I remember how awesome JCPenny was when I was a kid. I would go there and mom and dad would go look at clothes while I played whatever console was out at the time. I remember playing Banjo Kazooie on N64 and Street Fighter Alpha 2 on the Saturn specifically for what felt like hours. Being a kid and going through the mall was so awesome when I was younger. Malls are sadly pathetic in comparison to the 90's amazing malls. You used to get free food samples and could eat all sorts of goodies then hit up the food court. From there head over to the arcade and drop some Tokens in that you would exchange for tickets and win stuff. Man the 90's was actually awesome. Great job Erin, loved this look through the catalog. Really brings back some good memories.
Our equivalent of these in the UK was the Argos catalogue. When you went into an Argos store they had them laminated to browse through. Became known as "the laminated book of dreams" thanks to comedian Bill Bailey. They're laminated to catch our tears. Looking through them was just something we did as kids to pass time. Also, man, JC Penney loved Comic Sans.
Same, my mom used to work at a JC Penney in the late 90s to late 2000s and those catalogs were my go to for Christmas/Birthday List making when back in my 90s kid days lol
Yeah I was born premature at 27 weeks in Canada In 1993 so I was 4 years old in 1997. But when I got to kindergarten in September of 1998 to spring 1999. And later 1 grade fall of 1999 to spring of 2000 . And second grade fall of 2000 to 2001 the end of the 20th century was awesome. Great TV shows pro wrestling WWF WCW ECW. Nintendo 64 PS1 Buffy X Files Power Ranger's if your Candian like me Uh Oh game show. YTV network the Pokemon craze was huge in 1999 2000 2001 the internet was. Still new technology The 21st century has better technology with the internet being mainstream and soical media and easy access to info. But pre nine 11 the years leading towards the end of the 20th century where awesome. Even the 80s even though I wasn't born yet.
I was hoping you'd do this again this year. There was nothing quite like going through those catalogs as a kid and circling things that you wanted for Christmas. We always managed to get the Sears, JC Penny and Toys R Us Christmas catalogs every year and it was great. Simple fun times that I know we as kids took for granted and was over too quickly. I had that magazine, wow, my first Nintendo 64 game was Mario then Legend of Zelda. Afterwards, Goldeneye 007, Shadows of the Empire and Star Fox Love the music background btw!
Wow...crazy to think Goldeneye was $70 back then. What a great game. N64 was the last Nintendo console I ever owned so there's a lot of nostalgia here.
I don't think there was a more exciting time as a kid as when the jcpenney or sears catalog showed up and you got to write down or circle everything you wanted.
This was so cool to see! It’s wild that games sort of stayed around the same price point. It’s still expensive but you’d think it would be even more today for what we’re getting in comparison 😮

I always love seeing these old catalogs in thrift shops. I may not have this one but I do have the 1997 Sears Wishbook as well as a few others from various years. Like the 1994 JCPenney Catalog you reviewed back in May.
I saved your previous, 1994 catalog video from summer to watch this month. I love love love looking back at these. Wish i kept the ones i grew up with. In Canada we had the Sears Christmas WishBook.
When I went to my grandparents house the kids were told to stay quiet so I'd get the catalogue out of the closet and stare at the games and toys. Then at Christmas my grandparents spoiled us.
I watched this already yesterday, but I'm watching it again since you reuploaded. It's surprising how many older consoles they had advertised, the Super NES and Sega Genesis were both well past their support lifetime.

Right when you pointed to that Docs logo on those crappy third party controllers I totally had a flashback. I know I had one of those controllers and they made all sorts of rattling noises lol.. I was 9 in 1997! Such great nostalgia here!
I had those Docs wireless control pads. They were pretty terrible, you had to have it pointed directly at the IR receiver for them to work. You couldn't really sit comfortably.
well it was better growing up in the 80’s, than the 90’s. Sorry but 80’s was the most creative shows and toys. He-Man is soulful and deep / philosophical, at times. Soulfulness was lost as soon the Ninja Turtles became the dominant show, and the 90’s were themed on such things
I like how you just start on the section people care about the most, the video game section. LOL. The SNES was pretty much dead by 1997 and most people were moving onto next gen hardware. The Gameboy was pretty much as well until a certain game about pocket monsters came out the next year. I had one of those VTech I.Q. Unlimited computers that you hooked up to your tv. It was mostly educational stuff but I have a soft spot for it. I was too old for toys by 1997 but it's always fun to go through these old catalogs. Another great video Erin. Short and simple.

So, my parents picked me up the system, "Duke Nukem 3D" and "Sonic Jam". The following day, we returned it all to KB for a full refund -- despite having opened the games -- with no hassle or argument from the employees.
Christmas of 1997 I was just about to turn 15, I'm thinking that's probably when my brother and I got our Playstation. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Darkstalkers and Final Fantasy VII were the first games we had for it.

It seems they have all but abandoned mass mailing toy catalogues now, I haven't seen one in years. I remember seeing the N64 getting covered by the news in 1997, but I remember seeing an American news story on it somehow; Maybe on Foxtel (cable TV)? Very exciting footage of Mario hopping around in front of the castle; A big step up from the Mega Drive I was playing at the time. The Sabrina doll made me happy to see; I have always been a big fan of Melissa Joan Heart since Clarissa Explains It All on Nickelodeon. The Casper shooting toy looks interesting, but it's probably going to be a bit crap at that size. Cool idea though. Thanks for sharing, it was nice nostalgia bait from when the US looked like a cool place to visit with all the best tech.

I actually tried to trade it in at Gamestop once but they wouldn't take it because the serial number sticker had worn away. Now I'm wondering about that, if it was like that when I bought it on ebay it may have been hot merchandise.

i use to have that beanie donkey kong, they must have been sold in the uk too. it was found in the grass next to a main road back in like 2002.
