This video is a huge example of why I no longer play MMOs. I can't imagine having played a game/invested my free time for hundreds of hours only to have my fun destroyed by a few trolls.
Ah man, well, speaking on the subject: I was 25, working 16 hours a day, five days a week. So to quit the hyperbole and so I don't blow an artery years later, I can sum this up. I purchased a 2400$ a month rent building to try and start a computer repair business, this was around 2004. A nice midsized building, in a good neighborhood, with plenty of office buildings. And plenty of people who were going to need someone to fix their Windows XP machines, which I was elated to do. I paid the rent, moved my equipment into it, a nice sofa, and a few furnishings. In total, after years of skimping and saving, I spent 18 grand to get it up and running. I was grateful, business was starting to turn a profit, to the point I was going to hire some staff, as I was the only one working on up to 40 systems a day. Yes, 40- FORTY personal and business computers a day. I lock the doors one day, around midnight, go home to sleep to 7AM, and then return to work... Only there was no work to return to. The building collapsed, trigging the pipes to burst, only six PC's survived. How? The buildings code was up to date, and all in all everything was good. Except the rental agent who sold the building to me, fabricated the papers, took the deposit, plus the rent, and did so to twelve other individuals. The building had been flooded and rebuilt, and also had been infested with termites, which I was never informed of, of course. He had been fired from the agency he worked at for being a thief, and was using their name fraudulently to appear he was legit. The agency filed suit against him, me and the other twelve also filed against him. Problem is, he was also a severe substance abuse user. Found dead nine days later, having gone on a bender and spent all but 3500$ of the funds he had left. Over 600K spent on various substances and adult pastimes :/ Insurance gave me 5000$ for the damages. And not a cent more. In total, I gave him 12 grand and the others gave him a ton too. And I estimate in a nine day span, he spent close to between 450$ to 500$ thousand dollars. Keep in mind, this was 2004 money. Betrayal? Yep, and sheer stupidity on my part too. Thing is, I did look his name up, and the rental agency site did have him on their page, which they admitted they had not taken him down yet. He owed back child support in the millions, had eight children, and shot and snorted it all away in nine days. I think I betrayed my own personal sanity that day, and you know what? I still never got that back either. Cheers and toodles noodles.
There was a shocking one abbout ten years ago in Elite Dangerous. Some guy did the longest deep space mission in the game's history to date, spending months of real time journeying to the centre of the galaxy and through to the far side, then back again. When he was close to home, a bunch of other players formed up a kind of honour guard to welcome him home, and one of them, with no warning, blew him up. Because of how the game works, you have to dock at a station and sell your exploration data, and if you're destroyed before selling it it's lost when your ship's computer is lost. This guy lost months and months of data because some troll decided to gank him.

I’m a huge Squaresoft fan, and I remember them switching to Sony. It was announced before the N64 was released though, so you’d have to pay no attention to gaming at all back then to pick up a 64 and expect it to have Square games.
Yes, I remember being surprised and disappointed when Squaresoft left Nintendo and ff7 released on the PS1. I had a N64 and was really happy with Mario 64. I saw the screen shots of FF6 characters in 3D and got really excited. Then I saw FF7 and was blown away with how good it looked. It also made JRPGs mainstream and whereas before no one in my school had heard of Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger etc, after FF7 everyone was talking about it. I saved up and got a PS1 as soon as possible.
Like square enix buying eidos and then essentially killing the soul reaver/legacy of kain series? Even enforced unrealistic deadlines on the team working on the game soul reaver: dead sun (had nothing to do with Raziel or Kain but still looked pretty fun) just to cause the game to fail so the could chop off the parts they thought would be beneficial for their own ip's and then forced the devs who lost their jobs to sign nda's. Real shitty stuff man
I just want to add that WoW's Corrupted Blood outbreak happened in 2 phases. The one in the video is the 2nd phase. The first was a genuine bug, which Blizzard fixed by preventing the Corrupted Blood effect from leaving the Raid instance. However, it was after that that someone learned that dismissing their pet while they had the debuff, then summoning them again outside the instance would keep the debuff on them, thus allowing it to spread, again.
We had a story like this in our unreal tournament 2004 clan. There was one guy being a major jerk so my friend dueled him and the guy lost and immediately left the game and we didn't see him again. Several months later a new guy starts hanging around our server and he's nice and we start getting to know him like anyone else who had played with us and joined the clan over time. This dude joins the clan and we get along great until like a year later he revealed he was the guy we exiled from the clan previously. He never sabotaged us but it was crazy the long play this guy had gone to slowly regain our trust, get back in the clan, then make this grand reveal.
one of the major players on the Atlantic shard on Ultima Online passed away and they had a nice memorial for him and they even took over the house he had with rune books and still maintain it to this day.
