Paul's dreamed that his mother was standing in front of his bed saying: Let it Be, the same as she was used to do when he was a child. She died when he was 14. The hour of darkness refers to the probably end of the Beatles but there's still a chance the day will see. He suffered so much, man.

I don't know how you came to this version, sometimes I feel like people will not appreciate a demo version like this, but fortunately you have that kind of warm heart mate! That's comforting!

Let It Be is a gift to the world. I've been listening to it for 50 years and it's still extremely emotional. Sometimes I think about John's murder. Sometimes I think about George's death. Sometimes I think about my current situation living in my car. Sometimes I think about world events. It always gets to me.
If you want to watch more of the Get Back sessions there's an 8 hour documentary that Peter Jackson (of Lord of the Rings) put together.

This song was there for me during dark times also. It's like there's an understanding held within the lyric that wraps its arms around you when you feel inconsolable. Holds you when you need to let it all out and lets you know it will be ok.

A year after his mother passed, Paul met John, and joined his little "Quarrymen" group. A year later, John's mother, Julia, was hit by a drunken police officer going home from the pub. This was a critical bonding moment between Lennon and McCartney.

There is an interesting story that goes with this song. Paul says it best himself. He had a dream where he saw his mother, who kept repeating "let it be" which is why he says "mother Mary" although most people think he is talking about the virgin Mary.

I like your reaction about this song. I remember the exact spot on the road I was driving when I heard it on the radio a day of april 1970. They said it was the last song of the beatles and I was full of apprehension. I was quite amazed by the beauty of the song because the beatles had said that the recordings of january 69 had been a nightmare, they were not satisfied with them. So I thought that the remaining songs to be released were to be bad. But when the LP "Let it be" was released in june 1970 I was once again surprised that it was a very good LP. About the song Let it be, I remember having heard the spokeman on radio saying that it seems that Paul is turning very catholic because of the word "Mary"

You should watch the sequence from the Get Back documentary where Paul, George and Ringo are waiting around for John to show up and while they do it Paul just plucks the title song, "Get Back", straight out of the ether. It's freaking amazing.

It's a great version. I was born and bred in Liverpool and went to the same school as Mc Cartney and Harrison. I was 5 when The Beatles hit. I can still remember a certain buzz about the place, even though I was only young!

Thank you for sharing your connection to this song. I was fortunate in being born at the right time to grow up with the Beatles. Their music has meant so much to not just my generation, but so many who have come after. I just love your calm assertion that there's a reason the Beatles are still on top of the list. You got me - I've subscribed.

The 3-part Documentary, "Get Back", has hours of this very fly-on-the-wall impression of us hanging out in the same room, as musical geniuses allow their personal issues to interact with the creative process. I've only seen the first of three installments, and it was like watching old friends struggling to stay together after their love for each other has seemingly left for college with the kids! lol
But seriously, it broke my heart (which might explain why I haven't finished it yet), but it's part of our cultural history and needs to be seen if only to experience what legends are like, when they forget the cameras are rolling.

So, basically, Paul's mother (Mary) came to him in a dream and told him to Let It Be, it was all going to be okay. He was going through a very rough time as the Beatles were breaking up. Now, a few years earlier, he woke up with the entire tune of Yesterday in his head. He asked just about everyone he knew if they had heard it before as he couldn't quite believe it that it wasn't something he picked up from somewhere else. The working title of Yesterday was Scrambled Eggs. Obviously, he brilliantly thought of better lyrics.

The idea behind of what became the 'Let it be' album was to go back to basics, the raw sound as you call it. The project got shelved and was eventualy (over)produced by Phil Spector. McCartney has said that he always liked the raw versions better and in 2003 finally pushed for the release of these versions the way they meant it to be. It was released as a newly mixed, official Beatles album: Let it be... naked.
This is a very cool album, worth adding to your collection. And as a bonus, there's a second cd of studio chatter, which is sort of a prelude to Peter Jacksons' Get Back movie.

Good for you listening to the pared down version instead of the over the top orchestra/choir version. John Lennon on bass. this was a filmed rehearsal during the Let It Be/Ge Back movie sessions from January 1969. George had not really developed the guitar solo yet. And Paul changed the words on purpose being funny about their roadie Mal Evans.. Billy Preston on organ. song sat dormant for almost a year...the single was different from the album version. You're a very articulate guy keep up the good work.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND "Tom Traubert's Blues (4 Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen)" by Tom Waits (Also known as "Waltzing Matilda"). His voice is so unique that one critic once described it as though "it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months and then taken outside & run over with a car"! He's a well-regarded & respected songwriter from within the "Rock" genre from the 70's & 80's. I'd LOVE to hear your take on his signature song. Link Here: th-cam.com/video/hW2vyytxCGM/w-d-xo.html
