The worst thing someone can do is try to “help them see it in a positive way”. Like, that helps if *you* do it yourself or ask for it, but when someone else sees you stressing or anxious it can only come off as condescending, invalidating, or commanding, and make the anxiety even worse. Trauma/Anxiety 101, the 3c’s of control/context/connection on the nervous system. Telling someone what to do hits all 3, they’re describing the chain of events and how it made them feel, and instead of being met with understanding they’re met with a critique of competency implying their reality is invalid or invoking a command to do/have done X, it’s literally everything the nervous system considers *NOT SAFE* and people respond with fight/flight as expected. Ironically, the person making that mistake feels misunderstood when it’s not taken well, “I meant to help don’t get upset at me” due to the exact same anxiety response to invalidation.

I'm 6'3" and a half. I don't do it to compensate, I do it because when I was in the Navy I was (and sadly still am) borderline overweight. At 75 inches I failed height/weight ratio but at 76 I passed and we always rounded up.

The worst thing someone can do is try to “help them see it in a positive way”. Like, that helps if *you* do it yourself or ask for it, but when someone else sees you stressing or anxious it can only come off as condescending, invalidating, or commanding, and make the anxiety even worse.
Trauma/Anxiety 101, the 3c’s of control/context/connection on the nervous system. Telling someone what to do hits all 3, they’re describing the chain of events and how it made them feel, and instead of being met with understanding they’re met with a critique of competency implying their reality is invalid or invoking a command to do/have done X, it’s literally everything the nervous system considers *NOT SAFE* and people respond with fight/flight as expected.
Ironically, the person making that mistake feels misunderstood when it’s not taken well, “I meant to help don’t get upset at me” due to the exact same anxiety response to invalidation.