When my mom decided "that I wasn't really using" my NES, and let "my dad's friends kids have it for a while"... It never came back. She did it again with my PS1 and gave it to my cousin across the country. She did terrible things like a lot (and no we weren't well off at all, we were lower middle class with a single mom.) Childhood trauma all around.
Number 10, after the “outbreak” there were actually studies done about how the plague spread through the game how certain people deliberately spread it and others worked to try to quarantine and help other players.
I just knew tiny violin was gonna be at the top of this list. that guy is a full on psychopath, not only did he gain their trust in wow, but he was playing games with some of the other guildies outside of wow
My understanding is the guy at the #1 spot also managed to do this to another guild in AQ40 when they got to C'thun. Got half the raid killed by the first eye beam that chains to nearby players. The Naxx 4HM was just him doing it a 2nd time on a new character.
I was a hardcore player from the early days of the grassroots community, and eventually a mod by the time Wrath launched (TerylBrat here, hi!). I will never forget that raid betrayal. Many of us had openly questioned their willingness to let him be part of the raid, much less a tank, and that's one huge reason why I never raided HC. It's too easy to troll and if I learned one thing as a kid watching X-Files, it's TRUST NO ONE. Doubly so with a hardcore character, lol. I was not remotely surprised to hear about the attempted wipe. It was heartbreaking to see, but not at all unexpected given the history of the streamers who were running and participated in the raid.
Please make a top 10 list about early 2000s action sports games and throw dark summit on there 🙏 the game just popped into my head for no reason, very unique and under the radar.
The number 1 betrayal is way deeper than people think. Normally people could have used a potion to go invulnerable and escape the raid. He chise the one fight where that couldn't and wouldn't work. It was very well thought up and executed.
That was a ton of fun! Would yall consider doing a list of the best moments from the Destiny series later in the year around the 10 year anniversary of Destiny's launch? Idk, like a compilation of Best worlds first raid moments, best story beats or epic moments from the live events to the final boss of the saga? There's potential there and I know if this channel did it it would be done pretty well ❤

As a freelance sound designer in the 90s, I was hired to chop up lines of dialog so they could be reused/assembled in software to save space on game cartridges- like, individual syllables. It took FOREVER and broke my brain. I do not miss it. So I get developers wanting to move to larger storage platforms.
Disco Elysium betrayal hits hard, man. It's even more of a bummer that you can't have nice new things. It reveals the nature of the world at this moment.
The report spam turning into an auto ban is what happened to my RBG (Rated Battleground) team (and many others) on a few expansions ago as a certain team would spam report every enemy team member's name until they'd be up against an empty team. Sadly Blizzard didn't end up doing anything about it, despite most accounts being reported risking a strike if they didn't contact support about it immediately to give their own version of the events. I provided video evidence from my team's perspective as well as the enemy team's perspective as they're spam reporting us while laughing on stream, yet sadly not much was done about it..
They made a giant public advertisement about the event, invited everyone on the server, and then decided to host it on a world PvP server. They did everything but actively beg for people to crash it. Hate this train of thought that the people who participated in the massive world PvP event this "funeral" caused are immoral monsters and should be hated. They did what the game actively allowed and encouraged them to do. People need to grow a thicker skin and/or learn not to intentionally invite disastrous turnouts like that.
Awesome list, Eve is not only treacherous but the politics are nuts. I only stopped playing after I developed seizures from different aspect ratios on my two monitors. there was a guild on the european server of aszune that also blocked other players from doing the gates of ahn'qiraj quest line they picked up the quest then refused to share it with anyone outside there guild, they even unlocked the gate in the middle of the night something like 4:00am from what I remember, my guild leader at the time knew someone in the other guild, and we got informed about the opening at 3:30am, I can't remember the guild name as they kind of imploded during the burning crusade expansion, but they were non too pleased when people from other guilds turned up to watch the opening.
"Insubordination" is what they say when they want to fire you, but the real reason they want to fire you is illegal. I've seen plenty of people get fired, but I've never seen someone get fired for actual insubordination, because when an employee gets to that point they generally just quit.
Let’s be honest, they probably told some big headed exec at activision “that’s not how you should run things” then the exec got all up in his ego and fired him.
