I was in one today loved it its sumething else. Unbelievable the way it goes around bends plus carbon ceramic La Ferrari brakes, the g forces where to the point that almost made me sick, big respect for the 488 gtb. What an amazing Beast love it

I mean but it's like saying why wasn't the new NSX in the running instead of some of the lower tier cars, well it would be explained similarly to the 911 and new GT. Though to a lesser extent. But I'm sure they could've gotten any car they wanted for this. I wonder if they will ever post like a top 100 list that they pick out cars from.
You guys did a really good job with the Best Driver's car competition when Johnny and Jason drove all the cars and explained how they did on the road last year. This year however, you guys barely spoke about or discussed how good the car was on a back road. It seems like this year it was mostly about lap time. I hope this great competition will be better next year.
The 488 has received such bad press because the turbo's etc yet whenever it goes to a track everyone is astounded at it's chassis, it is almost witchcraft what Ferrari are doing these days. There's the whole 'you cant trust a Ferrari press car' bla bla .... grow up all of you and just enjoy the cars and the content. It's a great era for drivers cars and our days are numbered by tree huggers and bureaucrats so lets celebrate all these great cars while we can!

I think it's actually a matter of what fast car can we get for free from manufacturers to test them in this week of the year? If McLaren doesn't have a 720s to send them, and Ferrari provides them with the 488, I think they take it and test it.
I seriously doubt that this car was on the same tires that you buy it at the dealer. Autocar wrote an article recently about how they're retracting their test times because the car was on Sport Cup 2 tires and not only are they not a dealer option, Ferrari themselves said they will not spec a car with those tires even if you ask. The car comes with Pilot Sport 4 S tires.

Someone needs to explain this to me. From reading the articles to watching the videos, I get the impression the Turbo S should be the BDC, and the 488 should be somewhere 2 to 4. How?
The Turbo S is not a drivers car. Its just a numbers car. It's very fast and very well engineered but doesn't give the driver much feedback. You cant spec it with a manual, you have electric steering, AWD and it sounds like a vacuum cleaner. Not what you want in a drivers car.
Absolutely. Porsche 911 does what the ferrari does only a little bit better and does it at all times and in all seasons. It costs considerably less and is of higher quality. Porsche makes a 500hp Gt3 for people who like RWD and more track focused machine. I sometimes dont know what these people are talking about. Salomondrin recently ran a ferrari 488 against huracan and 675LT and the times were dangerously close. This ferrari can not possibly be faster than a 911 turbo on laguna seca. Porsche puts its power down much better than the ferrari.
It definitely sounds like a vacuum cleaner. It doesn't matter how loud it is (not loud at all compared to other cars in its class) Theres no emotion from that sound. No 911 howl which made the car legendary in the first place.
They don't list it...as it was done NOT by Motor trend...but by Randy driving for SRT/Dodge. They only list times Randy did when working for MT. Smoke and mirrors like the fake times at the RING for most cars. They don't show the track record lap the last ACR did either...when driven by the SRT engineer. OLD 600hp ACR did a 1:33.92 lap....but didn't have traction control.
So complains the brakes take too much effort, Steering takes too much effort, Can't change gear with the paddles and has to use stability control yet it is the best drivers car.......
I was confused about this as well. The professional motorsports driver, Randy, and therefore the most skilled among them found a bit of difficulty or issue with the brakes, had trouble with the steering and the changing of gears and had to compensate by totally changing his driving style. And yet it is the best DRIVER"S car.

F12 is not a performance car. When Ferrari agrees to send cars for performance tests, they send cars like the 458 and 488 -- and their press cars are always tuned way beyond their stock performance.

488 is really underrated. Everyone shit on it because of the sound, but that's only because it had to live up to the 458 (which is a very difficult task)
Correction: the current lap record holder at Laguna Seca is the Viper ACR, NOT the 918. The ACR ran a 1:28.65, the 918 ran a 1:29.89. Enough with the fake news 🇺🇸🐍
You're not the only one. The Miata (and maybe the Camaro), are the only two cars most of us could afford. Price should play a factor into the best drivers car.
Yeah. I appreciated the inclusion of the Miata and camaro (even if most people will only be able to afford the SS 1le), but the next most attainable car is the freaking corvette and cayman. The hell man. I liked the runners up for last year because at least we can afford those ones, or at least the 86, RS, fiata, and v6 camaro.
I think subjective rating independent of price is super important. I want to know exactly how each car feels and which people enjoy more. It's super easy to judge the valve myself based on the results and the prices. It's not like there is really anything at stake with finishing order, it's just a ranking. Who cares if expensive cars win, I expect them to win, they cost more. I want to know if they are worth it because often they are not. The fact that the 718 came in second is a good example of highlighting just how good that car is even compared to more expensive and more powerful options. Now if only it sounded better.
I kind of feel without a Huracan Performante and a McLaren 720S to name a few, this whole thing was kind of pointless. Also you can never really trust a Ferrari press car so there's that.

