    Great video Nina!!! For me, one of my biggest design pet peeves that you didn't mention was lighting that is not the correct scale for the space. OMG. I am SO aware of that!!!!!

    I am soooo happy you mentioned those tacky old “professional” family photos. I must admit that most of my friends and family don’t cheapen their homes with those but when I do walk into someone’s house and see those big photos my skin crawls. In my opinion it ranks us there with dirty wall-to-wall shag carpeting from the 60s. A bedroom or private space is definitely the place for family pictures. I have also been told by realtors that the family photos are the first thing that must come down when selling a house…totally get it!

    • @ultravioletpisces3666
      @ultravioletpisces3666 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes because they personalize the home. Which is why people would want them up when they live there.
      When you sell your house, the goal is to remove as much of “you” from the home so people can see themselves in it. It’s the opposite when you make your house your home.

    I agree with not hanging big family photos but I like to put small photos of my grandkids on table tops so they feel special when they come Over . I never get tired of looking at them . They make me happy … I really don’t care what guest think about them .

    Hi Nina! Your channel has been an inspiration to me when it comes to design, so THANK YOU! However, it's also my PERSONAL opinion that your home is YOUR home - not your guests, or anybody that you invite into it. Thus - if family (and that includes pets) photos makes YOU happy when you walk into your home, then by all means blow them up and hang them as artwork! After all, it's assumed that anyone you invite into your home is trusted, and would LOVE to see your family photos!! Again - just my personal opinion! Thank you !

      Exactly! 100% agree. Anyone who feels that my “outdated” photos of my family are being “shoved down their eyeballs” is probably not someone I want in my home.
      Maybe it’s a regional type of thing because where I am from, it would be much more unusual not to display your family.
      I’d say… if you are a very family oriented person, display your family. If you aren’t, then don’t try to make your home reflect that you are.
      I can’t for the life of me future out why family photos (you literally paid to have a photo for the reason of display) needs to be “discrete.”
      This whole particular section is strange to me… again maybe it’s regional or cultural because a lot of people in the comments agree.
      But I also like going into peoples homes and seeing family photos on the wall. Again, that’s the very point of taking photos… to SHOW them, not to hide them away “discretely.”

    @nasevedodge2551 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well done ...... absolutely you hit all 6 points ....”family photos” I did them in albums so they are tucked away and if someone want to see them they are there...... Curtains what curtains I have taken them down in our great room so my walls are breathing and I don’t have to worry about getting the right size !! We have very private back yard that allows us to this and don’t have worry if the size is right .... but that was definitely a great point to make!! Love your dress and great points Nina

      I do too… in my bedrooms and hallways (private areas). The reason for my comment is I walked into a home for the first time and over the fireplace there was a picture of only one member of the family and it was 8 ft wide by 10 ft tall. It was a beautiful space but it was completely dominated by the picture. Perfectly fine if that’s what you like but it came across to me as tacky, vain and even creepy (eyes followed you no matter where you stood in the room lol).

      The wedding photo: this is us, on the only day of our lives where we were dressed to the nines. Look upon us. I know, I know, I’m being snarky. You want to show it off, do it, but just know that some visitors will find it kitschy.

    Nina, I love you however, if anyone is coming over at my house, they are going to see a beautiful family black and white Family portraits. My home is not a Hotel, and should be personal.
    I also believe that people that feel uncomfortable with your family photos perhaps should not be there at all!
    A home is place of celebration, a place where memories a are made and shared.
    So sorry, but to me that’s when design
    No longer serves the Client. Most family homes in the USA and all over the world have family photos throughout the house. Honestly I don’t even trust people that don’t have family photos and kids art hung 😂😳

    Love your video but I disagree with you regarding family photos on the wall. Family photos make it personal and homey. I’ve never heard of such a thing ; however in a loft area or family room I think family photos look wonderful. I would have to correct you and one should put family photos with discretion on walls in a private area if their home . This is what I did . It looks lovely. It’s private to the family and in an appropriate area .

    • @NinaTakesh
      @NinaTakesh  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think how you described the tacky family photo at the end of its description made most sense. You weren’t saying no photos- you seemed to be specifying no dated looking photos, dated looking frames, or those tacky stylized photo shoots where everyone’s outfit colors coordinate. If people keep it looking fresh, modern, without matchy outfits, and not the oversized photo over the mantle, it looks personal & cozy. I think a well done gallery wall mixed with non-photo objects can look nicely dramatic.

    Agree with all of it. But I do not agree on those black curtain rods that all Americans use! (unless your wall is black) Why - on white walls? it is ugly and cuts the wall. Use rods that are less noticeable, like white or better yet, paint them the same colour as the wall.

      @@NinaTakesh I'm actually Carol. It's under my husbands name for some reason. I have such a problem with ignorant people. Some just watch to criticize. I'm 75 yrs. old and have always loved to decorate. The plan was to be an interior designer, but then came 3 kids. It's still my "obsession". I'm transitional I guess (love modern with a soft touch). I love accessories! I think they can make or break a room. My house appears staged, but in a comfortable way. I don't like clutter. Some of these people are not going to give up the photos, but it really does take away from a beautiful room. I have 3 wedding pictures in my hallway. The rest is in an album. Long story short because I usually don't respond on you tube,but I know some comments hurt feelings and are just not welcome. You are very classy in how you present things. I only watch a few channels because many of them are not really my taste, but still informative sometimes. Your home is perfect! Could you show it again? You speak your mind, and I like that. Please don't change.

    I'm so happy you just said that about hanging art too high I don't know why people do this. Artwork should be eye level or a little above eye level. As it would be viewed in an art gallery 💖💖💖 . I love family photos say perhaps in a bedroom or on a large sofa table in a living room

    Agreed straight down the list except lately I’m having a problem with curtains that run too high and too low. To fix it I guess have a blind hung high in the center part up top and molding placed under window to make the wall look like part of the window frame. I think curtains too long for the windows is a kin to shutters on the outside of the house too long for the window. 🤢🤢🤢

      Of course you didn’t have photos of them before they existed, duh.

      @@rubyoro0 You missed the point. I never had any photos up at all prior to becoming a parent. DUH!

    Made me laugh at your hesitancy on#6. I recently saw a model’s home on AD that had a black and white symmetrical photo gallery that I copied. 🤷‍♀️ 😂 but will remove it if House Beautiful or AD ever come for a shoot 🤣🤣🤣

    I do so agree with all of your pet peeves, particularly the one about family photos! I know many people who treat family photos as artwork. No one really enjoys seeing staged family photos of anyone! When I go to someone's home with these family photos I just think they have bad taste or they are too cheap to invest in artwork.
