Not ending supercards with the biggest match was pretty common back in the day actually. Infact, the infamous Kerry Von Erich vs Ric Flair NWA Title match where Kerry was replacing his recently deceased brother David didn't close that show that was a near record attendance at that time. It's looked at as one of the most famous matches in pro wrestling history with Kerry defeating Flair to become champion in honor of David Von Erich & there was one more match after it that closed that show. A mixed tag team match in case you were curious lol

Greg Gagne swears up and down that it wasn't their job to pay Jerry Lawler because ahead of the show it was agreed that each company would pay their guys. Well, I think I can see the thinking behind this particular match. It was a mixed tag match after all. So women can only wrestle women, and men can only wrestle men. This case the champions are not tagging themselves in but rather they are forced to tag in.

Why was this show held in Chicago?! I get that the AWA was based in the Great Lakes region, but they’d have drawn WAY more attendees if it’d been held in Memphis, Louisville, KY (where the CWA had hosted cards for years prior), or Dallas-Fort Worth. It’s almost as if they *wanted* to fail!

As a child of the 1980's who grew up right outside Minneapolis, the AWA was the first promotion I ever saw and for a few years, even knew existed. It's a shame what happened to them and I draw a lot of similar parallels to ROH. Just 4 years before this show the AWA was selling out arenas AND the building next door with closed circuit events. But the times changed and Verne was unable to recognize talent and capitalize and instead let them go to the competition who took and made a fortune with them. Just like ROH who had their own staff out draw them on a bet and then Joe Koff never asked himself, "why did my 3 talents just do what I've never been able to do?" Like Verne, he essentially let them go to the competition and now they are flourishing and ROH may never return. You can only shit on you customers for so long. At some point they are going to stop coming.

By way of comparison, NWA hosted starrcade at the norfolk scope with an attandance of 10,000 and was headlined by ric flair successfully defending his NWA title over lex luger. WWE hosted survivor series at the richfield colisieum (at that time the home of the cleveland Cavaliers of the NBA) drew 13,500 at was headlined by the team of hulk hogan, randy savage, hercules, hillbilly jim, and koko b ware defeating the team of akeem (one man gang), big bossman, red rooster (terry taylor), haku and ted diabiase (hogan and savage were the sole survivors).

I appluad the companies involved for coming together and trying to put on a good product but the fact they booked a 10k+ seat arena and only had 1600 in attendance shows me they were out of touch with their market share. I think if AWA teamed up with JCP/WCW they could have given WWF some serious competition, but that would also require AWA not to have their top stars being an old man 20 years past his prime.