Yeah they did. On the Motor Trend website Ferrari set a lap time then whilst waiting for the Nismo to arrive, Ferrari asked (among other manufacturers) to tune the car and set another lap time. They improved by over a second which raised some suspicions that they did a bit more than what they said. Motor Trend have already named it the winner of the 2017 Best Driver's Car.
All cars were sent by the manufacturers. Some had technical support on the track, in order to achieve the perfect lap. I don't see anything wrong here. The Nismo had to be sent to a local dealer to be fixed by a "fleet of engineers" though.
Except that Ferrari won't allow you to do an independent test if you don't let them tune the car for the track. If you do get a Ferrari without their permission and test it on your own, not only you can get blacklisted from Ferrari, the owner of the car that lent it to you will also be barred from purchasing any more Ferraris from their official dealers. Yeah, it shows that they really care.
The other manufacturers are free to send their technicians also. i say it is complacency on their side. Why always call foul on Ferrari? They have every right to protect their interest, if rivals dont like it they can send their techs or shut up!
This is the First Street model that DOES perform well on the track. As for not fair...it costs alot more than most cars MT tested here...so it shoudl do Well. It's not the fastest, actually down in 4th place in lap times, Only 1.32 sec faster than the AMG GT R/ 1.37s faster than the Z06. This 488GTB is still 3.03 sec SLOWER than the ACR Viper. I have NO doubt the Lambo performante will beat the 488 GTB on this track...Once MT testes it here.
For price then I think they should've brought in the 675 lt or atleast the 650s since they are direct competitors. I agree with you that it should be faster, but don't think it should be that much faster than the 2nd place car

I am so sorry, but it seems that Motor Trend got very happy because Ferrari decided to lend them a 488 so they rewarded them with the best car of the year award. It just so happens that in Car a Driver Lightning lap the AMG is a second faster over a longer lap, so I'd imagine that Ferrari mechanics were all over the 488 until the squeezed that lap time!
Car & driver doesn't use a Professional driver...so the time difference is the lack of skill in the driver...NOT the car. What you are really saying is that if you aren't a great driver...you'd be faster in the AMG.
Even though I believe that they do use a professional driver. What do you make of Nurburgring times, where AMG is 11 seconds quicker! And almost forgot, if they don’t use a professional driver, than is the same driver for both cars, in it?!
When the times are ran by magazines/independently tested at the RING...then they will matter. Almost every manufacturer that runs their is cheating. And the proof is when a car is ONLY fast there and Sucks everywhere else (Nissan GT-R is a Great example). The ring favors cars the are quick accelerating...allows them to make up for less than Ideal handling. Also USA spec. cars are very different from euro spec cars. People that are so HOOKED UP on Nurburgring times(don't live in the USA) should be on a German/UK car magazine site and NOT Motor trend. Motor trend only tested showroom stock/USA Spec cars.Sport auto was the only magazine I've heard of testing there. The Nismo GT-R is slower than ANY Model Viper and slower than the ZL-1 1LE in STOCK USA spec. which is just sad.

Yawn... first of all, it has been different drivers. 2nd of all, it has been 10,08 seconds, not a "full 11 seconds". Third of all, Nurburgring is different to Laguna Seca. Viper ACR holds the record at Laguna Seca, being over a second faster (1:28,65) than the Porsche 918 (1:29,89) yet it went 7:01,30 on the Nordschleife. Porsche 918 did it at 6:57. Why? Because its a different track, and a different driver.

Definitely felt like this year was really, really lacking in content. Used to have the hot laps but had the editor side as well and there were roundtable discussions at the finale and THEN we get the World's Greatest Drag Race. The old documentary format was way better and was what I looked forward all year from Motor Trend. Hope there's more content next year.

