Came here, left a message, me and my family took a trip, moved from Connecticut to Florida, rented a 6x12 trailer my car and the 2017 Rav4, drove another 1,120 miles, my car speed was max 60 speed, I couldn't accelerate any more, because otherwise the trailer would shake..., the trip was very peaceful, and most importantly my car didn't have any wear, it withstood everything and was normal without any wear, I hope this could have helped other people guys , if you have any questions, I can answer them if you have any questions!!!

RAV4 with the 2.5 gas engine has a maximum towing capacity of 1500 pounds. The lightest trailer at Uhaul I believe is 600-700 pounds. I would not recommend towing over capacity. Sure, you might make it, but in the long run what kind of damage are you doing to the transmission, differential, etc.?

I thin U-haul check your tow vehicle capacity before renting you a trailer. If they let you tow away, then it’s probably OK on the paper. How well it tows in real life? it’s a different story.

Towed a 6x12 U-Haul cargo trailer with a 1991 Jeep Wrangler Renegade. This trailer wasn’t exceeding the capacity, otherwise they wouldn’t have sold it to us: but we were limited to loading 2/3 of the trailer. I don’t know if any of you have ever towed a long trailer with a short wheelbase suv but it isn’t fun; that trailer pushed the Jeep all around the road on corners even when it was empty. The highest id ever go with a RAV4 or Wrangler would be a 5x8.

Sunny Deng Hint: Look at the 3rd letter in the VIN on a RAV. It is classified as a truck, not a passenger car like a Crown Vic. Crossovers are trucks, not cars. Heavier duty subframes, cargo space, and suspensions differentiate the two. Just because a vehicle is unibody or front wheel drive doesn’t mean it’s a passenger car. Just because a vehicle is body on frame or rear drive doesn’t means it’s a truck. The number of cylinders or engine output means nothing.

The Rav4 is most likely 3500 pounds. So you would be able to put 1580 pounds in to be in line with the Rav4 rating. Your load was mostly furniture and part empty. Wrong, it is the operators responsibility to ensure the hitch is secure. Before you move the vehicle, despite who did the hook up, the operater must to a check to see the electrical is connected and all lights working, ensure the hairpin is in place to lock the jaws on the hitch and both chains are connected and crossed to create a basket should the hitch come off. If a person is injured or there is property damage, the liability is on the operator not the rental company.

All the argument comments about towing capacity are funny. let me clear this up.
for safety, the chassis must be able to handle the towing capacity. this is why people are able to safely tow 2 to 3X their rated capacity without the vehicle falling apart. however the other thing about towing is the TRANSMISSION !it may seem fine ....until it isn't. towing more than capacity is wearing down the transmission. the engine doesn't care much, mpg will just suffer.

You rent it, they just hook you up to whatever. You need to see the maintenance schedule on it if hauling very far, or risk losing a wheel. Stop often and check the hitch, lights and feel the wheels near the axles to see if HOT. I wouldn't have pulled with that RAV4 two blocks. If you ever saw one of those trailers take off across lanes headed for the meridian pushing car, family and dog with it....you would ask a lot of questions before starting out!

The 2024 Toyota Rav Adventure can tow 3500 pounds because it has the coolers, I assume the other gas model Ravs if properly equipped with coolers can also tow 3500 pounds. Not that I would on a daily basis, but if needed you could probably tow that amount on flat highways/roads for short periods of time. I have a 25 Foot Panga Boat/trailer/outboard/gear - weighs about 2800 pounds total. I tow that with a 2017 Kia Sedona 276 HP front wheel drive minivan and it pulls that load like it was almost nothing. Good to know I have the capable Toyota Rav as a backup in case I need it for towing short distance, like the minivan breaks down 5 miles from home. Of course the trailer would have brakes. Your situation may be different, read the manual before you tow.

I have towed this with a 16 Edge SEL, aftermarket class 3 hitch, rated for 7500lbs. The combined weight (trailer + cargo) was close to 4000lbs, with an additional 5 pasengers on board, and it pulled it very easily, even over hilly highways (maintained 60mph all the way easily, with plenty of passing power). I monitored the temps, and transmission got up to 230 tops, which is normal (also it comes with a stock transmission cooler built in).
      My takeaways:
      1. As long as you know what you are doing (plan your route, distribute the weight correctly, calculate proper tongue weight, make sure that your tires and brakes ( especially trailer brakes ) are good to go, drive sane ), you will make it without problems.
      2. Most vehicles are severely underrated for towing, in the US. US tow ratings are made for liability & marketing (to push you off to get a truck / bigger vehicle).
You can check the UK trailer ratings for reference (which would give you close to the actual tow ratings for your vehicle, tested under extreme conditions(grade, high temp, fully loaded with ac on etc)) (Edge is rated for towing 4500LB in the UK).
If you tow at the US rated max capacity (3500lbs), you wouldn't even notice it.
      3. Airlift rear suspension upgrade, WDH, additional transmission cooler, LT Truck tires(eg: Good Year Wrangler Workhorse HT) etc can all be added to make your towing experience even better.
      4. Earlier maintenance intervals. And if parts do wear out in the long run, replace them. Still costs way less than a new car.

Anything can tow anything it's just how much damage you are willing to do to the car. Heat in the transmission is the problem. Driving on the highway is fine but stop and go traffic and hills is where the heat starts to build up.

Not that it matters much, but I think what you have there is a 5x10 trailer. They have barn doors where as the 6x12 has a roll up door at the back. Personally
I’d keep both hands on the wheel if I was exceeding my vehicles gross weight and I was driving 60. Save the phone camera part. That will hurt you if things
    go tits.

google your cars make and model and then type Tow rating on it. if the tow rating is higher than the trailers weight and loaded weight then yes. but to answer your question yes it can you can tow up to 3,500 pounds including trailer weight.

  • @Jhansen136
    @Jhansen136 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Honestly, its not that bad of an idea for short distance and driving conservativly. The 2018 rav 4 adventure can tow up to 2700 lbs with the same engine and transmission. The main difference is that the 2016 model doesn't have transmission fluid cooler or an engine oil cooler. If you were to add those you'd be in good shape. If you were to add those, you might need to upgrade your alternator to ensure you supply enough power. :)

Every time I see someone filming while driving I die a bit on the inside. For everyone that says " I am good at multitasking, I can text/film/call/whatever while driving" ... NO YOU CAN'T. maybe you don't see how obviously bad you drive (because you are distracted) but you still put everyone at risk.

So what’s the point of this video? Do you say you don’t trust your car towing at 6 x 12 but then, you contradict yourself saying that your car towed it well. At U-Haul you are asked what type of vehicle you have to toe with. The computer will then compare your car make and model and year to the trailer will be towing. You take for responsibility for whatever happens after that. If your car gets damaged for example transmission because it overheated, you are responsible

Too much trailer for that vehicle; It's not only the tongue weight and the tow weight that matters, but a 6x12 trailer in windy conditions needs a fairly substantial vehicle to keep it safe from having the tail wag the dog.
I have a single-axle 6x12 Haulmark and yeah, when unloaded, even my Honda Fit can dolly it around the lot, But I wouldn't load that trailer, at 1400 pounds empty lighter than the U-Haul, and load it up with yet another 1400 pounds of goods and tow it with a RAV4 or a CR-V. Maybe if it were loaded with bulky items that were not heavy, like 400 pounds of of lightweight furniture. Even then, you'll be hitting the max tow capacity of a RAV4.
