Building the Wood magazine Little Free Library (WOOD

  • This is a Little Free Library I built for a Girl Scout community outreach program. I used the plans available in Wood Magazine Issue 238 from March 2016. The only difference is that I made a type of wooden angle piece to cover the corners to ensure better water resistance to the internal library (see video at approximately 4:15). I did not use the hardware suggested in the magazine but opted for something cheaper I found at my local big box store. Even still, the library came in at around $80, more or less, so the pricing estimate provided in the magazine is pretty accurate.

This is top notch craftsmanship in my opinion! Beautiful work! I'm running a subcommittee in our 4H group for a little library in one of our local towns. It's a small town of about 800 people, but they were so excited to hear we'd picked them as our project town! Looking forward to implementing this plan, or close to, for ours!

That is an awesome help! For those on a budget, you don't have to do all that trim work on the sides etc. And if you can only cut the insert area for the window, you can also just do that on the table saw. Also, you can use different hinges, so you don't have to cut the indent for the door to fit into the cut-out for the door on the front. A few fewer steps will help those who do not have all the jigs and saws in place...which I hope helps others take this GREAT design and make their own. The one for our nature centre will only be 12" x24" inside so that too will help when buying lumber. It's expensive these days, so the more you can get from a piece of 4x8' sheets the better:) We are also using a wood knob for older fingers to use with magnetic catches on the inside of the door. Because we are wall-mounting our unit, the roof will be a slightly slanted forward flat boxed look, so the back will not be affected by the weather. I am putting some copper on the roof with tar paper under it, so no need for the extra wood on top. The centre gets a wide range of visitors winter and summer. Cheers everyone...hope this helps more to build:) LOVE this video, would have been nice with a few more comments but I think there is one on google search...:) CHEERS!

Great build my friend. Love your attention to detail. You can stop an actual craftsman after watching a few mins. Well done!!

A nice looking project, Sir. I have a corner of scraps that may just work, especially given the cost of materials now a days.

I enjoyed the build but I sure would have liked to hear some talking. You know, like I decided to do this or I need to make it this way or I this kind of wood and this thick. That would have nice. See you on the next video.

Nice work. My panel cutter is getting old and I have decided to build a new one. However, when I saw yours in this video that allows you to cut angles, I decided that's the way to go

I agree with the other comment. Some explanation as to why you were doing something one way as opposed to the way it was explained in the article. I really like the way you cut the front out of a solid piece, I did it the way it was described in the article, and like your process a bit more.

Very nice...am going to build one of these this week...bought their plans. What does the tag above the door say.

Hi - I cannot find the dimensions to the project on Wood Magazine anywhere. Can you at least tell me the dimensions of one of the panels so I have something to go off of? Thank you Trevor

Hi. Nice build. What type(s) of wood did you use in the project?

I was wondering what type of hinge you used with the different thicknesses of the door and siding. Is it an offset hinge?