Not hating on your opinion, but you need to understand 1 thing. The people who buy these cars have "unlimited" money, so the multiple cars vs this ferrari isn't really an issue to them as they will already own multiple cars. The ferrari would be to them merely "just another car"
People who can afford supercars dont worry about the the service cost and gas mileage, and if you buy a unlimited production supercar and expect it to not depreciate its value, you are unfamiliar with how things work. And also in general, if you have to calculate the money you will spend on your car, you dont have enough money to own it. Simple.
What depreciation? Get a Spider and they're still all going over book. Go for a Cali T or something then yea you're gonna lose about 30 - 50k in the first year if you buy brand new. Service costs are included in a service pack & there's 7 years warranty on them... so actually the maintenance costs are pretty much the same as any other car sports car.
No they don't, I know a quite a few people that have worked real hard & got to a point in life and said "bucket list", they've saved and they buy the car they want. Yes they may have multiple cars in the sense that they have a daily or something but they certainly don't have "unlimited" money and it's certainly not a case of just another car. In most cases it's their absolute pride and joy. They drive them and they love them. Yes there's always the tools that have more money than sense i.e I once heard a guy - after he over took three cars and smashed all their windscreens and then his got smashed by someone else (roads weren't best quality), people were absolutely fuming as you can imagine - he goes oh I don't know what you're bothered about, I'll just get a new one in summer. He drove a Lambo Avio. He's the kind of toxic super car driver but in reality if you speak to most of the guys, they're pretty humble about it and they big big car guys that have finally got to where they wanna be in life!

XMidnight....the ACR has Kumho V720 tires...not Trofeo Rs. The McLaren P1 had Trefeo R's when it set it's 3rd place lap.

Well, the Porsche Turbo S has also been around for quite a while now. So has the DB11. Or the Alfa. Or the Cayman.

Someone needs to explain this to me. From reading the articles to watching the videos, I get the impression the Turbo S should be the BDC, and the 488 should be somewhere 2 to 4. How?
The Turbo S is not a drivers car. Its just a numbers car. It's very fast and very well engineered but doesn't give the driver much feedback. You cant spec it with a manual, you have electric steering, AWD and it sounds like a vacuum cleaner. Not what you want in a drivers car.

Absolutely. Porsche 911 does what the ferrari does only a little bit better and does it at all times and in all seasons. It costs considerably less and is of higher quality. Porsche makes a 500hp Gt3 for people who like RWD and more track focused machine. I sometimes dont know what these people are talking about. Salomondrin recently ran a ferrari 488 against huracan and 675LT and the times were dangerously close. This ferrari can not possibly be faster than a 911 turbo on laguna seca. Porsche puts its power down much better than the ferrari.
It definitely sounds like a vacuum cleaner. It doesn't matter how loud it is (not loud at all compared to other cars in its class) Theres no emotion from that sound. No 911 howl which made the car legendary in the first place.

Paul Jeitler yeah, it's like they forget, and unlike the other tracks the vipers laguna seca lap was actually set by randy as opposed to someone else.
They don't list it...as it was done NOT by Motor trend...but by Randy driving for SRT/Dodge. They only list times Randy did when working for MT. Smoke and mirrors like the fake times at the RING for most cars.
They don't show the track record lap the last ACR did either...when driven by the SRT engineer. OLD 600hp ACR did a 1:33.92 lap....but didn't have traction control.

I was confused about this as well. The professional motorsports driver, Randy, and therefore the most skilled among them found a bit of difficulty or issue with the brakes, had trouble with the steering and the changing of gears and had to compensate by totally changing his driving style. And yet it is the best DRIVER"S car.

F12 is not a performance car. When Ferrari agrees to send cars for performance tests, they send cars like the 458 and 488 -- and their press cars are always tuned way beyond their stock performance.

488 is really underrated. Everyone shit on it because of the sound, but that's only because it had to live up to the 458 (which is a very difficult task)

Correction: the current lap record holder at Laguna Seca is the Viper ACR, NOT the 918. The ACR ran a 1:28.65, the 918 ran a 1:29.89. Enough with the fake news 🇺🇸🐍

Yeah. I appreciated the inclusion of the Miata and camaro (even if most people will only be able to afford the SS 1le), but the next most attainable car is the freaking corvette and cayman. The hell man. I liked the runners up for last year because at least we can afford those ones, or at least the 86, RS, fiata, and v6 camaro.
I think subjective rating independent of price is super important. I want to know exactly how each car feels and which people enjoy more. It's super easy to judge the valve myself based on the results and the prices. It's not like there is really anything at stake with finishing order, it's just a ranking. Who cares if expensive cars win, I expect them to win, they cost more. I want to know if they are worth it because often they are not. The fact that the 718 came in second is a good example of highlighting just how good that car is even compared to more expensive and more powerful options. Now if only it sounded better.
But this is just the best. Not the best under some monetary value. They could always do that but I think that would lack a lot of luster.
I kind of feel without a Huracan Performante and a McLaren 720S to name a few, this whole thing was kind of pointless. Also you can never really trust a Ferrari press car so there's that.

