He made it look so easy too. Such a fluid triple jumper. When other great triple jump athletes do it it looks so choppy, so focused on power and muscles, but Jonathan just.. glides in strides. Technical perfection.
Agreed. So many triple jumpers now Stamp through the stages, must be hell on the ankles. His physique was perfect for this and he ran 10.5 for the 100m
I was there, sitting right in front of the pit. We were going mad after his second jump, one of the most magic sporting moments I've ever witnessed.
That must have been exciting to see in person, I watched him do this on television
I have followed Jonathan Edwards ever since I've seen him triple jump for years I watched him.
he once jumped 18.43 that was only just over the legal wind limit. Amazing
I was born in 1968. When I grew up everyone treated Bob beamon's long jump record as a freak that would take a long time to be beaten. And it was achieved in the thin air of Mexico City. It lasted 23 years. And here we are with edwards' record, achieved not at altitude, still standing after 27 years. Phenomenal.
he was a good sprinter but could control the speed seemed to float
One of my favorite discipline in the Olympics. It's mesmerizing to see that WR yellow line that no one seems to get even close
One of the greatest world records. Edwards rewrote the accepted body type in that he was small and very fast, rather than the more prevalent taller jumpers. A fine ambassador for the sport too.
18/04/23 here. Still the world record by 8 cm. Nobody has been over 18m since 2019. A mind boggling record.
I remember sitting and watching this with my parents, we were all cheering like mad in the living room like fools. What a great moment in sports history.
25 years ago today: Still standing a quarter of a century later! Iconic world record of real substance. Jonathan Edwards deserves more credit and to be held in higher esteem. Arguably the greatest single achievement by a British athlete!
Agree with you Giles. Very intelligent and articulate man as well. Way ahead of his time.
That and the likes of Daley Thompson breaking the decathlon world record as well as winning gold in the Los Angeles 84 Olympic games. Sally Gunnel also doesn't get enough credit. It's a pity her world record only lasted a couple of years.
Magic!!! Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy
Great moment for a great athlete. A real inspiration for us all. Amazing.
Absolutely mesmerizing. One of the most beautiful athletic performances of all time.
When the best athlete in the competition breaks the WR in the first round the others know it’s going to be a hard day, when he does it again in the second round you may as well pack your bags and go home.
This is still the world record. Very impressive technique from an athlete in his absolute prime.
Amazing venue for such a jump. I have been lucky enough to long jump at that stadium. Never get tired watching him fly into the sand. He makes it look far too easy. Happy Birthday Jonathan. Such an incredible athlete and now a great commentator.
+Nick Moger thanks. his jumping defies gravity the more you watch the jumps.
what is it about that stadium? Altitude? I noticed the women's world record is from that same competition so it must be perfect for it
Jonathan Edwards is absolutely flying down that runway with abandon. Riveting.
And they say white people cant jump
Not necessarily- Robert Emmiyan in the long jump, Patrik Sjöberg in the high jump, and of course Edwards here in the triple jump. These other 2 guys mentioned are extremely close to the world records in their events. And even pole vault is classed as a 'jump' event by IAAF, and there you have guys like Sergey Bubka and Renaud Lavillenie.
This is the perfect triple jump. It must be an amazing feeling when everything comes together like that. Awesome.
watch his one in Nice - its even longer - albeit with an illegal wind speed
@@BipoIarbear He jumped further in the 96 olympic triple jump than the 2000 olympic final which he won
Jonathan Edward's feat on this day was impressive, but Paul Dickinson's superior commentary was the icing on the cake. No one comes close when it comes to athletic's/sport's commentary and I was sad to hear him call it a day a few years ago. Happy retirement Paul.
Yes an absolutely great bloke and commentated on some of my favourite sporting events.
Imperial system: 60 adult feet and one quarter of an inch.
Metric system: 18 meters and 29 centimeters.
29 years on and the record still stands.
His second jump was absolutely perfect - the best triple jump ever!!! ...and his world record lasts now for more than 28 years...! Chapeau, Mr. Edwards - great job! 😳
Jonathan was poetry in motion at times but he often had us on tenterhooks getting through the qualification rounds!