"Zaum" (Заумь) is a term from Russian Futurist literature, coined by poets like Velimir Khlebnikov and Aleksei Kruchyonykh. It can be translated to "transrational" or "beyond the mind." Zaum refers to a form of experimental language that transcends logical meaning and rational thought, aiming to express more abstract or primal concepts. In German "Im Zaum halten" means "to keep in check". So it seems as if Russians heard that term and coined them as going beyond the check...so the exact opposite if what Zaum means in germany. German: stay inside of the border Russian: transgress the border
I remember an epic betrayal in Eve online or some other space game. Some guy was the leader of his faction but had to go on leave in Iraq. When he came back they didn't let him back in so he made a new faction and they fought a huge war.
Just to clear something up, Lord British was killed during Beta, so none of the people who "Lost all their stuff" would have had that stuff during launch anyway. They had lost all their stuff multiple times anyway, because it was beta.
Having lived through all the eras of gaming, I can honestly say I don’t think ANYONE bought a N64 because they thought the next Final Fantasy would be on it.
So, having seen some of these externally weird things from the inside where it can make more sense (it doesnt always), the big thing to keep in mind is that Companies dont make decisions, dont have grudges, etc, people do. So, that will sometimes explain seemingly irrational or otherwise counterintuitive actions by companies.
Not sure if it would count, but there's also the possible betrayal in the Skullgirls development team. It's tangled web, but word has it that the main lead developer was accused of harassment (whether falsely or not) by members of his company and was forced out.
The Corrupted Blood started as an accident. It was further spread on purpose. A Hunter dismissed his pet to save its life. He took that pet back out in a capital city thinking the debuff would be long gone.
Small correction, Respawn Entertainment wasn't founded under EA, they started Respawn in 2010, they got EA to publish both Titanfalls and of these games success EA acquired Respawn in 2017.
I was there that day in Winterspring, I wasn't in either guild I was levelling my first character and saw the carnage going on and had no idea what it all was and only saw the video later. Legendary.
The fact that WoW held so many positions on this list is the reason i quit at level 23 and never picked it up again. I have never seen such a toxic community in any other MMO.

EVE real name is "Backstabbing On Line". Things that in other name are capital crimes in EVE are just Tuesday
@@signorellil I sorta realized the real gameplay loop is just straight up corporate espionage/sabotage.
It has 2 entries on the list.
lol thanks for watching :) Maybe we’ll come back with a part 2.
@@gameranxTV part 2 'EVE Online Edition'
Love the long videos 😊. Thanks gameranx
Lol "pinched a loaf of on the conference room table" killed me IRL. I'm dead now.
The biggest betrayal is the one Ubisoft gave us. Went from the most versatile and one of the best to one of the worst
Bethesda is right behind them!
This video is a huge example of why I no longer play MMOs. I can't imagine having played a game/invested my free time for hundreds of hours only to have my fun destroyed by a few trolls.
Ah man, well, speaking on the subject:
I was 25, working 16 hours a day, five days a week.
Over 600K spent on various substances and adult pastimes :/
Insurance gave me 5000$ for the damages.
Hey, Falcon! I am loving these thirty minute-ish videos. Makes my day.
Hey! Thanks we appreciate you watching :)
What's even more interesting is #8. The WOW incident became a scientific case study viruses spreading.
Thanks for watching :)
@TheFilipinapea, thank you so much for sharing. I’ve never commented before on TH-cam but you channel has changed my life and informed me so much about the Philippines that I am actually considering a visit in the future. Thank you so much and know what you do is appreciated.
I’m a huge Squaresoft fan, and I remember them switching to Sony. It was announced before the N64 was released though, so you’d have to pay no attention to gaming at all back then to pick up a 64 and expect it to have Square games.
I don’t need to watch the video to know that Eric Sparrow acting like he did that McTwist in Hawaii is #1
Yes, I remember being surprised and disappointed when Squaresoft left Nintendo and ff7 released on the PS1.
Biggest betrayal out of all of these is these big gaming studios refusing to do anything with beloved IPs and just sitting on them forever.
"It's my IP to sit on and do nothing with!"
-CEO, Smiling Friends
That Covid joke🤣🤣🤣 funny and still informative love this channel keep it up guys
"...and then we booted him again." 😂
one of the major players on the Atlantic shard on Ultima Online passed away and they had a nice memorial for him and they even took over the house he had with rune books and still maintain it to this day.
5:48 - "Fallouts" 😐
Best video in a long time. Thank you Falcon. Thank you Gameranx team. Not Jake though.
Everyone else. Your work is much loved on a daily basis. ❤
Why not Jake?
Number 10, after the “outbreak” there were actually studies done about how the plague spread through the game how certain people deliberately spread it and others worked to try to quarantine and help other players.
