Biscuits and gravy are a main dish meal eaten primarily for breakfast but Americans are big "breakfast for dinner" people so it could appear at your table at any time of day or evening.

Exactly. When I was in the Air Force, I was night shift, so my dinner was breakfast. I would get steak and eggs a lot.
But my favorite was the milk and chocolate milk. The milk was soooo cold and it was whole, not skimmed. It came out of a huge stainless steel dispenser that you lifted a heavy stainless steel nob. The milk would pour into your glass. It was so cold, so it it dense. It didn't splash while going into the glass. It is something that I remember with great fondness to this day 40 years later.

If you're nervous about recording, don't sweat it! Just remember two things: First, everyone will hear the accent, assume you're visiting, and go on about their day, or maybe want to say hello! Second, you get to go home afterwards! Even if they do think you're weird, who cares? You never have to see them again anyway, who cares what they think? :D

    • @kailynnnelson2435
      @kailynnnelson2435 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I also think about it this way: all they're doing is sitting and eating and then talking about the food, just like everyone else in the restaurant, the only difference is you also have a camera with you. As long as you're not being loud and are sort of out of the way then it's not a big deal. I don't think most people will notice. I think Jolly may get a bit more attention because they have Ducky and Luke with the camera gear so they take up a bit more space. But I don't think most people really notice them when they're filming. It seems that most of the time they get a table that's sort of out of the way so they don't bother people.

    • @spaceshiplewis
      @spaceshiplewis 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Jolly gets permission to set up and film and there seems to be a lot of scheduling things behind the scenes. The hospitality and willingness of Americans to share and explain our culture helps. Plus, Americans are usually louder at the table and so talking in a normal voice is less weird here than in England/Jersey.
The only annoying thing is that some stores don't like filming and you'll either just need to use a phone camera, which is decent enough now. Or, get permission to film beforehand. Usually if you explain what you are doing, it would be fine.

Cafe du monde has never closed. They have opened every day for so long that it’s an absolute staple of the city of New Orleans. You also hear jazz music from there as street bands play in front of the restaurant. The only time they ever closed was when the entire French quarter was flooded by hurricane Katrina. The mayor actually wanted cafe du monde back open as soon as possible as it’s that important to the city. The cafe is so historic and important that people love the place beyond measure as the atmosphere is amazing with the jazz music and just the amount of people there is incredible.

But biscuits and GRAVY will never be a dessert. That's just never going to be. Now butter and jam? Heaven. Especially when the jam is homemade. Call it breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert, just don't miss it. Blackberry, raspberry, strawberry, peach, apricot jams, are all delicious on homemade biscuits. It's also lovely on pancakes, waffles, and French toast. When we were little, and Grama was making pies for Grampa, she would roll the extra pie crust out and bake it on a cookie sheet. When it was cool enough to handle, we'd put which ever homemade jam of grama's on our pieces of flaky pie crust, and wolf it down. Warm pie crust and homemade jam. BEST DESSERT EVER!

biscuits are a quick bread in terms of what they fall into in the baking world, they are primarily a breakfast item, but can be used interchangeably with dinner rolls as a side for other meals. not saying you should put sausage gravy over dinner rolls, completely different texture. but as a savory, flaky, buttery type of bread biscuits get used for more than just breakfast.

Be careful referring to Texas as the south, Texas is its own thing, and is only loosely related to the south. p.s. Cafe Du Monde is always busy, and there is almost always a line extending down the sidewalk to get a table, as it is one of those places where it seems all tourist must take a photo and post it on social media. As to Mr H's video sitting outdoors at Coopers BBQ in Fort Worth, I think they filmed this video mid day on a weekday after the lunch rush.

Hi guys! I'm from Louisiana and this got me hungry! It's no wonder that the people in New Orleans have a weight problem. The beignettes at Cafe Du Monde go great with a cup of their café au lait. Beignettes are simply fried bread dough sprinkled with powdered sugar, but they are really great when made fresh.
Bananas Foster are a real treat too. They don't really lend themselves to making at home, so it's best to get them in a restaurant.
I'm glad they included bread pudding. It's simple to make at home, and is a good way to use stale bread up. It's just bread, eggs, butter, milk, and raisins with a little cinnamon. For variety you can use chopped peaches or apples or even cranberries instead of raisins.
You can find the recipe for banana pudding on the box of vanilla wafers. It's bananas, vanilla custard and vanilla wafers topped with merengue or whipped cream.

My favorite southern dessert are pralines and I make them.
These Southern Buttermilk Pecan Pralines are rich, creamy and melt-in-your-mouth delicious! The addition of pecans is the perfect complement to these sweet blissful bites!
    INGREDIENTS
237 ml buttermilk, not low fat
    400 grams sugar (canister sugar)
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    3 tablespoon real butter
    218 grams pecan halves
    INSTRUCTIONS
Line two cookie sheets with wax paper and set aside.
Combine the buttermilk, sugar, salt and baking soda in a large heavy saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Clip a candy thermometer on the side of the pan and continue cooking over medium low heat (#4 on an electric stove), stirring constantly, until candy reaches 236F/114C degrees on the candy thermometer.
Remove pan from heat and add the butter and vanilla. Do not stir. Place pan in a sink of cold water and allow to cool to lukewarm, about 5 minutes. Test by placing your finger in the candy. When it’s just warm, remove the pan from the water.
Beat candy by hand until it becomes slightly thick and creamy, about five minutes. Beat it for a minute, then stop and let it rest for a few seconds, then beat it again. It will start to slightly lose its shiny, glossy appearance. It should become the consistency of peanut .
Do not wait until the candy has lost all of its glossy appearance or it will set up too quickly before you can drop it onto wax paper. The candy will finish turning once it’s dropped onto the wax paper.
If you do over beat the candy and it begins to set up in pan, add a few drop of hot water and beat it with a wooden spoon until it’s smooth again.
Add the pecans and mix to combine. Immediately drop onto wax paper, using a tablespoon.
Allow candy to set for at least two hours. You will notice the candy losing its remaining glossy look and turning to a satiny sheen while it sets.
Store candy in an airtight container.
    NOTES
Yield is about 1 1/2 pounds. Serving pieces depends on size of dropped candy. I used a slightly heaped tablespoon to drop them.
Total time does not include cooling and beating.
It’s important to cook this candy to 236 degrees. I see many pictures of this candy posted, where it has been under cooked. When it’s undercooked the result will be a sugary brown candy. The candy should be a lighter golden color and have a very creamy texture.
If the bottom of candy is slightly sticky after two hours, flip pieces over and allow to set a few minutes until bottoms are dry.
If the candy doesn't set quick enough just scrape it off the wax paper and recook it.

