      He made cardboard. Yes he should have used cloth as a filter but then if you have cloth and plenty of water then you don’t need toilet paper. Maybe just find some soft leaves to use all summer.

    Wood pulp is best made from green wood. It needs to soak for a long time to get the best quality. I've made paper before and it needs to be conditioned to keep it soft. You basically made wood pellets which is good for burning once dried

  • @marsrover001
    @marsrover001 4 ปีที่แล้ว +56

    Start with sawdust. And the pulp needs to be pressed while drying. I'd try starch as a binder.

      It needs boiling in lye to remove lignin, it needs fabric fibres, and it needs bleaching, then it can finally be pressed.

    Yesterday I read that the stores will have pallets-full within a few days, if they don't already.
    I remember when I was a school kid, getting stuck in a stall that was out of TP. I took a couple pieces of my notebook paper and rolled them between my hands until they were soft, tore them into smaller squares, and got by.

    You need a binder like white glue or paste. Also just leave the paper to dry on the screen and really squeeze a lot of the water out of it. I used to make paper from old paper that I didn't want any more and added dryer lint to it. I used the paper as paper, like to print photographs on or make a part of a book. Not to wipe with. Good luck with your quest of toilet paper, conversely you could just use a "personal cloth" and the three bucket method if you want to make TP. Cheers.

    Wood chips are cooked in a digester with white liquor (mainly sodium hydroxide) then it’s goes through a series bleaching and screening. You’d want the chips to be longer strains not minced. So the fibers can link together and be stronger.

    Wood pulp for paper making is soaked for a long time even before it is shredded, plus as someone else said maybe some kind of binder like starch would help.

    I don't think it was a total fail. I think it was interesting and showed us what happens if you try this. Now we know what doesn't work. It's like any invention... one person makes an attempt, then someone else tries again, and then eventually someone will come up with something that works. Trial and error. Good idea though! Makes me think of what else could be done.

    Take your pulp and mix about a pint of that with a gallon or two of warm water. Add a few tablespoons of wood glue or white glue. Stir it up. Then take a wire coat hanger, bend it into a square and tightly wrap a set of pantyhose over the square like a screen. Dip it into the slurry and remove it. Let it dry and you’ll have a sheet of paper on each side.
