    Thank you so much. I’m so annoyed b/c my doctor gave me NO exercises to do and told me NOT to go to physical therapy. I can tell my foot/toe are struggling to re-learn how to function normally (like the muscles are stiff and have gone to sleep or something) so I will be trying all of these!

      I've encouraged the orthos where I go (who have a PT and OT department) to start writing white papers for their peers and speaking at conferences to tell other orthos the importance of working with PTs and OTs and how it is essential to the healing process and getting back to a fully functioning, pain-free state.

    I thought you very clear in your directions and pictures! Was very helpful to me. I am almost at week #4 and pain has not been unusual. Much of time, not at all, and sometimes it feels warm and itchy. I was able to take showers after 2 weeks and that helped a lot. Also had the hammertoe with my bunion and 3 of the toes got splints as they were curving too much towards the big toe. I use a large zip lock (I think quart size) filled with clear Karo syrup and then put inside a pillowcase. It freezes quickly but is nice and flexible so I can semi wrap it around my foot. I actually have two of these. I was hoping I would be driving after my 4 week appt in a few days, but maybe not based on your video. What a dramatic difference when I look at the Xrays! The other foot will be done once I can put all my weight on the foot that had surgery. I realize how much I had to depend on standing on one foot. Thanks for taking the time to video this.

    Doctors denied my pt even after I asked multiple times. I know have hip issues because I don’t walk flat. I’ll never be able to wear heels. I’m young and unmarried so this bothers me. This video is more help then any doctor gave me.

      Wow, that's awful. You had bunion surgery?
      What kind of doctor refuses to allow a patient to go to physical therapy? Doctors take an oath to "do no harm". It sounds like their "decision" has done you harm.

      Good! I'm glad it helped. Your surgeon should have given you the initial exercises for you to do. I've told my surgeons they should write white papers for their field and/or speak at events to teach other doctors about the importance of the OT or PT and exercises for recovery. Many doctors just don't educate patients on what to do for a successful recovery.

Was wearing the boot and was concerned about reversing any healing by doing anything so now I need to try to get back to normal walking. Good! At minimum, your surgeon or their physician's assistant should be showing you - actually demonstrating & helping you to do - the exercises they want you to do, and to teach you the proper way to do them. You can also show them my exercises in my video to see if that's what they want you to start doing now, or to at least get a date to start doing them.

Had left bunion 2 years ago and got along ok...a little stiff yet and big toe is raised and laps a bit over next toe but I keep exercising biking etc...really no pain. Another Dr did right toe a year ago...I wore spacer to avoid the lapping over possibility. But now by big toe is always raised off the ground and having pain in ball of foot. The PT told me to do the exercises every day. :-) I also had my second foot done in early June. I haven't had as much swelling or pain with foot #2 as I did with foot #1. As a result, I've been walking on it too much and have not realized that since the big toe still doesn't bend properly while walking, I compensate for that by walking in such a way that the front/top part of the foot has been hurting as if it is bruised. I emailed the PT. He is the person who got it right and told me this. I need to walk more consciously and probably walk less / rest more. And I need to do those exercises. I've been pretty good about doing the one with the green band daily. I still do that exercise on both feet!

      It's probably still a little too early to start PT. I'm more concerned that your surgeon has had bad experiences with his patients getting PT. The PT I've always gone to is part of the same ortho clinic - same practice & building - and he actually works mainly with athletes. I think it was a good 3 or 4 months after surgery that I started PT. Start talking to all of your athlete friends and find out which PTs they've been to who they trust. Then try to get a referral from the doc.

    I'm 15 weeks po lapiplasty bunionectomy. Is it too late for me to get my rom back? I'm really bummed about how restricted my toe is, and my doctor never told me about PT or even recommended it, but I would really appreciate your opinion on this

    Great exercises for after surgery but not after Arthrodesis. I have no movement left in the joint.

