The Dangers of Buying Used Lego

- Be careful what you buy online, it might not be what you expect. I wasn't that surprised with my purchase, to be fair.

That's such a bummer bro.
I’ve had this happen before, not with lego but when buying some Halo Mega sets, 2 were on clearance and were missing 50% of the parts and another I had to be full price for and was missing a bag with a majority of the parts. It sucks when it happens, hope you’re able to get all the replacement pieces
Sadly, this is where Lego collecting has landed for the time being. I hope it gets better, but it seems and hobby post Covid has been tainted by scalpers and assholes.
Also, make sure to check if there was a sticker sheet for this set.
Yeah, a lot of hobbies are seeing similar problems. I don't intend to be doing auctions after this, so at least this shouldn't be an issue going forward.
You know, I didn't even consider that there might be stickers. Thanks!
This essentially happens to every hobby as soon as enough greedy scumbags figure out that you might be able to make quick money with it. At the moment graded vintage video games have also become a nightmare. Personally I guess we'll just have to sit this out for a couple of years until enough people lost enough money by storing huge boxes without being able to sell them with insane profits. My hot take: At the moment, even for valuable vintage sets, do not pay a cent over original retail price. Only when scalpers and BS YT channels pushing Lego as investment start loosing serious amounts of money or at least are not able to make money anymore this crazyness will stop.
@@tetsi0815 it’s is RARE to see any set that isn’t currently in production not over retail price. There is simply too much demand because people are realizing what they missed out on. Also, because so many sets were parted out into “the Lego bin,” older sets have essentially all but disappeared for used sets
@@tetsi0815 Amen, brother ✊
@@kraZylegos Yes, but that is only part of the problem. Scalpers are IMHO the real pest here. E.g. look at the Bricklink Designer Program. On Bricklink alone there are >100 Sets (1% of all the sets sold in 2021) of 910001 new (sealed) for at least 2.7 times the original retail value. Around 50 have been sold in the last 6 months for an average >400€. Not sure how many of them have ended up in storage or on the next Bricklink shopjust to sell them later. Meaning that none of those Bricklink shops bought the set to actually build it. The only reason for buying them was to make insane amounts of money by exploiting FOMO. Looking at the Sticker-Sheets currently there's 1 for the insane price of 90€ - so not many of the sets have been parted out, I guess. Luckily while the Minifigs are technically exclusive, their parts have been sold in other sets, so their price has not become that insane. That's why I'm saying - at the moment do not buy any Lego set only one cent above original retail. Then and only then this insane price hike will end, because a lot of scalpers will have lost money and will move somewhere else.
Has happend to me as well but in some cases I do believe it was an honest mistake from a parent who just didn't know that what they were selling was from a knock-off brand that they got from a thrift store.
Could be the case. Could go either way, honestly.
I had this twice with Amazon.. Ordered a few sets and in two of them was just random fake Lego pieces.
I find that Amazon is a bit of a cesspool these days. Too many scams.
I'm a OG Lego collector. 90% of my collection dates back to 80's and 90's. I find the current Lego community so cringe. I'm trying to put a Bricker community together. I wouldn't mind chillen with you. You seem cool.
Thanks man! I wish I had more of the older sets, some of those are really cool.
To reassure you. If you missed an auction by a dollar it doesn't mean the highest bidder necessarily one by bidding one dollar more than you. They could have literally bid $100 more than you and still won an had to pay the $1 extra. So it's likely they were willing to pay a lot more than you if that makes you feel any better about losing said auction. So if anything you probably saved money in comparison to what said thing is worth.
Yeah, I have a hard rule that if anything goes above what I could get it for on Bricklink, I stop bidding. I won two and vowed to delete my account after they arrived 😂 auctions are not for me
this is why I dont care about the minifig
I just feel like if I buy something, it should all be there 🤷
Happened to me at Ebay... bought a used at at set 75288 from ebay... no box , but sealed bags... ended up missing 67 pieces... like a full bad inside the bag, which was weird.. I had to purchase the parts separately.. and 3 figures... ended up paying like a sealed one....
Exactly, it was the bag with the figures in it. Then they try to pawn off the rest of the set to get their money back. It's so scummy 😞
I bought the snow trooper battle pack (75320) it was at clearance at Walmart and i finally opened it and it was full of lepin parts 😂
A moment of silence for your loss 😞
At least you didn't pay full price, though
If it was from a retail store, then you could probably get a refund. Unlike goodwill, Walmart is not selling items "as-is" (unlike goodwill). Therefore, consumer protection laws pretty much guantee you a refund or exchange of some kind (as long as you can prove your purchase).
This is why I only ever order lepin from aliexpress. At least you get what you pay for and you know you can get your money back if you get ripped off. Can't say the same for buying LEGO anymore!
Lepin? Yikes 😱
But hey, what works for you works for you. This was a goodwill auction and I was kind of expecting something weird to happen with it 🤷 About 95% of a set for less than current asking price isn't too bad in my book.
