I’ve watched literally thousands of videos on “how to TH-cam” over the last year since I started my channel. THIS insight is probably the single thing that will help me grow to my potential in 2025 after floundering the past few months. I’ve been planning a major shift in style/delivery this year but I couldn’t quite put my finger on exactly what I was going for that would also be realistic for me as a busy mom. Thank you so much. You explained the approach to “simple but purposeful” perfectly. Just subscribed!
LOVE THIS! Your video has just helped all of my research for my upcoming channel to come full circle. I was on the path of Dry Creek Wrangler, but I didn't understand WHY it was so appealing to me and...possibly...my audience. VERY POWERFUL! Thank you.
great video, for whoever wants to start from zero consider that: - you still do need to speak fairly well (way above average) going on a tangent is ok, adding zero value while having mmm, ahhhh, I mean... is not - YT can detect if your content can be just listened to and not watched directly, if that's the case they won't push your videos because they know you won't watch ads. so at the beginning you do need to add visuals and yes being interesting is a must
This perfectly explains something I just experienced - I've been putting effort into making videos that have more "value" and instructions as an educator... like more formal videos. I recorded audio sooooo many times polishing it up, editing out my meandering and making it all like step by step how-to. But I noticed in the analytics, that it was the times I kept the meandering yapping in there that kept people's attention (my outtros - I thought people would never be interested in my outtros where I talked off-the-cuff! It's the only part in all my vids with stable levels of engagement). And my most recent video is all just a meandering yapping mess that I spent the least time on, but apparently it's my best performing video! Thinking I will be switching up my strategy... thanks for the analysis and breaking all of this down!
Awesome, that’s what I’ve been saying! It’s not about perfect, it’s about being relatable. I year ago maybe yapping on would do less well, but now we want less polished...But still value. Good luck
Yes i adore this parts of peoples videos and will even skip to the outro if they always have them because thats the best part. Lol If the whole video is like that, im glued. Its how i talk. I tell 12 stories to tell 1.
I focus a lot on real life and being authentic and find the balance between frugality and reality because although people like the idea of old style frugality they don't always have time to do it so finding what will help others. Omg this is literally what came to me to do as a business owner and family woman. I’ve struggled to be consistent because of all I have going on so doing talking head is nearly impossible. I’ve decided to just speak on the topics while doing what I’m doing.
That’s definitely what I am doing with my channel. What you see is what you get. I just talk about what’s on my mind. Just being in front of the camera. Talking about life stuff.
I’m all for Grandpa/Grandma Style! I’ve been doing a lot more of this style without even knowing it 😂 I think of it as more documenting a process over being over produced
I once heard a comment “a channel about everything is a channel about nothing” “First you get paid for what you do, then you get paid for what you know, and eventually, if you’re lucky, you get paid for who you are.”
This reminds me a bit of Jack Hargreaves on Out of Town. His show was a mixture of talking directly to camera and talking over prerecorded footage featuring him. Feels like we've gone full circle.
Hmm Thank you very much! As a speaker and author who's reached some degree of notariety and popularity.... I'm not saying this to promote myself, not at all but at a certain point you realize in life you've arrived or made huge mistakes. I've done quite a bit of both. And after viewing this input it challenged me to keep coming back to the things that people found most popular about my experiences and stories. Often as a speaker you tend to try and be like somebody. And the more you try and be like somebody the less you are true to yourself. I'm realizing more and more that this is the kind of thing that truly interests people. I think our world is full of people accumulating data. But there's a huge mistake there. Information does not make you smarter in fact it may only fool you. Taking on friendships and lovers means forgiving and leaving a bit of danger to the whole equation. You learn compassion and loyalty by being stretched, and deciding to live outside of the realm of pure information. Being human is the connecting point and our world so often misses that need.
Well, I'm old enough to be a granddad and I've been around the planet a few times with the lines and scars to show for it. I guess I could share the stories I tell that folks find funny, fascinating, and/or educational. Now I just need to get that lazy son of mine busy and get me a few grandbabies :-) I taught him how it works when he was a boy. Maye I should remind him he just needs get busy!!!