British tourists who vlog their trips to Florida say they have no problems vlogging in the US. They say the British public isn’t as fully accepting as here in the US, so get stared at. Beignets are a popular dessert at one of the Disney resorts in Orlando, as the grounds are loosely based on the architecture of New Orleans. It’s not so much the beignets go cold, but they get hard when they are cold. You have to eat them when they are warm. There’s also a chain of restaurants in New Orleans called Cafe Beignet. You can get beignets there as well. I wouldn’t waste my time at the main location, as the help there is not helpful.

Hi, James and Millie! When I was a child, living in my Houston hometown of Texas, my parents took my brother and me to New Orleans which is only 6 hour drive from Houston. Yes, do GO to the French Quarters to experience the famous French Coffee and Beignets. We dipped the fresh hot Beignets into the coffee. Sweet melting mixture of Beignets and coffee to die for (American expression of heavenly bliss!)! The flavors of the flaming Rum flavored based brown sugar, bananas, and vanilla ice cream is so sweet in that you can actually taste the Rum liquor in the liquid. You will love it. Take a tour on the horse drawn carriage through the French Quarters district, be a passenger on the Showboat down the river, see the horses on the racetrack, and visit the old historical Southern plantation just outside of New Orleans. I have been back to New Orleans several time since my childhood. Have fun planning your American trips! ❤🙋‍♀️

Keep in mind much of north America was under French rule before the US and Canada were formed. Many traditions and cuisines specifically in the American south, but from all over that get attributed as American are actually French in origin, or of a kind of French that had heavy native influence in present day Canada, and who would come to be known as Cajun in the US.

Depends on the type of gravy. Most of the time, when we say biscuits and gravy, we mean sausage gravy which is savory and is either a side or main part of breakfast. However, there is chocolate gravy that’s put on biscuits and that’s sweet and eaten as dessert.
I wasn’t impressed with cafe du monde, but I love banana fosters - definitely worth a try. My wife loves bread pudding and I make it frequently for her -especially if I have old homemade bread. That banana pudding didn’t look very tasty. The pudding we eat in both Georgia and Alabama is vanilla custard with sliced bananas and vanilla wafers layered like a trifle and topped with meringue. That’s the stuff (especially when still warm) that will make your day.
The problem with baking anything “southern” is that there’s so much variation in this region. Texas is its own breed, as are the Cajuns in New Orleans (which are different from the Creoles). I was born in Alabama and my wife is from rural Georgia and there are pretty big differences between us culturally. Language (I use more brand names as generics (ie MixMaster for mixer, Skil saw for circular saw, etc) food (my dressing has more sage and is pretty moist, hers is very oniony and dry) not to mention football (I’m heavily invested in the iron bowl even though I’m a Georgia Tech grad and she’s more invested in what’s happening in the SEC East even as a Tech grad) show how differently we were raised within

Biscuits and gravy are technically a breakfast, but breakfast food doesn't mean much here in America, as we'll eat breakfast food anytime...

I’m not 100% certain why the UK has bananas if they don’t make banana pudding.
The biscuits in it are called vanilla wafers. You typically mix them into the pudding along with whipped cream.

Visiting the states, food can be regional. Picking a region can be tricky, the south has great food but the west has the best scenery.

I learned just barely you can buy beignet batter from online. I honestly need to remember to buy it. Also Banana Foster isn't something you can do at home on your own easy. If you have ever watched the Disney film Princess and the Frog, beignets are in there. Looks to be best piping hot.

I laugh at the comment that "Americans thought to add spice'. The reality is that 'Americans' appreciated and incorporated the immigrated cuisine. Many of the flavors are thanks to a another nations' culture.

There's likely more sugar cane growing near New Orleans...so why not douse everything in sugar? It just makes sense!

Lol yall talked through the whole part telling Jolly how to pronounce Beignets its pronounced Ben yays!! Biscuits while can be eaten whenever is a Breakfast food. We eat them with gravy, sausage gravy for a savory taste we also can add meat my fave is a toss up between sausage egg, cheese & grape jelly and fried chicken biscuits with mustard. They are also eaten sweet with any flavor jelly or jam and my favorite syrup (Alaga is the best brand) Bread pudding made out of Krispy Kreme donuts is a life changer!! Yall Texas is not the go to for Southern food.. Brisket & beef BBQ yes but Southern and Soul food you need the Southern states Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi and the Carolina states!

100% southern breakfast. It's a side item. It would be like biscuit and gravy, grits and country ham. A good breakfast in the south. I live in east Tennessee so I guess I qualify as a southerner.
