Catherine Middleton, when she first married William, became a Royal Duchess, as the late Queen ennobled Her Grandson the morning of the Wedding, they would've known about it previously, but it wasn't announced Publicly, until the Morning of the Wedding, as per Tradition. William was made The Duke of Cambridge & the Moment they Married Catherine became the Duchess of Cambridge. As a Prince of the Realm & a Senior member of the Royal Family, His Title of "Duke", becomes a Royal Duke, Ranked higher than a Duke. At the moment she became William's Wife, she could also use "Princess" However because She wasn't of Royal Blood, she wasn't a Princess in her own right. If she wished to use the title Princess, She would be, HRH "Princess William". A clear example is seen with Prince Michael of Kent & his Wife Princess Michael of Kent. (Real Name: Baroness Marie-Christine Anna Agnes Hedwig Ida von Reibnitz). They are not HRH, as the Princess is Catholic, which means Prince Michael had to Renounce his Claim to to the Throne.
HRH Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, became HRH Catherine, Princess of Wales, on 8th September 2022, following the death of Queen Elizabeth ll. The Prince of Wales, Prince Charles succeeded to the Throne & became King Charles lll & Named his Eldest Son, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, as his Heir & as the New Prince of Wales & his Wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, as The New Princess of Wales. Any time prior to the 8th of September 2022, she was a Duchess or Princess William.
Regardless of Personal Preference, it is not the Norm for The Prince of Wales to wear a Wedding Ring on his Ring Finger. This is because once he comes to the Throne, part of his Coronation Ceremony, involves the Symbolic marriage of King to God & included in the Crown Jewels, is the Ring of State, specifically for that Purpose.

That honour would go to his great grandfather George V. He never had a mistress after he married. The second Prince of Wales to also not have a mistress is the Duke of Windsor because when he got married there was no other women. That makes William the 3rd Prince of Wales to not have a mistress.
