My favorite Rush album is "Fly by night" from 1974. RUSH has been my fav ever since. Yes I'm old (54). It fills my heart with so much joy to see younger generations listening to and enjoying the classics.

Geddy and Alex write the music to go with Neil's lyrics. No one ever mentions the writing of the music! They could have written for movies, video games or musical theatre! Thanks for mentioning their masterful ability to compose and arrange. Rush fan from day one, 48 years ago. Although Peart wasn't with them yet, I knew these guys had that " something " that made the music stand out to me! I was mostly alone in my love of their songs after Neil joined the band. Their first album had John Rutsy ( not sure of spelling on his last name ) and was very Led Zeppy, BUT, then came Peart and the rest is HISTORICAL!

Neil Peart (RIP) was indeed the main lyricist for the band, and is credited for writing the lyrics to this song.

Peart and Lee are extremely smart, very well read, always give well thought-out answers in an interview. Lots of world experiences and very self-aware.
Lifeson is more like the class clown, good sense of humor, good natured. However, you get him talking about his guitars, his other equipment and the music he’s written, he’s every bit a genius as the other 2 guys.

Yes, Neil wrote probably 95% of the lyrics after coming to the band. And the whole "Rash" thing was the t-shirt Geddy wore during the "Time Machine" tour.

One of my favourite Rush songs!
I saw an interview with them and they wrote this song in two to three days! 🤯
Neil was the main lyrist and he wrote this song as he did most.
Neil once described drumming for Rush was like running a marathon and doing mathematical equations at the same time.
I suggest The Fountain of Lamneth and you should see a live performance.
    Working man live in Cleveland
You guys did this song way back and you should see how they revise it in their later years.
    More Rush please!
    Cheers

Give Jacob’s Ladder a listen from the same album. This album is my favorite. Freewill might have their best one minute of jam in all their songs. That 4th minute is epic from 3:01 to around 4:00.

I know Neil could not have known it at the time, but " living in their pools, they soon forget about the sea" might now mean people sitting on their smart phones oblivious to everything, like zombies. The later lyrics, "science, like nature, must also be tamed" give you food for thought.

But it always amazes me to think Neil just writing.. reading.. writing.. reading. non stop, while playing the most amazing drums we’ve ever heard. And then pass a lyric page to Geddy and Alex and they create the whole song. incredible.

  • @greg5510
    @greg5510 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Natural Science was Alex Lifeson's favourite song to play live. Neil Peart was nicknamed "the" Professor by Geddy and Alex. Alex and Neil called Geddy "Maestro" and, yes, these were some very bright boys. I once read a critic's review which identified their music as "thinking man's heavy metal". They amused other touring bands by foregoing postshow parties to play chess in their dressing rooms. Neil was an avid reader, always with a book on the go. He was waaay into science fiction, which deeply informed his lyrics (2112, Red Barchetta, etc). As a kid too smart for the jocks and too athletic for the brains, I gravitated toward Rush, naturally, as they displayed the same dichotomy.
I like a lot of music, but Rush is the band I truly love.

to add to your comments on the end about not getting to the part where AI or something (our own creation) brings ourselves to an end. I think Neil alludes to that with "Wave after wave will flow with the tide, And bury the world as it does, Tide after tide will flow and recede, Leaving life to go on as it was." Whichever level of 'society' you are talking about - be it the tidal pools or our cities, or the Jurassic period, tides will flow and recede (extinction events), but life will always manage to go on. I don't think he means human life necessarily. To add to this, when the song comes in with the ocean, there are many birds singing. In the out-ro, the birds are gone.

  • @bobkitten8150

Apologies if someone already shared this trivia. I skimmed a lot but not all comments. The album was recorded at Le Studio, Morin Heights, Quebec in the Laurentian Mountains. The studio was also near a small lake. Geddy's vocals were run through an amp outdoors and the natural echo off the mountains was recorded. The splashing sounds were made by Alex and Neil who were drawing oars through the waters of the lake.

My favorite Neil breakdown at 8:20 (which is saying ALOT). It just propels you into the next section of the song. If you think about it (and Neil assuredly did!), Our Galaxy is just a tidal pool that spun off from The Big Bang, and living in the pools, we soon forget about the sea. The permanent waves are echoed by the retraction of the GalaxE and then the next Big Bang ad infinitum! We come and go but are inevitably inconsequential…wheels within wheels…in a spiral array…is also our DNA. Plenty to explore here! Cheers!

Don’t forget. They were stoned when they played and wrote this music. The reason why we elevate them is because they were on another plane when the wrote it. Their minds expanded and when we listen to this, even 40 years later, we are there with them. Take that and add that their inimitable talent and you get the greatest most unique and expressive band in music history.

THAT, my friends, is how you close an album. Arguably, Rush's greatest album closer of all time (Some will advocate for The Garden, but this is my all time favorite.) All three of them are banging on point from start to finish. I like how you picked up on the familiarity of the Permanent Waves section name, also the name of the 1980 album on which Natural Science is the final track. Absolutely brilliant and loved seeing you hear and enjoy it for the first time as I did back in 1980 when I bought the vinyl as soon as it came out. Such a killer song live in concert; check out the numerous live versions on TH-cam to see them play this challenging song.

You might be ready for Cygnus. Please do them together. It's a long listen but they mesh together and you'll be glad you did. Cheers guys. Appreciate all you do.

yes. please. this is a how a RUSK geek listens to it at home. take a rip and play the last of one album, and quickly change to the next to get the full story. and back in the day, ( way back), you would have the lyrics on the inside sheets that covered the vinyl. just sit…. listen….read… and forever be changed.
