DIY BLACK SAND MAGNET

This black sand magnet is a handy little item that is easy and inexpensive to make and can remove all the black sand out of your concentrates, sluice, miller table or gold pan.
I have found these also to be useful in locating gold in a stream bed or on dry land. Gold and black sand are usually found together. If you dig down into a spot on the stream bed or sand bar and don't find a fair amount of black sand you likely won't find much gold either. It isn't a guaranteed solution but it gives you a better chance than just digging blind and hoping for something in the pan. I use these to test ancient and dry river beds to see which rocks or sand bars the black sand has settled under. It will usually help you find it.
This is the way I make mine. As usual with my projects you can make any modifications you want to fit your needs. You can make them longer, shorter or whatever. You can make them into a walking stick with the magnet in the tip to let you explore materials you run into as you hike or take samples out in a stream before you use a hand dredge to suck up the sand.
