    Despite being the two greatest names in prog of all times, the guys are just no competition to each other. I mean, it's rare for two prog bands to offer so vastly different repertoires - if I want badass and bombastic I pick DT, if I feel gloomy and ethereal I take Opeth for a spin.

    • @Guppusmaximus
      @Guppusmaximus ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Fates Warning never gets the credit they deserve for establishing melodic Progressive Metal. Imho, 'Perfect Symmetry' was innovative and paved the road for albums like 'I&W' albeit DT could get a bit heavier at times. Whereas Watchtower (and later on, Spastic Ink) truly defined technical Progressive Metal. Lastly, I think a band like Spiral Architect re-innovated the genre by combining the technical and melodic elements and they, like FW, never get any credit.

    • @mvunit3
      @mvunit3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Guppusmaximus You hit ALL the points! All the bands you mentioned are some of my all time favorites. But Fates Warning is my all time fave Prog Metal band, and have followed them since "No Exit", and then discovered the "John Arch" era of the band . . . then much later, became a "Arch/Matheos" fan as well.
      I guess Watchtower, Mekong Delta, Sieges Even, Cacophony, Atheist and Cynic started the more technical side of Prog Metal (before the Title was used) and then Spiral Architect and Zero Hour for the 2000's (and various very obscure bands in-between).

    I never could get into Dream Theater. The main difference betw them and an Opeth, beyond obvious differences in style and aesthetics, is that DT always felt demonstrative, like their music is more about showmanship and making music theory into songs, whereas Opeth felt much more organic and natural.

      How can a normal functioning brain dislike "Scenes From A Memory" though? Their new work is uninspired sure but that album is one of the best prog metal albums of all time. If you have any sort of palette and understanding of dynamics, melody, originality etc you can't listen to that and go: "Yeah this isn't good", subjectivity doesn't excuse a bad ear.
