Andy Hampsten is my cycling hero. When I think of a down to earth American cyclist I think of him, and he never got to much attention always being thought of as a support rider until the Giro. Domestiques are the coolest riders in my opinion.
Hampsten got caught in the worst era of cheating in cycling's history. Without EPO use in the peloton Andy would have won more and rode longer. Real shame, he was a special talent
I got Andy Hampsten's autograph on a page about 7-11 in a cycling magazine I have when 7-11 arrived at Stapleton Airport in Denver, Colorado on their flight back from Italy after Andy had taken out the Giro. I was waiting at that gate patiently for about five hours so I wouldn't miss them and it was just me at that end of the concourse. I freaking scooped the news reporters and got to talk to Andy first. It will always be a life highlight for me to have met him just like I've also met Greg Lemond, Ron Kiefel, Jonathan Vaughters and several other pro cyclists. They are all great down to earth humans despite the great things they have achieved in pro cycling. Andy seemed to down play that he had just won a Grand Tour and the first American to do so. He made it seem like he had just ridden some little stage race with the team and they ended up winning. We know how very hard they had to work to win the Giro. The Tour de France is a fantastic race but the Giro d' Italia is my favorite. That Irish pro you listed as number five. Who is he ? I've never heard of him and wouldn't consider Kevin Livingston really to be a cycling legend.
Andy is such a nice guy. I played softball with him for over a year before I had any clue who he was and what he'd accomplished. I just thought he was your typical Boulder cyclist!
Dan and Simon had the privilege of eating Sir Bradley Wiggins's dust in the 2011 British National Road Race championship while Matt had the privilege of touching his bum in the 2012 Olympics
+Till Meister Interviews are a great idea, i would love to hear about the ex-pro riders. This could become a really nice weekly segment. Perhaps the word "legends" should be replaced with something else though, it feels a little bit out of place. Keep up the good work lads.:)
I reckon there are a lot of pro riders from the 90s and early 00s having an intentionally anonymous retirement. Laying low and hoping no one has too close a look at their past. e.g. Mr Ekimov, although he is working for katusha and not happy to be questioned too much.
While visiting Seattle I stopped in to the Hampsten Cycles "Factory" (ie, Steve's garage) and got to have a great talk about bikes with, well, Steve. Lovely chap, happy to answer all my questions even though I made it clear I wasn't going to actually buy a bike.
You should do John Tomac. I know his son is a professional motocross racer and he’s his trainer, but how involved is he in cycling/MTB community today? Plus he is Simon’s cycling hero
That was pretty cool, but I would like to see a video that goes more in depth into the post-career of one of the most legendary riders, like Merckx, Poulidor, Hinault, or Lloyd.
Blistering barnacles, a Cervelo Test Team rider upstaged by a toy rocket... I didn't take in most of what was said because I was thinking of Tintin on the Moon.
Could u do Matt Stephens he was my favourite pro cyclists when I was growing up When I saw him in the black jersey in the giro it was inspiring did u also know he won the British national championships
+Eoin Mellon matt got the british national team into the Atlanta olympics in 96- but was then dropped from the team himself just before hand, really unfair- matt was actually a pretty successful cyclist though
Love this idea/vid. How about Nelson Vails, Frankie Andreu, Steve Tilford, Jens Voight, Cippolini, Vinokurov, the Grewals, Chris Horner, Cancellara, Chiappucci, Raul Aclcala, Davis Phinney, Bobby Julich, Danny Pate, Svein Tuft, Roberto Heras, Dave Zabriske, Christian Vande Velde, Jonathan Vaughters. I might be stretchin the "legend" criteria a bit but...:)
Please include: Martial Gallant, Gilbert Duclos Lasalle, Francois Lemaechand, Silvio Martinello, Marco Villa, Paolo Grisandi, Andrea Collinelli, Tony Doyle, Lutz Heßlich, Lothar Thoms, Joan Llaneras, Juan Curuchet, Moreno Argentin, Peter Post, Patrick Sercu, Andre Dierickx, Didi Thurau, Roger de Vlaemick, Ettiene de Wilde, Claude Criquelion,, Sean Kelly, Charly Mottet, Marc & Ivonne Madiot, Pello Ruiz Cabestany, Pedro Delgado, airs Freuler, Vitaeslav Ekimov, Guintautas Umaras, Arturas Kasputis, Sergei Kopylov, Phillippe Boyer, Sergio Bianchetto and Super Mario
Was it Bartoli who rode custom frames even carbon ? Some suggestions Dario Frigo, Gert Jan Theunisse, Eric Van Lancker, Olaf Ludwig, Matthew Stephens lol.. to name a few of many...
