This is the greatest movie of all time. I love it. Every single moment is just heart grooming, emotionally tapping into the inner most sensitive piece of all of us audience. Something about the camera angles, the acting and the chosen music that makes it all so brilliant and honest. I choke up every time I see this. That's what great film is all about.

It’s clear from the beginning that David is a kind of modern Don Juan who only cares about parties, sex and vanity. He doesn’t pay attention to anything. Life is a game for him. The first semi-accident was a warning but he didn’t listen. After the night with Sofia, he said he’s going to change. But the minute after, he’s going with Julie for another casual recreation. That’s why he’s not entirely a victim.

I remember when I first saw this scene I was so blown away and heartbroken at the same time. A scene captures a moment that everyone can relate to without any dialogue. Two men racing towards the woman they love but there's always going to be only 1 that catches up to her. The true sadness lies with the one that just couldn't keep up. The one left behind. And I think alot of us know exactly how that feels. There's alot of us that just can't keep up from time and time. Therefore, we are the ones left behind.
So let me ask you this then, I have seen this movie around 2005ish and always wonder if, Brian really caught up to her and messed around or was it David's insecure thoughts in his mind of of his friend kissing Sofia?
@@thetruthfrmtx Firstly, sorry for the extremely long response here but I love this movie alot so if you could bare with me that would be great haha. To answer your question in short form no, Brian did not actually run to Sofia and kiss her. This was definitely in his mind that's why the contrast is represented through him being in color and the thought of his friend going to Sofia is in black and white. His insecurities were at an all time high and this is the last point in the film where it stops being real as the remainder of the film is all in his head. He only thought that the reason his best friend took off like that away from him was to automatically go after the girl he loved when that wasn't the case at all. While Brian did meet Sofia they didn't kiss or get together and this is made clear when after David dies in the real world she shows up to his wake and Brian sees her and just smiles and waves. If there was really something going on they would've been more open to each other and would gravitate towards each other but the reality simply was the Brian knew who Sofia was because he knew she was in love with David and David loved her. David was so consumed with his insecurities due to how vein he was throughout his life, constantly concerned with his good looks, he figured that if he was no longer good looking then he would be of no use to any woman ever. So when he met Sofia after his accident, eventhough they had an undeniable connection that they both saw, David was so reluctant to follow through because he thought he was far too hideous for her. But she still saw the chemistry and still had those feelings for him regardless of how he looked. If David would've just given himself a chance then he wouldve found that he could've been happy with Sofia no matter what he looked like because he would've finally found true love. However his insecurities were so deep that he decided to go into the program rather than just to give himself a chance. Sorry for the novel response but I just am so fascinated with this movie and can relate to it on such a deep deep level because I myself have drowned in my own insecurities time and time again and have met various women who I had connections with but I never saw anything through because I automatically gave up on myself because I immediately jumped to the conclusion that I was not good enough for a woman like that and that she is only talking to me to be nice. I may have missed many opportunities to find my own little piece of happiness due to the fact that I never gave myself a chance. This movie is a very powerful one and one that I relate to very much so. The scene where he looks at himself in the mirror just after he took all those pills to "take himself out" and he just looked into the mirror with that sad expression and waved goodbye to himself always makes me choke up and gets me.

Such a sad scene, because Tom Cruise´s character realizes that the girl he loves is in love with another man. It seems as if he runs to confirm this. But at the end, he knows that this is the truth and that he has lost everything. In a way, this is hard to watch, if you have experienced it in one form or another.
No it wasn't. Tech support told him at the end that day after this he went home and never say Sofia again, he kept fighting until one day he was too consumed with depression and longing for Sofia and in so much physical pain too that he "gave up" and that is when he went to LE to start his lucid dream and in real life that was staged as him overdosing and dying. When he woke up the morning after this was just used as the splice... David said before he was put to sleep that he wanted the dream to start with him waking up on the sidewalk and Sofia being there.
I've always wondered if this moment actually happened in David's real life, I mean this was just before getting into the dream, so Sophia had a real relationship with Brian, did that actually happen? Or it was part of the nightmare?
I tend to think it was just David imagining that's where Brian was going. Cuz they showed later on when Brian held the memorial service for David that Sophia shows up and she only gives Brian like a little nod. If they had actually been romantic I tend to think it would have been a more personal greeting.
People who say they don’t like Tom as an actor must be unaware of his career! My mom has even mention that she’s not a fan (she doesn’t like most heart throb types she just likes good actors) which I admire about her but even friends I’ve met feel the same! My dad always said it’s because most people know him from his 80s hits or action movies! My dad showed me movies like vanilla sky, collateral, Born on the 4th of July, The last samurai etc…everyone of these performances are some of the best in film imo! He’s crazy AF in real life no denying that but if you think he’s bad or overrated watch vanilla sky or the other 3 films I mentioned and then tell me that! Hell he did the whole badass hitman role in collateral years before John wick which so many people praise and tbh the hitman in collateral is much better & more realistic! I do think it’s a shame many people only see Tom Cruise as just the 80s heart throb or action guy because he can give an incredible performance on the right movie!
David's friend Brian there must have extremely unappealing to women where he was just as rejected by them as David was after David was disfigured even though Brian was not disfigured at all. For someone like David to have to be horribly disfigured from a car accident to get down to Brian's level there, that says a lot about Brian.
Brian strikes me as a bit of a simp ('My dream girl! JULIE GIANNI') and jealous of David. Envy. He could talk an interested woman out of being interested. He was hurt by David taking his love interest Sophia away from him. Something friends should NEVER do to eachother. David could have damn near any woman but he just can't resist moving in on his best friends prospective woman. It's a dick move.

In the movie, it was explained that he kept himself shunned from society for a year after the accident, then he went to go find her in her studio where he asked her to go out over the weekend. After that night He went to go fight the board for full control of his company. After that he knew that any future chance of him and Sofia being together would never be like the first night they met. Along with being in pain physically and emotionally, he went to go sign the lucid dream clause and left a note for Thomas tip to have control of the company and committed suicide.
Because most people don't know what it's like to be lonely and so helplessly consumed by jealousy like that so that is how the director shows it . the unrealistic lighting is meant to illustrate that it is fiction and the fact that it cuts back to close up on David who is also running illustrate it is what he is thinking.

That did really happen. We see during the elevator scene where he talks to the tech support guy that she never came back for him when he was lying on the street. She did come back for him when he was on the street when he was in his lucid dream. That’s in fact the point where he wanted his lucid dream to start. You can tell that’s the point the lucid dream starts, because of the orangey, purpley sky, the vanilla sky.

Bryan never hooked up with her. Yes that scene was still reality, but he was imagining the worst. Imagining them running towards each other etc.

soda The overdose and death was not 'staged'. He really did die, and his body was taken by LE and put into a suspended state.
You can even hear what sounds like a tape being rewinded/recalibrated right at the end of the clip. Really cool.