    I couldn’t (still can’t) afford physiotherapy, I got my left foot bunion operated in March of 2021. My big toe won’t flex in wedges/ heels and my big toe knuckle won’t bend and I really want the flexibility back so I can enjoy wearing the shoes I love to wear. Will these exercises help me in my case or would I need physio?

      I'd suggest to start doing the exercises now as much as your foot will allow. Also see if you can find other channels here on YT hosted by physical therapists who reply to comments. If you find any of their videos about PT for feet, ask them questions in the comments sections of those videos.

    When to start Post Op Exercise for the toe?

    • @gloryb-tv
      @gloryb-tv  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Talk to your doctor about exercise. Mine has a physician's assistant who first gave me a few exercises to do and told me when to start. When my first foot wasn't doing well nor progressing quickly enough, the doctor sent me to physical therapy, which is where I got these exercises. It's kind of a process and depends on how fast your foot is healing. That's why you need for your physician or PA to inform you when it's time to start exercising the foot.

    At what week post surgery do I do these exercises? I am two and a half weeks post surgery 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

    • @gloryb-tv
      @gloryb-tv  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The first two exercises I was given by my surgeon's PA during a follow up appointment. I think I started those about 3 or 4 weeks after surgery. The rest of the exercises from the physical therapist were started later -- maybe 6 or 8 weeks after surgery.

      It takes a year or slightly more to get the foot back to normal activity. Really. I had my second foot done 6 weeks ago! This time the doc put a pin into my second toe - it's actually sticking out! - and that gets removed on Friday. Believe me, the younger you are when you have bunion surgery the stronger you are to manage the physical interruption. You need a strong upper body while you're recuperating.
      Did your doctor offer to get you into physical therapy? That would be a good idea. A PT will focus on your specific physical challenges; what movement gives you pain; which types of sports and other activities you want to be able to do without pain; etc.

      GloryB-TV well actually my doctor didn’t prescribe physical therapy. Only after some complications and me complaining the docter prescribed physical therapy. I went twice a week for 4 months and my physio therapist ended up ending my treatment sessions because he didn’t see any improvement. When I reach the one year mark I’ll probably go to another doctor to get a second opinion. Still hoping my foot will improve when I try these exercises at home..

      You need a different PT who doesn't give up! My PT specializes in sports injuries. He works with teenagers on up. Start asking around - your friends, coworkers, your parents friends -- who has worked with a really good physical therapist? And then, "Why do you think they're good at PT?" You want to hear that the PT knows the human body and works with patients + that knowledge to get you pain-free.

      Hi Caro. I had my first bunion surgery in November 2019 and it took me 15 months to basically get back to normal. Everything is still a bit stiff and I do still get some swelling. Everyone is different in their healing times. I just had my second foot done 6 weeks ago and I will at least know what to expect this time as far as a timeline is concerned and anything I can do to move the healing process along. I just wish the surgeons would let us know what to expect!

      @@gloryb-tv i know this is older post/video, this is exactly what happened to me, bunion surgery on 1/17/2022 on left foot for big toe and second toe, second toe with a pin, sticking out, doctor took the pin out on 4th week, now on 7th week, the big toe is fine, second toe is still hurting. I saw doctor on 7th week 3/10/2022, he said i must start walking right, but second toe hurt a lot and cannot bend at all. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO RECOVER /PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR SECOND TOE???? PLEASE ADVISE, I am a very active person and i kind of regret the surgery.

    • @gloryb-tv
      @gloryb-tv  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's different for each person. The swelling needs to be gone (3 to 7 months) and the shoes with heels need to feel comfortable for you.

    This bunion surgery ruined my grandmother's health. She lost the strength of her big toe and stepped crookedly, as if stepping on eggs, and it made her back deform and she was hunchy, with back pain, with her back deformed to this day.

    I just got Hallux Rigidus surgery 4 weeks ago. They should remove the pin in 2 weeks. Doctor said I need physical therapy. I just found out, I I don’t have health insurance anymore. So this video will be great cause I could save money. Dr. said that in three months I can be wearing heels. he also stated try not to be on them 24/7 Only worm for special occasion.
