How far will this eventually go? Perhaps scientifically the approach makes sense, but morally and from a standpoint of anti-authoratiarian politics, it is a very dystopian concept.
And my final point - when power is taken from the people by the government, it is much harder to get that back. We should be very careful about throwing away liberties that took hundreds of years of struggle and progress to become part and parcel of western societies, and just trusting that governments will just as quickly return them at some unspecified point in the future.