How about the Motorola Team 1992? Steve Larsen, Andy Bishop,Frankie Andrew,Jan Schur, Steve Bauer,Sean Yates and of course there Team Managers/Doctors, Dr Massimo Testa, Tom Schuler?
So that 60's mod bookshelf shows up in the background of many videos in different places (this is Matt's living room, no?). Is there one of it or did you guys go to town on ebay?
Most of these riders weren't legends...just plain ole professional cyclist. But I think I see what you're doing; setting things up so that in the next installment of this series you can name a couple GCN presenters.
Haha, probably! I guess the trouble is, that we know what most of the legends are doing now, it's the lesser known riders that can be more interesting.
+Global Cycling Network no they lesser known! what about russian, german, african, japonese, kajackstan, riders, you have a big job to do if you want to talk about lesser riders.you just telling us what ever you want , but we already know! try to be up to date at least
+Rupali Lamba what kind of scratches? you can remove minor scraches (hair-sized one or more, if it isnt deep enough you can remove it.) -use the smoothest sand paper (only work on glossy paint) -and polish them with car polisher. -done
Great concept, please do Edwig Van Hooydonk, legend (2 Flanders wins) who would have been one of the absolute greats but had the class to retire early instead of jump on the juice. Arguably less talented cyclists like Meewsuw, went on to shine... but Eddy V was the real deal
I watched a video of Lance and he said he only rode the bike two times last year. Lance, it's not about how hard you are knocked down; it's about how fast you can get back up. If you don't ride anymore, get a motorcycle.
What about the legend that is the "Big Man", Miguel Indurain? Surely he must be a contender... Absolute monster, did he not use 54/55T chainrings in TT's? He was a major influence on me as a kid. Also nice to see the Tin Tin Rocket Dan #GCNMoonRocket
Hi, why don't you do a piece on former Italian rider Flavio Zappi, now running a successful club and pro team in Oxford. 3 former Zappi's now riding for Team Wiggins!!!
nice to hear the straight delivery without the politically correct bashing of former icons and slanderous allegations. scanlon's story is perhaps the saddest of the five here.
Greg "Le Mans" (as Velominati refer to him). total Ledge, humbling to hear the lack of bitterness, and the reason I will never own or buy a Trek product.
Being from Marks hometown I can confirm that Mark does own a road bike, is still fast and still winning local races.
And yet people will still wonder, where is Dan Lloyd..... Cervelo will never be the same again.
Did you know that he was part of their test team?
HAAAAAAAAAHahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaa!
+woozer No wonder he looked familiar? sneaky bastard!
I got Andy Hampsten's autograph on a page about 7-11 in a cycling magazine I have when 7-11 arrived at Stapleton Airport in Denver, Colorado on their flight back from Italy after Andy had taken out the Giro. The Mapei team kit is so 90s but still really beautiful
Andy is such a nice guy. I played softball with him for over a year before I had any clue who he was and what he'd accomplished. I just thought he was your typical Boulder cyclist!
I know where Dan Lloyd is now but where was he when he was a pro???? ;0)
Dan and Simon had the privilege of eating Sir Bradley Wiggins's dust in the 2011 British National Road Race championship while Matt had the privilege of touching his bum in the 2012 Olympics
Dan was racing in the TdF. Seems pretty lofty to me just to have the privilege of racing in that one. Where were you bilwit?
love the concept of this new series!
I do too. A bit fewer riders and a it longer story on each would be good
+Rixter Second that. Better do two in depth profiles (with interviews?) rather than five snapshots.
+Till Meister Interviews are a great idea, i would love to hear about the ex-pro riders. This could become a really nice weekly segment. Perhaps the word "legends" should be replaced with something else though, it feels a little bit out of place. Keep up the good work lads.:)
googled the linda mccartney team and it came up with a couple notable riders you may have heard of, matt stephens and bradley wiggins.
+Lane Williams Always wondered if you had to b a vegan ro ride for the McCartney team.
I reckon there are a lot of pro riders from the 90s and early 00s having an intentionally anonymous retirement. Laying low and hoping no one has too close a look at their past. e.g. Mr Ekimov, although he is working for katusha and not happy to be questioned too much.

Thanks for having me appear briefly with Steve Hampsten when I helped out at the Hampsten cycles booth
Great piece. I like learning about former champions.
