I was 12 years old in 1977 when 'Roots' originally aired. It was a tremendous history lesson that I've never forgotten. I've had 'Roots' on dvd for many years now, and I still enjoy watching it at my discretion. In my view, this was TV at it's best. The actors, their performances, and the plot was excellent and has stood the test of time. Today's tv pales in comparison to programs such as 'Roots' (and 'North and South', both of which were produced by the late great David L. Wolper).
One of the best movies ever made. It was about the brutality humans can do to one another and yet how humans can overcome and survive. it is a lesson for every person, every race and time.
why re-make this wonderful series. It could never be as good as the original nor the actors that played the roles. I watched it as a child and I am watching it again as a 50 year old,, and still has the same impact. Don't ruin these epic series and movies by re making them. like Little house on the Praire, nobody could play those parts only the original cast. Don't ruin a good thing. Lets keep the memories real x
Levar was also in Star Trek TNG and several Star Trek films. Louis was in An Officer and a Gentleman and WON the Academy Award for best Supporting Actor Amos was in Coming to America
I was 10 years old when roots came out we watched every night I didn't know quite what was going on with the movie at that age but as an adult I appreciate David L. Wolper production that gave us insight of how it was in the days of slavery through Alex Haley family I suppose that I appreciate it more as a genealogist Thank You Alex Haley and David L. Wolper for an inspiring production.
I watched all 15hrs of Roots this wknd... I learned so much smh! Black ppl came along way!!! I wished we could love on another.... At the end of the day we all are the same bleed blood breath air!
BTW @ 5:03 its says the real Chicken George Moore but it should be Chicken George Lea cuz the name moore was only for the mini-series in the book, the master is called Tom Lea.
I was only 12 years old in 1977. While the story lines in 'Roots' were fiction, the characters and their plight was indeed historic. I stand by my aforementioned comments on Roots.
@dakboyyall I remember that in that scene, Missy Anne kind of reared back when she heard Kizzy's name and then said she didn't know her, which led me to think that she was lying. It can't be easy to face the person you betrayed and abandoned so long ago.
You had to 'read between the lines' on several things in Roots, including this brief scene. Although many decades had gone by, it was clear that Missy Anne was lying and ashamed when she denied remembering Kizzy. Nobody forgets a close childhood friend. Missy Anne failed to intervene and prevent her Uncle from selling Kizzy since she forged a pass for another slave. By the standards of the day, Kizzy was a 'ruined' slave, tantamount to a horse with a broken leg.
Stop moaning about the cast and how they look. it was the 70's. The point is the story behind it all and bringing it to the forefront., it's reality and history. it was fantastic acting and showed how black people were treated and bought into salvery
that music always gives me the power lmao also Tracey Morgan looks like omoro but omoro is handsome and Tracey Morgan isn't i dunno how that is but it just is Lol
One of my classmates (now a college professor) was seven year old when this came out and she didn't like it. She was afraid of what her white classmates would say to her the next day if they saw a movie about African Americans in chains. The movie "Good Fences" also has a subplot about Roots, and how it aired some things that the family wants buried.
greatist film, t.v. series of its time and still stands up now would love to see a remake not that im lover of remakes but i bet thay could do a hell of job now and "roots" may or may not have been a fictional story if it was then i bet it mirriored real life avents, god bless Alex Haley for opening our eyes but lets try to remember "you can not put the sins of the great great grandfathers on to the great great grandsons" cambbolongo and nangadeaf my roots loving friends.
The flaw in your clips is that you always forget to put the full name of the actor. Never assume that the audience knows who you're talking about. Just like everyone knows who the president is. But the first mention of him, they say "President Barack Obama".
+Derrick Threex You are right, of course. And difficult is it to look up the actors' names on IMDB, not to mention ask someone with better English abilities to proof what one puts online.
At 5:04, there's a photo shown of the so called "real" Chicken George Moore. There is no record of an actual person named Chicken George Moore ever existing. He was a fictional character in the novel Roots, so I don't know where the person who posted this video gets their information from. Of course, I could be wrong, but I could find no person named Chicken George Moore that fits the description of the man in the photo shown.
I saw a video with a white guy visiting chicken George's burial and it had that exact picture on the headstone..he's buried next to people who were in the movie
yo that missy anne reynolds was kizzies best friend but l8r she told kizzy i dont recollect knowing any black girl by the name of kizzy when kizzy gave her a cup of water, do u no if she was lying when she said that or if she really did not remember.
WE ALL WANT TO BE FREE! AND WERE ALL NOT, AND THATS VERY UNFORTUNE IN 2013, WERE STILL ALL NOT FREE! AND NO BODY IS NO BODY SLAVE! NOBODY! ROOTS IS A GREAT MOVIE AND A GREAT ACCOUNT OF WHAT TOOK PLACE BACK THIN! AND ITS ONE OF MY FAVORATE MOVIES OF ALL TIME! I WOULD LOVE TOO TRACE BACK MY FAMILYS TREE! TOO! I LOVE TH-cam VERY MUCH TH-cam IS VERY EDUCATIONAL, ENTERTAINTIING, FUNNY, OUT RAGEOUS, AT TIMES, BUT! MUST OF ALL, ITS VERY INFORMOTIVE.
You honestly believe, hypothetically, that he or she would be moved in a remorseful way ? They'd probably seek and gain humor from it. The only way to make an "ole racist" "FEEL" anything in comparison, is to actually ADMINISTER what our ancestors went through ie. a flogging ! Then ask how it feels. :-) Good Day

