  • The Weimar Republic was a time of great social and artistic advances, but shaky politics and a disastrous economy made it ripe for the rise of National Socialism - the Nazis. Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933, which brought an end to the Weimar Republic. As part of his swift project of cultural eradication, books were burned and people contrary to the regime, or who simply did not fit the Nazi’s ideal of the “Aryan” race, were arrested, murdered or forced to flee Germany. In our last film we explore the effects of the rise of the Nazis, and Weimar’s legacy.
These six films formed the introduction to the Philharmonia’s concert series Weimar Berlin: Bittersweet Metropolis in 2019. Watch the whole series here: • Weimar Berlin: Bitters...

What a fabulous series. I just watched all 6 episodes in one sitting. So very educational and entertaining. Kudos to the Philharmonia for having created it. It's sending me back to my bookshelves to re-read a number of books.

Keep coming back to this series - such a treat every time! Mr. Salonen's commentary is invaluable here - really informative and insightful. Is there a way to purchase it digitally or get a physical copy? Would hate to see it disappear from TH-cam one day...

You wouldn't happen to have footage of Dimitri Shostakovich would you? When he went to New York on the Lermontov cruise ship in the early 70's, I was on that ship. My mother and I were invited to dine at the Captains table and I was seated beside Mr Shostakovich. I was only six at the time. After dinner we watched Swan Lake performed by the Bolshoi Ballet Company.