Authentic connection is definitely important now on YT. I've been meandering as a content creator for a few years, mostly because it's taken some time for me to trust that it's ok to be completely authentic, and that what I'm feeling and hearing from God to do is relevant to SOMEBODY. That's all that matters. Personally I can't stand fast edits, or even really intricate editing unless the video is about entertainment. If it's about a message, all that editing actually takes away from the message. Interesting to watch online culture evolve. Thanks for sharing this video!
Fantastic information. Unfortunately YT demonetized out channel last month for not enough watch time despite having thousands of videos and livestreams. Sending love and warm greetings from the creeks and woodland of Missouri.
It kind of hurts my heart that you are taking what was likely just an organic evolution of a few people's personal style, and turning it into a "Strategy" for people to get lots of views with low effort. These people actually put LOTS of effort into their videos. It's just that that effort was put in decades ago, and over the course of half a century. It can be authentic and low effort because they are speaking from experience and from the heart. And, you are telling people to just fake all that for lots of views.
You'd have to be an absolute smooth brain not to follow and absorb what styles of content are currently trending if you're a content creator or thinking of being one!
@@Wanderxsociety Exactly! People who adopt this style, merely because it is touted as a way to generate lots of low-effort videos in a popular style, are not really going to have much that they REALLY want to say. It's going to just be a bunch of rambling that may or may not have any real value. I am one of those "grandpas" who tends to talk a lot. But, I do actually have a point to the side-stories and tangents that I go off onto. They really do tie in and help the listener understand the main point. And, in a video, where I can't tell what the listener already knows, I am going to be inclined to go on a lot more side stories, just to keep them in the loop. (Don't worry. I am also a former technical writer, so I know when to simply make something a completely separate video.)
Hey Gareth, thank you for the video. Can you please advise what app or program you are using to do the thing where you see your face on screen and you see your screen as well? I need something like that to do a video and I’m not sure what to use. Thank you in advance.
fast cuts are fine if that's what your audience like. If not, then you may need to tone it back a bit to increase watchtime and engagement. All about testing
What's the difference between some of those channels and a one person podcast? I mean, I love the idea and I'm thinking about using that strategy to share my thoughts and ideas about life but I think that sometimes people are alone and want to have someone listening about their life. And if they identify with that subject even better I guess

We document our life living in a small Mexican town. Both of our kids are thriving in school and athletics. Our channel is growing which is cool but I really enjoy the process of documenting our adventures
If you enjoy it then just keep doing what you are doing. But having a purpose, thread or goal for the channel can help with growth and making money. All depends what you want from creating content
Hey Gareth, we have an RV travel channel, first 4 years were random rvs and campground then we started vlogging our daily life about a year ago.. We get 5-10k views per video on this style, but it would be hard to switch to this style because we share many different vlogs in each week, not just one “grandpa” conversation. I am 60, grandpa age, but i dont think i have the wisdom to share except selling everything you own to travel in an RV full time. The hard part is being interesting, both visually and verbally. I would love to do a video where i just sit outside at a campsite and share the points of living full time in RV. Over the last 5 years we have filmed 10 years of content, haha, we could use all of that for b-roll for a grandpa vlog. Larry
people love stories and insider tips, I think you'd be surprised that content may do very well. We all undervalue our life experience. The backdrop and knowledge you share is interesting. if you wanted an extra layer you could also have POV (point of view) where you are documenting and updating on a journey.