You should do John Tomac. I know his son is a professional motocross racer and he’s his trainer, but how involved is he in cycling/MTB community today? Plus he is Simon’s cycling hero
1:18 - Bartoli was the UCI world cup champ in 1998 only. In '97 he was 6th.
That was pretty cool, but I would like to see a video that goes more in depth into the post-career of one of the most legendary riders, like Merckx, Poulidor, Hinault, or Lloyd.
What a very cool new series. Keep it up!
Excellent. More of these please.
mark is back on the road and gave me a busting a few time. Nice fella and still a world champ to me
Scanlon looks more fit now as a masters MTB racer than he did at the end of his pro career.
What about Matt Stephens, Daniel Lloyd, Simon Richardson and Tom Last?
excellent new series. interesting facts to boot. Eddy Merckx for me, favourite British rider has to be Matt
Love the Tintin Rocket!
Blistering barnacles, a Cervelo Test Team rider upstaged by a toy rocket... I didn't take in most of what was said because I was thinking of Tintin on the Moon.
Great concept GCN. More please.
+toasty bear #team Matt
Eoin Mellon #teammatt - that epic :)
Really?
Love this idea/vid. How about Nelson Vails, Frankie Andreu, Steve Tilford, Jens Voight, Cippolini, Vinokurov, the Grewals, Chris Horner, Cancellara, Chiappucci, Raul Aclcala, Davis Phinney, Bobby Julich, Danny Pate, Svein Tuft, Roberto Heras, Dave Zabriske, Christian Vande Velde, Jonathan Vaughters. I rode with Hampsten at L'Eroica in Tuscany in October. Nice guy and still fit as a butchers dog. Brilliant considering he is 52 now.
love the tintin rocket in the background
A big surprise to see myself in this episode, the photo of Hampsten Cycles has me standing with Steve Hampsten working at their booth
Hey Mr Livingston is a friend of ours good for somebody to recognize him
Please include: Martial Gallant, Gilbert Duclos Lasalle, Francois Lemaechand, Silvio Martinello, Marco Villa, Paolo Grisandi, Andrea Collinelli, Tony Doyle, Lutz Heßlich, Lothar Thoms, Joan Llaneras, Juan Curuchet, Moreno Argentin, Peter Post, Patrick Sercu, Andre Dierickx, Didi Thurau, Roger de Vlaemick, Ettiene de Wilde, Claude Criquelion,, Sean Kelly, Charly Mottet, Marc & Ivonne Madiot, Pello Ruiz Cabestany, Pedro Delgado, airs Freuler, Vitaeslav Ekimov, Guintautas Umaras, Arturas Kasputis, Sergei Kopylov, Phillippe Boyer, Sergio Bianchetto and Super Mario
I really like this series, very interesting !!!
Happy New Year!
Hey! That's a very good initiative to bring to spot former cyclists!
I was waiting for them to tell us about that Daniel Lloyd guy who used to ride for Cervelo test team.
You guys should do some more of these
Little fact, sociopath Armstrong's nickname for the Maillot Jaune/Yellow Jersey was the Mellow Johnny hence his bike shop being called the same.
Keep this series rolling, Curious if these legends compete in the market against old rivals, The Finest Fiat Dealers in te world!
Yes, I like this new one... and I'd like would like it to include the GCN presenter's history
nice new serie
Was it Bartoli who rode custom frames even carbon ?
Some suggestions Dario Frigo, Gert Jan Theunisse, Eric Van Lancker, Olaf Ludwig, Matthew Stephens lol.. to name a few of many...
Not sure I have the same definition of the term "legends" as you all - but neat idea for a series...
For The next episodes you should mention RAUL ALCALA, the Mexican who won a time trial at the Tour de France from Miguel Indurain.
number on is Lance Amstrong
good stuff!
How about the Motorola Team 1992? Steve Larsen, Andy Bishop,Frankie Andrew,Jan Schur, Steve Bauer,Sean Yates and of course there Team Managers/Doctors, Dr Massimo Testa, Tom Schuler?
LOOK at the handlebars of the first rider @0.28, insane.
So that 60's mod bookshelf shows up in the background of many videos in different places (this is Matt's living room, no?). Is there one of it or did you guys go to town on ebay?
+Neil Donahue
do you know the name of the shelf by any chance?
Iban Mayo (Euskaltel - Euskadi) supposedly became a long distance truck driver so check him out for a future episode
Very interesting!
Great series start - just maybe try and get the camera in focus next time?!
