A Walk Around The Milan Central Rail Station / Milano Centrale

  • King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy laid the cornerstone of the new station on April 28, 1906, before a blueprint for the station had even been chosen. The last, real, contest for its construction was won in 1912 by architect Ulisse Stacchini, whose design was modeled after Union Station in Washington, DC, and the construction of the new station began.
Due to the Italian economic crisis during World War I, construction proceeded very slowly, and the project, rather simple at the beginning, kept changing and became more and more complex and majestic. This happened especially when Benito Mussolini became Prime Minister, and wanted the station to represent the power of the fascist regime. The major changes were the new platform types and the introduction of the great steel canopies by Alberto Fava; 341 m (1,119 ft) long and covering an area of 66,500 square metres.
Construction resumed in earnest in 1925 and on July 1, 1931 the station was officially opened in the presence of Foreign Minister Galeazzo Ciano.
Its façade is 200 metres wide and its vault is 72 metres high, a record when it was built. It has 24 platforms. Each day about 330,000 passengers use the station, totaling about 120 million per year.
The station has no definite architectural style, but is a blend of many different styles, especially Liberty and Art Deco, but not limited to those. It is adorned with numerous sculptures. “The ‘incongruous envelope of stone’ (Attilio Pracchi) of this gigantic and monumental building dominates Piazza Duca d’Aosta.” [2]
On September 25, 2006, officials announced a €100 million project, already in progress, to refurbish the station. Of the total cost, €20 million has been allocated to restore "certain areas of high artistic value" while the remaining €80 million will be used for more general improvements to the station to make it more functional with the current railway services. The project includes moving the ticket office and installing new elevators and escalators for increased accessibility.[3]
    Train services[edit]
The station has 24 tracks. Every day about 320,000 passengers pass through the station using about 500 trains, for an annual total of 120 million passengers. The station is served by national and international routes, with both long-distance and regional lines. Daily international destinations include Bern, Lugano, Geneva, Zürich, Paris, Vienna, Barcelona and Munich.[4]
The station is also connected to Milan-Malpensa Airport through the Malpensa Express train service.

Milan's Central Station is possibly one of the most beautiful termina in Europe. It's big and impressive although the new shopping area doesn't seem to measure up to the high-level architecture of the station.

Something I noticed is that in EU, shops form on transportation stations. Locals come hang out in train station even when they’re not traveling. The stations are not walled off with highway structure for automobiles so it’s easy and pleasant to walk by.
It’s not very common in US aside from the east coast Tristate area to see malls inside, but in those structures are so ill kept.

I was coming thru to Milan from Rome in 1985. My Porter on my first class train helped me off the train with all my luggage.
I was supposed to get my connecting train to Geneva. As we disembarked, he started running down the station
With all my luggage. I was so mad. I took off after him and just as I was about to grab his scruffy neck, he dropped
My three pieces of soft luggage and went and hid in between the trains.
I actually saw him peaking thru to see what I would
Do. Well it was lunch time and no Police! I just grabbed my stuff and
went to get my train. He really unnerved me and
I missed my connection for the fast train.
It took me over 7 hours to get to Geneva on a local train. I was furious but
Milan is known for pickpockets and thieves.
You’ve been warned. The train station itself was beautiful.

I've camped out in this terminal a time or two after a very late arrival, missing a connection on to Roma/Napoli/Sorrento, and then continuing on early the next morning. A few times I wandered out and used the opportunity to explore a bit and discovered the charm of the late night city. I love Milano when the thousands of tourists and shoppers aren't jamming the streets. To wander the city without the crowds is amazing.

In France, train lines were owned by different companies like America. Each train company had to build their own station to service their routes. In Germany and Italy, train were run by the Gov't. And centralized all the routes and stations. (Herr Hitler and Mussolini)

    • @wisequeens

it was the "terminal station" concept vs "transit station" : one huge array of rails direct into the city instead of peripheral station , you must think like an ancient last 19 th century architect considering the northeast side of Milano mainly " industrial estate" and economic earth of the city.

trainrover ...From Wikipedia: Fascist architecture is a style of architecture developed by architects of fascist societies in the early 20th century. The style gained popularity in the late 1920s with the rise of modernism along with the nationalism associated with fascist governments in western Europe. The style resembles that of ancient Rome. However, the fascist-era buildings lack ostentatious design, and were constructed with symmetry and simplicity. Both Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler utilized the new style of architecture as one of many attempts to unify the citizens of their nations, mark a new era of nationalist culture, and exhibit the absolute rule of the nation.[1] Today, new fascist architecture is scarce because of the Axis powers' defeat in World War II, as the fascist political ideology quickly went into decline.

    • @trainrover
      @trainrover 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Surely that architecture mustn't have been called Fascist back in the day, right? And hadn't the dawn of the 1930s occurred before the advent of Fascismo anyhow? I've always sensed fascism in NYC's art deco (I forget the precise name of the genre) from its sidewalks, might anybody else see the same?

@@MichaelJirochVisualArtist Not really, there are just few elements of fascist architecture, the overall design (eclectic: a mix of neoclassical, monumental libery and art déco) is from the previous period.

In that nice station in Milan I found the most rude people I've ever seen in my life.
The guy selling tickets, and another security man. Better not asked anything, they will treat you like dogs.

Raffaele Arecchi , not really, these malls and restaurants inside these old Stations sustain the building, pay the bills for upkeep. These old train stations are high maintenance and take a lot of money to maintain. Otherwise the building would be an empty dark shell wet cave with no life in it at all. If not they'd be razed to the ground and just empty platforms would take their place.