RIP Cicely Tyson 🙏🏽🕊
ルーツの俳優の人たちは、皆、綺麗で、賢そうな方たちが、多いですね❗昔の映画は、美男美女が、本当に多かったです。

John Amos has one of those ''don't fuck with me faces'' at times. He's no doubt a pleasant enough fellow off screen.
thefrecklepuny That's anybody now days, people been through so much to take bull crap.
Thank you very much, Roots was my favorited TVdrama at that time.
Wish a happy christmas for you☆

This hits different as of now, cos most are gone.
I watched all 15hrs of Roots this wknd... I learned so much smh! Black ppl came along way!!! I wished we could love on another.... At the end of the day we all are the same bleed blood breath air!
Richard Roundtree passed away on October 24, 2023.

I would have liked if you put the last name of the people.

Awesome theme music though...
i do really like this tv series , cuz its really fantastic
Omg I knew I seen Sandy Duncan somewhere!!!!! She was on the original Barney!
Ich habe diesen Film geliebt
Whoever made this vid forgot to put the actors' REAL names next to the characters that they played. Otherwise a very good vid.
My mistake Richard Roundtree is alive and well sorry found out that he is a cancer survivor God Bless Him
Never thought Mr. Brady of the Brady Bunch could play a role like that. That messed me up. And Sandy got a lot of backlash after playing her role.
So truly I hated mr Brady after that lol but got over it
This needs upgrading unfortunately because , Cisiley Tyson died in 2021 at the age of 94

Indeed
Good point and well said

Not all off Roots was fiction. The part about his family lineage is true.

+Derrick Threex Yes thanks for posting but don't know the names of all the actors.
+Derrick Threex You are right, of course. And difficult is it to look up the actors' names on IMDB, not to mention ask someone with better English abilities to proof what one puts online.
The rifleman loved that black poon tang!!!!
Film magnifique et acteurs remarquables qui fait ressortir toutes ces horreurs de l esclavage quand je pense qu ils portaient le nom de leurs maîtres
What about Doug McClure (Jemmy Brent)?
7:08 I didn't know Morgan Freeman was in Roots.
At 5:04, there's a photo shown of the so called "real" Chicken George Moore. There is no record of an actual person named Chicken George Moore ever existing. I think this picture is in the alex haley museum in Henning, Tennessee
I saw a video with a white guy visiting chicken George's burial and it had that exact picture on the headstone..he's buried next to people who were in the movie
Can we Ben Vereen didn't appear in The Next Generation & some other actors\actresses ie Elizabeth's sister as a pentioner

LaVar Burton Star Trek TNG +various films ?
they killed my mother with medical errors
Meant to say explain
Alex Haley was a liar who stole a story called The African and ended up having to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to the original writer.
Interesting no mention of Labar Verton & Star Trek
What no mention of O.J Simpson, we know where he is now
OJ got revenge for Kunta Kenta😁
I believe that Richard Roundtree died if I'm not correct in 2010 or 2012
Terrible grammar. RIP Olivia Cole.
If homosexuality is not wrong why hide it you don’t you don’t hide what’s right
