We’ve since moved to different states but still coordinate vacations to pick up where we left off. Another interesting mine explore. A friend and I went into a mine in Arizona once and hundreds of bats came swarming out. It was just a small mine, nothing compared to the ones you find.

I think that the way the bats were circling the bottom of the shaft, that it was just a sump and no drifts. Thanks for watching and commenting!😄

Those bit of string hung off plugs were for surveying. Sometimes they would use a wire. Quite often the string would be weighted with a small rock or a half dozen nails to stop any breeze swinging it about.
Thanks for doing the search. It's been a while, but I do remember the article. It's fun to look up information on newspaper stories from long ago. You can look up names of the old miners that you find written in the acetylene soot as well if you have the first and last names. Thanks for the comment!🤗😄

Hi Mick. Yes, these workings go all over the place. I think the straight pieces of track often got repurposed. The custom bent pieces not so much. Maybe some went for the war effort?

I bet if you had a hammer you would hammer out danger and hammer out a warning too 😉 So many bats in there, at least they didn't bother you too much, what an awesome mine though, a shame you couldn't find the other ladder to get all the way down but I guess that's how it goes with abandoned mines right. Hello Tom and Julie, So, I got a text from a friend this week asking if I had ever seen your channel. The rails on the ladder beneath the windlass did not seem to be appreciably worn. Most of the rock had to have gone down. The shaft did not appear to have ever had guide rails in it. Be nice to see how they operated a hoist in there without chewing up the timbers. Any clues topside?
Hi Dave. I think you're correct that everything, for the most part, was worked downward. I didn't show the collar area, but there is a large waste pile starting near the collar. There is no headframe, but there are some equipment mounts. With that big three compartment shaft, I'm sure there was a hoist that maybe got reused somewhere else after this mine. I don't know why the guides aren't chewed up. You probably know more than I do about that. The mine is fairly low, so I don't think there was a lower haulage adit. I hope your friend likes the channel. Thanks for the comment!😊

I find the newspapers the most fascinating because they let us see a window to the people and times the mine was in operation. There is a listing in the upper right corner (above the Hupmobile ad) that references a legal complaint from the "7th day of June AD 1917"
Yes, newspapers are fun to see. I used to take a lot more photos of them when we found them. I would then enhance and zoom in on them on a computer to be able to read the stories. 😄

I wonder if that heavy thing was used as a counter weight for the ore cart when it was empty. when they pulled out of the mine they just cut the rope and left it at the bottom. Maybe??

Lots of artifacts! I can picture Tom down there assembling explosive boxes. I kept looking for survey marks or tape and saw none. I also looked for air and water pipe and saw none. No sign of electric either. Thanks for the explanation on the three piece hand steel Tom. I didn't see any carbide cans. So watching this explore I get the idea this mine was lit by candles and lanterns. I also get the idea the drilling was all done by hand. Strangely there were dust masks. Maybe from a later date? Possibly while removing the rails for the WW2 effort? This mine is so interesting! Thanks Tom and Julie!
Hi William. This is one of several mines that I have been in where I wished I had a tack hammer and some four penny nails. I could have put together at least three full dynamite boxes here. I get the feeling that much of the steel was taken from this mine either for reuse elsewhere or for the war effort. There was nothing near the top of the shaft except or a huge waste rock pile. Not even a headframe. There were definitely a lot of candle pick marks and also the two candle shelves. Thanks for watching and for the interesting comment. Glad that you liked this one.😄

Hi Paul. I'm pretty sure that today you could not find the quality and full dimension lumber like what is in this mine at any price. The old growth timber is practically knot free and of superb quality. The value of this amount of lumber in a shaft that is hundreds of feet deep is mind-boggling. Thanks for the comment!👍😊

Found the following about the caustic soda. Edison Primary batteries were 10" high and 6" in diameter. They used amalgamated zinc and copper-oxide elements submerged in caustic soda. The caustic soda was mixed with water and covered with oil to prevent evaporation. Each battery produced 0.8 volts.

Hi Gary. The pick marks are from a small portable candle holder that had a spike or pick on it so it could be poked into a timber to hold it and free your hands. There are often many of these marks in a well-used location like they were here at the shaft where the ore from the cars was loaded into the shaft bucket. There was also a permanent candle shelf in this area, too. Thanks for the comment!😊

I don't know why the guides aren't chewed up. You probably know more than I do about that. The mine is fairly low, so I don't think there was a lower haulage adit.

I find the newspapers the most fascinating because they let us see a window to the people and times the mine was in operation. There is a listing in the upper right corner (above the Hupmobile ad) that references a legal complaint from the "7th day of June AD 1917"
Yes, newspapers are fun to see. I used to take a lot more photos of them when we found them. I would then enhance and zoom in on them on a computer to be able to read the stories. 😄

I wonder if that heavy thing was used as a counter weight for the ore cart when it was empty. when they pulled out of the mine they just cut the rope and left it at the bottom. Maybe??

Lots of artifacts! I can picture Tom down there assembling explosive boxes. I kept looking for survey marks or tape and saw none. I also looked for air and water pipe and saw none. No sign of electric either. Thanks for the explanation on the three piece hand steel Tom. I didn't see any carbide cans. So watching this explore I get the idea this mine was lit by candles and lanterns. I also get the idea the drilling was all done by hand. Strangely there were dust masks. Maybe from a later date? Possibly while removing the rails for the WW2 effort? This mine is so interesting! Thanks Tom and Julie!
Hi William. This is one of several mines that I have been in where I wished I had a tack hammer and some four penny nails. I could have put together at least three full dynamite boxes here. I get the feeling that much of the steel was taken from this mine either for reuse elsewhere or for the war effort. There was nothing near the top of the shaft except or a huge waste rock pile. Not even a headframe. There were definitely a lot of candle pick marks and also the two candle shelves. Thanks for watching and for the interesting comment. Glad that you liked this one.😄

Hi Paul. I'm pretty sure that today you could not find the quality and full dimension lumber like what is in this mine at any price. The old growth timber is practically knot free and of superb quality. The value of this amount of lumber in a shaft that is hundreds of feet deep is mind-boggling. Thanks for the comment!👍😊

That was a fun one. You’re right the lumber was amazing! A lot of board feet in that one. Tom, do you know off hand when the carbide lamps were first introduced? They sure burned a lot of candles. That was a fun explore in a solid mine.

Found the following about the caustic soda.
Edison Primary batteries were 10" high and 6" in diameter. They used amalgamated zinc and copper-oxide elements submerged in caustic soda. The caustic soda was mixed with water and covered with oil to prevent evaporation. Each battery produced 0.8 volts.

I had never heard of a Hupmobile. Comparing the picture in the newspaper you had to what I found online that looked to me to be the mid 1920’s.

You mentioned pick marks several times on timbers holding the candle fixtures. Why are they there/what do they represent?
Hi Gary. The pick marks are from a small portable candle holder that had a spike or pick on it so it could be poked into a timber to hold it and free your hands. There are often many of these marks in a well-used location like they were here at the shaft where the ore from the cars was loaded into the shaft bucket. There was also a permanent candle shelf in this area, too. Thanks for the comment!😊