For years, he wouldn't jump on Sundays. Back then he was always going to be an also ran, but something clicked. Measure out 60 feet. It's just incredible.
2022 and still not beaten 🏴
I was watching this on the telly as it happened! Absolutely fantastic!
Proverbs 16:8
Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues without right.
I'd describe myself as a sports fanatic. Travelled to champions league finals, rugby world cups, golf the open champs, seen ronnie osullivan in full flow. But the thing about athletics that really captures my imagination is that it's pure sport, man against man, simply body against body the best is a perfect specimen. And Edward's record jump was and is still my favourite sporting moment. And to think he even jumped 18.43 but wind was illegal. Remember hearing rumours at the time, that in the gym, Edward's was leg lifting about 40lbs more than the best sprinters of the era. He looked so normal, average but was anything but.
Absolutely fantastic it looks effortless. A great athlete
A quarter of a century later and this record still stands.
For perspective, Bob Beamon's insane long jump record at the 1968 Olympics, which was undoubtedly aided by the altitude, stood for 23 years before it was broken by Mike Powell. Powell's records has stood ever since (29 years).
Edwards's record here is very impressive.
20 years ago today and he still holds the record! Legend!
+Ebiye Jeremy Udo-Udoma Christian Taylor 18.21m :) it's only matter of time when Taylor breaks this record
+intersanctum Possibly. But if he doesn't pull it off then the record might stand for another decade for all we know.
This record may last for anther 50 years
+Gary Hamilton He hasn't beat it yet. Your hat maybe safe for another few year.
I was 13 at the time, watching whilst on holiday in Newquay, Cornwall. I knew it was incredible then, but all these years later, seeing it again for the first time since, I believe, reinforces what I knew back then.
Brilliant video, brilliant commentary. Love the fist pump @ 18secs. One of my go-to videos. Thanks for posting.
He glides and looks so fleet footed, a truly memorable achievement.
Can you imagine adding more than a foot to the world record? That’s totally insane.
There is a beautiful fluid and poetic feel when watching this, particularly in slo-mo.
The fact this still stands even today makes you wonder if it will ever be broken
That will never be topped for me as a childhood memory , the previous record had stood for so long and he broke it twice on the same day one of the best athletic displays of all time
jamie ape - The previous record was his own set only a few weeks before. The one before that I think you mean
Great Athlete. Nice bloke
Great commentary
Reminds me of Bob Beamon in 1968, dont remember it- I was just turned 4.y.o.)but I have seen Joathan jumps 1000X later. Same crazy achievement:) Good Bless Jonathan, and thank you for the Triple Jump History. You're the MAN!
Madness that nearly 30 years later still a record😊
The look on his face at the start of the 2nd jump…the nerves have gone, he’s relaxed, happy, he knows something special is coming…
I was only 8 years old but I still remember. Athletics was always on in our house. Amazing.
2021 and they're struggling to jump over 17m
Love the roar in the stadium when the audience notices the length.
@@xsitegaming1
...then the stunned silence when you realized hers was bigger.
Not only is triple jump crazy in itself! To be able to run full speed and transfer that into 3 steps! But my man jumped 60 ft! That nuts, a legend
You know it's impressive when he makes it look so easy.
Amazing just Amazing... Jonathan Edwards the coolest guy in athletics
Its EXACTLY 60 feet...(and 1/4 of an inch)
Emotion is getting to this man from Newcastle upon Tyne. Born in London, brought up in Devon. Lol made me laugh. Huge respect for this guy tho
This is a record that will NEVER be broken. Ever.
christian taylor is capable of further. he jumped 18.21 last year and is still young, he is going to break it as long as he doesn't get a career ending injury
It'll go at some point. Taylor might do it. Nobody could get close to Johnson's 400m record for a long time but it's gone now.
Oh it will, and since Edwards is now a sports commentator he may be the guy to call it. I wonder how he'll react, but knowing him I'm sure it'll be with the same humility and respect that was the hallmark of his career.