I just knew tiny violin was gonna be at the top of this list. that guy is a full on psychopath, not only did he gain their trust in wow, but he was playing games with some of the other guildies outside of wow
10:07 - Hey Birdman, check the chat log !!!!!!!!! Kids may be watching this! haha
My understanding is the guy at the #1 spot also managed to do this to another guild in AQ40 when they got to C'thun. Got half the raid killed by the first eye beam that chains to nearby players. The Naxx 4HM was just him doing it a 2nd time on a new character.
All of this drama is why I’ve abandoned my guild of over 500 members in WOW back in 2009. And why I no longer play online MMOs.
WOW has had so many betrayals is insane lmao.
Another 30 minute Falcon video.. 😮💨🔥🙏🏻
Falcon! Awesome video and great stories. I had no idea about Disco Elysium.
There's potential there and I know if this channel did it it would be done pretty well ❤
“Dropped trow & pinched a loaf off” is a phrase that I will now be using every day, thank you.
Loving the subject matters of the last handful of videos. It’s great to be entertained whilst also learning a lot about the “lore” and history of the gaming industry. More of the same please. 😊
Loving the longer videos.
Whenever I think of video game betrayals, Donkey Kong and a fist full of quarters immediately pops in my head
8:38 I remember when the news broke, they were escorted out of the offices by security and people were freaking out.
Oh man! Rune brings back memories! I never knew what happened to those guys. Crazy.
If you spend enough in a video game that a felony amount of value can be stolen from you with no recourse, you probably deserve to lose it.
Man, I remember when each of the EVE Online and World Of Warcraft betrayals happened. Ahhh... memories...
Big up, Falcon. You are one of my favorite TH-camrs.
I would never play the game again.
A video on Betrayals and that too list of 13. I am sensing something here.
these stories are awesome! we need a sequel video!
NUMBER 11 was actually insane in real life. COD was never the same
It’s always a good day when I hear this luscious bird voice
I'll be honest. I did NOT have "drop trou" and "pinch a loaf" as possible quote choices on my Gameranx Bingo card.
lol $20k for some pixels. they should've made Eve online a NFT game
They essentially did long before NFTs were a full thing.
You pay 60$ for pixels. The precedent exists.
I dig it. Hey Falcon!
Hey
New boss named "Hacker," huh?
#13, damn. That's genuinely disgusting.. and it's just the start of the list. This will be a wild ride.
Even after I corrected the problem the spreadsheets would cause me seizures/panic attacks. I want to try again but my family, especially the kids, forbids it.
man, that Ultima Online entry is wild
The goats posted again. Y’all should do a ByB for Nine Sols :). Keep being awesome!
Hey thanks we appreciate you! :)
Your videos are always good but this week’s have been hitting different.
10:18 God I love falcon 😭😭😭😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 that coughing fit was hilarious
Oh, Falcon, you are fucking crushing it bro. You seem so much more comfortable in your narrations. I'm lovin' it. 🤙
there was a guild on the european server of aszune that also blocked other players from doing the gates of ahn'qiraj quest line they picked up the quest then refused to share it with anyone outside there guild, they even unlocked the gate in the middle of the night something like 4:00am from what I remember, my guild leader at the time knew someone in the other guild, and we got informed about the opening at 3:30am, I can't remember the guild name as they kind of imploded during the burning crusade expansion, but they were non too pleased when people from other guilds turned up to watch the opening.
German: stay inside of the border
Russian: transgress the border
I remember an epic betrayal in Eve online or some other space game. Some guy was the leader of his faction but had to go on leave in Iraq. When he came back they didn't let him back in so he made a new faction and they fought a huge war.
Just to clear something up, Lord British was killed during Beta, so none of the people who "Lost all their stuff" would have had that stuff during launch anyway. They had lost all their stuff multiple times anyway, because it was beta.
19:47 "-either way. Either way-"
Having lived through all the eras of gaming, I can honestly say I don’t think ANYONE bought a N64 because they thought the next Final Fantasy would be on it.
Worst betrayal ever is Silent Hills being canceled and PT taken down. RIP Norman Reedus' character in the game 😭
Small correction, Respawn Entertainment wasn't founded under EA, they started Respawn in 2010, they got EA to publish both Titanfalls and of these games success EA acquired Respawn in 2017.
Appreciate all the world of Warcraft content man!
case 1 is a perfect case of "just because you can doesn't mean you should"
I was there that day in Winterspring, I wasn't in either guild I was levelling my first character and saw the carnage going on and had no idea what it all was and only saw the video later. Legendary.
The obnoxious covid coughing killed me it was so funny 😆🤣😂😅
This list made me look back on all the epic moments in WoW....i miss what it was.... haven't played since 2012, won't ever play again... good times.
The fact that WoW held so many positions on this list is the reason i quit at level 23 and never picked it up again. I have never seen such a toxic community in any other MMO.