That’s definitely what I am doing with my channel. What you see is what you get. I just talk about what’s on my mind. Just being in front of the camera. Talking about life stuff.
Awesome do you have a common thread or theme?
I’m all for Grandpa/Grandma Style! I’ve been doing a lot more of this style without even knowing it 😂 I think of it as more documenting a process over being over produced
POV is a great way to add a second layer to the vlog 😎
I once heard a comment “a channel about everything is a channel about nothing”
“First you get paid for what you do, then you get paid for what you know, and eventually, if you’re lucky, you get paid for who you are.”
Yeah I like these quotes
Thank you for making this video.
Pleasure
Such a good point..thank you this will work great I'm any neach
😎
Thank you for this! It allows to see things from a different perspective
Glad you enjoyed it!
This reminds me a bit of Jack Hargreaves on Out of Town. His show was a mixture of talking directly to camera and talking over prerecorded footage featuring him. Feels like we've gone full circle.
I guess everything comes back into fashion 😅
Great point about information vs. connection. The more we strive for truth in ourselves, the more we find it in others. Thanks for sharing 🙌
Been thinking about doing this type of content, I love the casual nature of it, while also getting across information/hot takes/educational stuff
Go for it! Keep it authentic, and don't be afraid to experiment! 😎
Thank you so much for your help, I'm growing my chanel ❤️ my beautiful souls won't let me down ❤
😊
Well, I'm old enough to be a granddad and I've been around the planet a few times with the lines and scars to show for it. I guess I could share the stories I tell that folks find funny, fascinating, and/or educational. Now I just need to get that lazy son of mine busy and get me a few grandbabies :-) I taught him how it works when he was a boy. Maye I should remind him he just needs get busy!!!
😂
How are you getting the "View Channel Stats" button. I do not have that even on my own channel.
If you are talking about the view data of other channels it’s the VidIQ plugin
@@garethlamb Thanks
Yeah, I started doing mine from the toilet. Good results but problems with the mic and echo.
😂
so much more authentic...... agree with others saying this :)
😎
Great value. I have run into your video by chance, but your style follows your message - this is real life and real advice I could get from a friend over coffee. I will definitely use it.
Glad it was helpful! 😎
Somewhat informative, minimal attention needed from the viewer. Good for background noise.
👍
Your video by far is one of the best that I’ve seen in a long time! Thank you for all of your suggestions! I think 2025 is going to be the year that I start and stick to TH-cam!
Awesome to hear! 💪
Yep! Keeping my videos organic and real to relate to ladies my age going through life after 50 👍
Awesome!
Thank you for the valuable advice Gareth, I will definitely take this onboard for my videos, and put in that second layer 🙂
Awesome! Let me know how it works out for you.
I really liked your video, i think its difficult to decide on niche and topic so i end up with a little bit of everything. Have a great day! :)
As long as there is a common thread or theme that connects them you’ll be good 😊. And if you want more help you can join our free community www.skool.com/profits
Me too, I am everywhere on subjects.
@@garethlamb thanks, ill look Into it 🎈
can i just point out that your hair looks awesome
thanks 😅
Thanks for sharing this refreshing perspective. I feel like the grandpa method suits me well.
great, I'm glad it helped
Agreed! I’ve noticed Grandpa styled talking head videos with a casual change of scenery in each video translates really well for viewers
It's definitely a good format for both creator and viewer!
Authenticity 👍🏼
😎
Thanks for the tips 👍
Glad to help 😎
Thank you for sharing ❤️
You’re welcome! 🙌

Glad it resonated.
Gold 🌞
😎
Fantastic information. Unfortunately YT demonetized out channel last month for not enough watch time despite having thousands of videos and livestreams. Sending love and warm greetings from the creeks and woodland of Missouri.
I am so sorry to hear that, keep at it though.
Thank you for this, i love watching Real life vlog nowadays
Me too, so much more authentic and relatable!
KEEP up with the great content and keep pushing through the TH-cam grind
😎
@garethlamb always willing to help other TH-camrs
It kind of hurts my heart that you are taking what was likely just an organic evolution of a few people's personal style, and turning it into a "Strategy" for people to get lots of views with low effort. These people actually put LOTS of effort into their videos. It's just that that effort was put in decades ago, and over the course of half a century. It can be authentic and low effort because they are speaking from experience and from the heart. And, you are telling people to just fake all that for lots of views.
What? He is not telling anyone to fake it for views. I feel like we did not watch the same video at all.
Grant I think you missed the point of what I was saying
You'd have to be an absolute smooth brain not to follow and absorb what styles of content are currently trending if you're a content creator or thinking of being one!
I can see what your saying like watering it down
@@Wanderxsociety Exactly!
I use Descript for these videos, but you could also use loom
@@garethlambthank you!
I came across this vlogger earlier. I was wondering if I should take my own vlog in this direction, but I like fast cuts☺️ But it's really good👌
fast cuts are fine if that's what your audience like.
Just shorter and one a topic rather than a long interview format. You can do shorter videos with someone else. Or one long one that you chop up
G'day from Australia 🇦🇺. This was a great video and information 👍. I'm really interested in doing vlogging videos in 2025. I'm going to subscribe to your channel as you seem to know your stuff.

@garethlamb ok I will most definitely check it out.
Great thanks mate!
Glad it helped 😎
Embracing the silver too. But a young person with silver hair that's interesting
since a young age 😅
Would you mind sharing how you are able to view the channel stats for other channels?
I think this was with the VidIQ plugin
I am a talking head grandpa in Thailand starting to pick up subscribers and views with no editing at all.
Awesome 🙌
Great video! Thanks for sharing ❤🙏🏽
Glad you enjoyed it!
LOVE this! Thank you :))
Glad you liked it! 😎
Great insight! What are your thoughts on improving your presentation skills. Get one on one coaching, or drama class?
If it’s something you want to do, just make sure you don’t end up creating a character. I find that you naturally get better just by doing it enough
Otimo vídeo, obrigado irmão. Ganhou um seguidor brasileiro. 😀
Obrigado! Welcome!
Thanks for this!
My pleasure!
Good stuff. Thank you!
Glad you found it useful
How did you get all grey hair and an all brown mustache?🤠🇺🇸☕️