Saw it live on the telly. Unforgettable!
remember watching this as a kid. Absolutely effortless, non of that rolling around in the sand they do now lol
Simplicity at its best. It looks like he's just gliding across the runway. Some triple jumpers today, as great as they are, don't look as awesome as Jonathan Edwards did. Would love to have seen Christian Taylor and Jonathan Edwards challenging each other.
The gasps from the crowd on both jumps are great.
christian taylor watches this everyday.
That 2 to 3rd steps Jonathan, perhaps made it.. it "clicks" really hard on the deck..what an achievement:)
He made it look so so so easy. Cannot believe that's 25 years ago.
Watched this jump for the first time in years............. best jumper with rhythm I've seen in a long time!!! Ummmm I wonder if I still hold the standing jump record from junior athletics in Runcorn UK , 1978 😁
Hard to believe that after 25 years this is still the world record for the triple jump
Wins the competition hands own with his first jump.
Grinds them into a pulp on his second!
I remember watching this having been sent home from school at the ripe old age of 10
I've just found out but Jonathan had a degree in physics and I bet that has something to do with his perfect technique and a WR that has stood for 26 years.
He wisely quickly exited that comp. Otherwise he might have gone much further still and then questions might have been asked as to whether or not he was a human-alien hybrid.
2024 and still stands. Jonathan trained at Gateshead and it’s only two miles away. Steve Cram only a couple of miles away too.
25 years and counting. 32 cm further than anyone else. What an incredible WR this is.
Yep, this is like Bolts records, they’ll stand for decades. Now they’re both not around it just emphasises how incredible these records are.
The Gasps from the crowd. Still the record as 2019 comes to an end.
I remember watching this amazing spectacle, Johnathan was untouchable it's as simple as that, dont forget he nearly didn't compete because of his church faith might get in the way that weekend. So glad he did and his record still stands 29 year later
Don’t forget he jumped a wind assisted 18.43m at the European Cup in the same year. He had perfect technique.
pause at 1:16 AMAZING
Ahhh back in the day when I was video Matt 🤝🤝
Technically perfect too. What a jumper 🔥
18+ meters in 3 leaps !! This is a human !!
That jump was super impressive
he makes it look effortless
Jonathan was the most talented athlet, great great!!!
Still holds the record to this day
Crack crack snap. My shins when I tried triple.
25 years and still the world record
Qué elegancia en la carrera y en la ejecución del salto. Y qué elegancia en el comportamiento posterior, en la celebración. La humildad del campeón, en todos los deportes, ha ido sustituyéndose cada vez más por la prepotencia del superego.
Play the clip at x0.25 speed and listen to the lovely sound effect when Mr Edwards takes the third step of the first jump 😂
Can we get a longer measuring stick please? The stress on the legs doing this must be incredible.
He was jumping massive that whole year including a marginaly illegal 18.43 metres which will be a tough distance to ever be beaten.
Fantastic!
Absolute Magic!
He made his 18m+ jumps look so easy. But I find that seems to be the way with most world records. Whoever does one just seems to be in that effortless relaxed zone like they could have gone faster or farther.
I have always thought that Jonathan's ankles were made of alloy steel. Lol
Killed the competition in the first round awesome
Coincidence, I come here because Pedro Pichardo won the gold on Tokio Olympics, and checked that Jonathan Edwards set the world record precisely on this day 26 years ago...!
I figure you're good when you land beyond where the ruler ends.
Amazing!
Evecuted the thousands of hours of work perfectly. Excellence personified.
How cool it must be to land so far beyond the final distance marker in the sand pit. Only Beamon compares.
I saw this as it happened and it was brilliant!!!
We know you watched it. You told us two years before you posted this comment.
He makes it look so easy, the smoothest of all triple jumpers. His speed was amazing here, he has to be a 10.2 sprinter. Not sure anyone can exceed his performance here.
He was a 10.4s sprinter, but his ability to accelerate quickly up to top speed was the the most impressive aspect of his 100m races, and the most important when translating over the the TJ.
.....great stuff....and a really nice guy....
He actually flying.
I never tire of Paul Dickenson's expertly executed commentary. Different class.
