    I have to say that I love all of your videos and you have inspired me greatly in my journey beginning Bonsai. Thank you for all that you do and all of the videos and information you have passed on. You have developed a legacy that will last generations to come!

    Love your weightless photography. :D The start with you in the helmet took me by surprise. Haven't had such a good laugh in ages. Keep up the good work. I'm going to be starting an apple bonsai from seed and looking for another Banyan from the very reasonably priced bonsai shop (in someone's backyard) down the road.

    I love aloe I just had my oldest bloom this year (4 years old) and never thought of making bonsais out of them. I have several pups that are a little bigger than the size of the one you purchased at the nursery. You’ve inspired me to try and start a few bonsais of my own!

    Entertaining and informative as always. If you use a sponge to dab on the paint thinner and a hard bristled toothbrush to flick on the paint, you'll get a great ceramic look without noticeable brush strokes.

    hey Nigel,
    been watching all your videos, trying to catch up on all the great Bonsai info you put out..
    the amount of great content in you videos mixed with the relaxing sounds of the birds, chickens, trains and occasional squirl make all your videos really interesting to watch..
    and its really great you show so many updates on all your trees, good and the bad,
    it was sad to see your weeping willow suffer the set back it had, hope it goes on to make a good recovery and the possibility of what may become...
    and the 3D pots are great. would love to print some myself one day..
    new tech in bonsai is something i didn't think id see..
    look forward to your next vid,
    hope you have some good questions to fire back at the bonsai crew..
    all the best for 2018

    Looks stormy outside! The Aloe leaves can be easily removed by hand without harming the tree, you just have to wait long enough. Each leaf has a lifespan. I think part of the reason they hold onto their leaves for a long time is because Aloes are desert plants and are designed to conserve as much water and energy as possible. ~ Those miniature pots are looking amazing!

    Not sure I can agree: I keep my too-little-leaf ficus at a western faced window in winter with quite low light, and it grows quite well. But then again the leaves on mine are _much_ smaller than on yours. Maybe I have another variety, which deals better with the dark situation in winter.

    Hello Mr. Saunders,
    nice performance ;)
    I don't know, if someone else did mentioned it, but I just want to share my thoughts...
    I really do like the idea of the Canada-Arm, but am also afraid of it's development in the future. You made it out of wood and wrapped it in plastic and put it in a very moist environment. I guess that the wood is not able to dry out properly and mold will form soon and with the heavy spotlight at the end, the screws at the angle could just slip out of the soft wood, when you use the arm and it crashes onto your trees. Maybe not jet, but in one, two, or three years...
    Maybe a steel- or aluminum-construction is an option?
    I really don't want to be pessimistic, just want you to think about it :)
    I hope everything goes fine!
    Best regards.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I can find a aluminum driveshaft from a truck, I'll update it! I was thinking I can use the universal joint from them also to mount it to the wall. I'll keep my eye on the arm, the wood in the room is quite old now and it is in good shape still. I do want to continue styling the room like the ISS inside! Thanks, the crow is my favorite bird!

    • @Merkenau
      @Merkenau 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone They are expensive, but robust, so why not...
      (what about T-beam shaped profiles?)
      Or you find an robotic arm from an automobile-production line, which can also be remote controlled, print pots and water your plants while you're on holiday ;)
      Indeed, smart birds!
      But I'm a bit envious about your blue jays in your backyard.

    the pot looks great, hard to believe it is plastic. The only thing I would recommend is a higher gloss finish. I actually tend to like the more matte finish on ceramic but I think the higher gloss would make the plastic look more believable. Just personal opinion, either way excellent job!

      @TheBonsaiZone  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Nigel, great video as always !
    Concerning the Aloe forest,
    The yellow flowered Aloes are Aloe vera, and this species does not form stems,
    so I think creating tree like plants with those will be difficult...

    Could you do a video of all the plants you have? I mean dude, gotta have a decent greenhouse or something you could show off.
    What about types of Grow lights? I have a multicolored LED do those work as far as imitating UV?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Nicholas, I have about two hundred trees on the go and they are always crowded on the benches or in the small greenhouse or in my plant room. It is very difficult to video them and actually see the tree! I will be working on the bonsai benches over the next few years to get them spaced out in more of a display setting. Here is a good article on the top picks for grow lights....

    I would like to know how you will adjust the weight of the plastic pot against that of the plant. Bonsais could become top heavy!!

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of my trees have a nice flat radial root base and will be fairly stable in the shallow pots. The weight of the soil should help also. If it is a problem, I'll place some stones on top of the soil to keep the tree and pot from tipping over.

    With all the super glue you're using to put together your 3-D parts, do you know that baking soda will instantly set the glue? Just a pinch of the baking soda, sprinkled on the glue joint instantly sets that joint.

      @@TheBonsaiZone This is the way luthiers repair the string slots in the bone of a guitar. If a string's slot is warn too deep, they'll use thick super glue to build it back up.....drop of glue; pinch of baking soda. Another drop of glue; another pinch of baking soda.....until there's enough build up to shape with their files. This is also how they would adjust the bone to put the strings at proper distance to the frets for the player so they would not rattle on the frets and cause ragged sounds.

      I keep removing the lower leaves to keep the top a little lighter. The Aloe will then grow vertical instead of flopping over.

    Hey Nigel. Can you tell us about the 3d printer? I think you have previously mentionned you use the one at a library? How much does it cost to use?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 3D printer in the makers space at the library is free to use if you have a library card. You do have to pay for the plastic used. My small pots are about 4 dollars and my largest was 10. The largest size you can make is a 203 mm cube. They do like you to keep print times to around 4 hours, but some can be left to run over night. My largest pot took 7 hours to print.

    That aloe bonsai is really something special!! I have been growing aloe vera for 8 years now, and growing it that way just never occurred to me! Some serious space efficient eye candy! I just ended up either using it or giving it away. Now you've got me thinking. So from what I see from your other videos is you just keep removing the lower leaves to allow the stem to grow, and then the plant does the rest for branching the pups? That's 3 years of growth right?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Aloe was started in June of 2016 as a young plant, it has grown really well in the bonsai soil and will be due for re potting soon. Yes I just keep removing the lower leaves and the branches or pups grow naturally on the trunk. The trunk is starting to get woody near the base! Here is the original video of it and also of Joshua's Aloe bonsai that inspired me in this direction!

    How do you keep predators from getting at your chickens?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      We keep them in the coop's at night and they have a screened in area outside. When we are in the backyard (which is almost always), they are let out for the day. We have had raccoons taking away a chicken or two near dusk, so we watch them carefully until they all get settled for the night. The raccoons seem to only go for them in spring. We have lots of cats that enter the backyard, but the rooster goes after them quickly and protects his hens. Our yard is fenced in with chain link fencing. Sadly, we do loose a few chickens every year, but they just love being outside free ranging!

      It is a regular Aloe vera, in the description it says they can grow 60 to 100 cm (24 to 39 inches) tall. I have seen them at the botanical gardens with a nice woody trunk and a spreading crown. I prune off the lower leaves to keep the trunk upright and growing tall.

      Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone I have an aloe vera I've been growing for a year now. I don't see signs of a Woody trunk. It's quiet large too. So the trick is pruning off bottom leaves to expose trunk? The size of yours is really wild. You grow your plants and trees quickly!!