Andy was fantastic in the Giro and it is amazing that he is still the only American to win that race.
+Global Cycling Network Hey is there any way to remove scatches??
+Global Cycling Network no they lesser known! what about russian, german, african, japonese, kajackstan, riders, you have a big job to do if you want to talk about lesser riders.you just telling us what ever you want , but we already know! try to be up to date at least
+Rupali Lamba what kind of scratches? you can remove minor scraches
(hair-sized one or more, if it isnt deep enough you can remove it.)
-use the smoothest sand paper (only work on glossy paint)
-and polish them with car polisher.
-done
this is a neat idea.
John Tomac and Rune Hoydal and Ned Overend and Steve Tilford next please...
Quite interesting. Would have been good to have quotes from some of the former pros.
(3:29) Is that Peter Sagan on the right of this picture, damn he was doing good for a 9 year old.
Great concept, please do Edwig Van Hooydonk, legend (2 Flanders wins) who would have been one of the absolute greats but had the class to retire early instead of jump on the juice. Arguably less talented cyclists like Meewsuw, went on to shine... but Eddy V was the real deal
Didn't know Rocky was silver medalist back then... 03:29
I watched a video of Lance and he said he only rode the bike two times last year. Lance, it's not about how hard you are knocked down; it's about how fast you can get back up. If you don't ride anymore, get a motorcycle.
i'm surprised at the lack of comments about dan's pronunciation of, "lieutenant". You are English, aren't you, Dan?
lɛfˈtɛnənt
What about the legend that is the "Big Man", Miguel Indurain? Surely he must be a contender... Absolute monster, did he not use 54/55T chainrings in TT's? He was a major influence on me as a kid. Also nice to see the Tin Tin Rocket Dan #GCNMoonRocket
I was hoping to see lance Armstrong
+Rory Yeoman He hasn't quite retired then?
+Terrence Chen I think we all know where he is today....in deep sh!t.....;-)
Dope!
That was Mark Scanlon's 18th birthday.....?! Christ, I'm 33 now and still look 5 years younger than him then!
That last one was kinda depressing :(
Jan Ullrich wasn't his arch rival, they were mates.
Hi, why don't you do a piece on former Italian rider Flavio Zappi, now running a successful club and pro team in Oxford. 3 former Zappi's now riding for Team Wiggins!!!
If you're wondering about Ted King, he's passing out maple syrup at US Cross Nats!
Should include Robert Millar in your next video on cycling legends. Be interesting to see if you could find any information on what he's up to now.
TED KING PLEASE
How come I see no Frank Vandenbroucke?! Big legend both on and off the bike!
Who was the first British cyclist to ride theTD France
I have that same chair somehow I lost the top pillow...
How about actually tracking down and interviewing a few of them?
Dan do you know you're mentioned in Chris froome autobiography
Why was he mentioned? Just curious :)
+SeanTheGamer Because Dan was ahead of him in the British championship
+Patrick Bisogno Tks a mill. :D
GCN you need to make a new one!
Brilliant
I assume you'll be on this one day Dan?
Nelson Vails, Abdujaparov, Ekimov please
nice to hear the straight delivery without the politically correct bashing of former icons and slanderous allegations.
scanlon's story is perhaps the saddest of the five here.
If berzin feel short of boardmans pace what are the odds of chris being clean you think🤔
Hey guys! What about another installment to Where are They Now?
That prison looks a lot like Kilmainham where Liam Neeson was incarcerated for playing Michael Collins.
Can you let us know about Joey McLaughlin?
what happened to this series? Pretty good idea, maybe could get interviews with some of the legends? Lemond, Kelly etc
Greg "Le Mans" (as Velominati refer to him). total Ledge, humbling to hear the lack of bitterness, and the reason I will never own or buy a Trek product.
I'm looking forward to the comment section once you have an installment featuring Armstrong.
Where is Iban Mayo! =)
Where's World Champion Danny Clark?
What about Lance!?
where is Joop Zoetemelk?
Try "5 GCN Dudes - Where Will They End Up?"
I think lance armstrong is a legend too
I now Kevin very well good person
"Ill fated Linda Mc Cartney Team & Ill fated Linda Mc Cartney team" is there a common denominator here? wide spread clip-in issue? ;-)
I guess the only requirement to be a legend, is to have made a bigger name of one self than Lloydie.
And I'm on the sofa drinking a Dogfish Head 120. Lol
#thisisdefinatelyavideoforalltheowldbuggers 😜
Speaking of Greg LeMond... ???