Did Ferrari send a fleet of their engineers and mechanics to tune the car to be perfect for that racetrack, just like they do it for any other review or competition? I bet they did, and I bet Porsche, Mercedes, or GM didn't.
Yeah they did. On the Motor Trend website Ferrari set a lap time then whilst waiting for the Nismo to arrive, Ferrari asked (among other manufacturers) to tune the car and set another lap time. They improved by over a second which raised some suspicions that they did a bit more than what they said. Motor Trend have already named it the winner of the 2017 Best Driver's Car.

All cars were sent by the manufacturers. Some had technical support on the track, in order to achieve the perfect lap. I don't see anything wrong here. The Nismo had to be sent to a local dealer to be fixed by a "fleet of engineers" though.
Except that Ferrari won't allow you to do an independent test if you don't let them tune the car for the track. If you do get a Ferrari without their permission and test it on your own, not only you can get blacklisted from Ferrari, the owner of the car that lent it to you will also be barred from purchasing any more Ferraris from their official dealers.

It's not the fastest, actually down in 4th place in lap times, Only 1.32 sec faster than the AMG GT R/ 1.37s faster than the Z06.
This 488GTB is still 3.03 sec SLOWER than the ACR Viper. I have NO doubt the Lambo performante will beat the 488 GTB on this track...Once MT testes it here.
For price then I think they should've brought in the 675 lt or atleast the 650s since they are direct competitors. I agree with you that it should be faster, but don't think it should be that much faster than the 2nd place car

I am so sorry, but it seems that Motor Trend got very happy because Ferrari decided to lend them a 488 so they rewarded them with the best car of the year award. It just so happens that in Car a Driver Lightning lap the AMG is a second faster over a longer lap, so I'd imagine that Ferrari mechanics were all over the 488 until the squeezed that lap time!

When the times are ran by magazines/independently tested at the RING...then they will matter. Almost every manufacturer that runs their is cheating. And the proof is when a car is ONLY fast there and Sucks everywhere else (Nissan GT-R is a Great example).
The ring favors cars the are quick accelerating...allows them to make up for less than Ideal handling. Also USA spec. cars are very different from euro spec cars.
People that are so HOOKED UP on Nurburgring times(don't live in the USA) should be on a German/UK car magazine site and NOT Motor trend. Motor trend only tested showroom stock/USA Spec cars.Sport auto was the only magazine I've heard of testing there.

You can't trust a Ferrari review or lap times because they control those stuff and don't like their cars coming in anything but 1st place. Kinda makes no sense that this is first place because the 488 is a full 11 seconds slower than the AMG Gt-R in the Nurburgring. Where's the Lamborghini performante or the Mclaren 720s?
Yawn... first of all, it has been different drivers. 2nd of all, it has been 10,08 seconds, not a "full 11 seconds". Third of all, Nurburgring is different to Laguna Seca. Viper ACR holds the record at Laguna Seca, being over a second faster (1:28,65) than the Porsche 918 (1:29,89) yet it went 7:01,30 on the Nordschleife. Porsche 918 did it at 6:57.
Why? Because its a different track, and a different driver.

Definitely felt like this year was really, really lacking in content. Used to have the hot laps but had the editor side as well and there were roundtable discussions at the finale and THEN we get the World's Greatest Drag Race. The old documentary format was way better and was what I looked forward all year from Motor Trend. Hope there's more content next year.

Not hating on your opinion, but you need to understand 1 thing. The people who buy these cars have "unlimited" money, so the multiple cars vs this ferrari isn't really an issue to them as they will already own multiple cars. The ferrari would be to them merely "just another car"
People who can afford supercars dont worry about the the service cost and gas mileage, and if you buy a unlimited production supercar and expect it to not depreciate its value, you are unfamiliar with how things work. And also in general, if you have to calculate the money you will spend on your car, you dont have enough money to own it. Simple.
What depreciation? Get a Spider and they're still all going over book. Go for a Cali T or something then yea you're gonna lose about 30 - 50k in the first year if you buy brand new. Service costs are included in a service pack & there's 7 years warranty on them... so actually the maintenance costs are pretty much the same as any other car sports car.
No they don't, I know a quite a few people that have worked real hard & got to a point in life and said "bucket list", they've saved and they buy the car they want. Yes they may have multiple cars in the sense that they have a daily or something but they certainly don't have "unlimited" money and it's certainly not a case of just another car. In most cases it's their absolute pride and joy. They drive them and they love them. Yes there's always the tools that have more money than sense i.e I once heard a guy - after he over took three cars and smashed all their windscreens and then his got smashed by someone else (roads weren't best quality), people were absolutely fuming as you can imagine - he goes oh I don't know what you're bothered about, I'll just get a new one in summer. He drove a Lambo Avio. He's the kind of toxic super car driver but in reality if you speak to most of the guys, they're pretty humble about it and they big big car guys that have finally got to where they wanna be in life!
