I was in elementary school in Alexandria at the time and I remember a long (for a first grader) period of time where we couldn't go out to recess and there were tarps over the parent's pick-up line. Kids who usually walked to school were not allowed to anymore. We didn't know what was going on but I can only imagine how scary that must have been for our parents and teachers.
When I was in high school I worked at Koons Honda/GMC right next to the Sunoco where one victim was shot. I was a delivery prep guy, which included re-arranging the lot constantly. I heard that shot. Couldve as just as easily been me. Very sobering thought.

I’ll never forget this. I remember being nervous to pump gas even though I wasn’t in the area. Absolutely terrifying. My sister told me about a news story where this gas station attendant in the DC area, said that he was outside all the time pumping gas because most people were using the full service pump because they were too afraid to get out of their cars. I was so relieved when they were caught. My heart goes out to all the victims and family members.
This was and is still terrifying. We can be doing literally anything and be targets without knowing it. Horrible. Also it being only a year after 9/11, we were still reeling from it. Especially since DC was directly attacked as well. People suck they really do.

I've seen a few comments asking about how they were caught. Lots of information was coming from different places while at the same time. Malvo's fingerprints were found at a liquor store in Alabama where one person was shot dead and one was injured. Malvo had a previous record so his fingerprints were in the system. He was traced to a homeless shelter where he had been staying with John Muhammad. Muhammad lived in Washington State and is likely where he taught Malvo to shoot. That is where the tree comes in. There are many more factors that helped them get caught and prosecuted but saying all of this in a 1 minute collage is impossible.
A textbook example of connecting the dots - all you need is a place to start and they gave it away by bragging about that Alabama murder. Thanks for the additional info to a great video!
Weren't they caught sleeping??? Because they finally found out the kind of vehicle they were driving and I believe they were sleeping in their vehicle at a rest stop.
I was a sophomore in high school when I heard about these shootings on the news. Some tragic and scary stuff. Lamont at Large and Mobile Instinct did a phenomenal collab on this one. Great job to the both of you!
I went to a concert in Norfolk, VA on Oct 16, 2002. Drove from NC. One of the opening bands had a hit song at the time and the lyrics went, "So lay down. The threat is real. When his sight goes red again." It was Chevelle opening up for Stone Sour. Talk about an eerie and scary drive up there and back. We fueled up at the NC/VA border so we didn't have to stop anywhere other than a covered car park next to the venue and make it back into NC after the show.
I lived in Alexandria Virginia just 10 minutes from DC when this happened. I'll never forget the fear for my son and children when they went to school. The teachers and staff would create a path for the busses when they arrived shielding the students on their way to the building and when they left.

I'm always lived in the DC area and I was young enough when this occurred to not remember it myself. However, on ocassion my family are in the area of these locations. I know we're at one when my dad ask "Have I ever told you about the DC sniper?". I've learned regardless of how you answer that question...you're getting a history lesson. Not really complaining at that. I find it odd how I've never heard anyone reference to it besides my dad. I'd imagine it gets "overshadowed" by other significant tragedies that occurred during that time period. I'm almost willing to bet that many people my age who were born and raised in this area have probably never even heard of this. That feels odd considering the amount of stress everyone was under just trying to do everyday activities...and the amount of lives lost.

I was there in VA when the FBI agent was shot and killed at the Home Depot in Falls Church, VA. Reason it took so long is people were calling in with terrible information and there was an assumption of an olive skinned male driving a white van so their car and identification was overlooked. The Caprice was at the school across 50 from Home Depot. That’s is where they found their shell casings. Also, he groomed the young boy and their are reports their relationship was also sexual. Evil folks the both of them. Also, cowards. I still went out did my thing and many others did. We were not going to let these good balls scare us. All of that for nothing. That carnage for nothing. Both a buddy and I thought that would be a spot they would use. Where he was lying the lot was unkept then and there were bushes so it was suitable to lay down on the ground there. Me and a friend got stuck at the McDonald's across the gas station in manassas and didn't know what happened till I got home. That was a crazy time In the area.
I remeber growing up in the DC area during this. It was a crazy time. So many people were afraid just to go outside their own home. I was less then a mile away from the Sunoco gas station in Manassas when that shooting happened.
Hey. Yeap. I had just left that Home Depot and got home to Gainesville when I heard there was a shooting. And I had a neighbor who routinely ate at the Bob Evans across Sudley Road where the car was parked for that shooting but luckily she wasn’t there that day.
That animal did a lot more killing than just in the DC area. I lived in Spotsylvania County (about 80 miles south of DC) at the time and he shot someone at a gas station down there; two other locations a little further north of me as well as time went on, as he tried to keep authorities guessing. Most folks in the region were very much afraid - but a lot of us wanted a crack at him too, in all honesty. Situational awareness was preached, taught and practiced and it was never more evident in that time that when seconds count, the cops were only minutes away - you really had to look after yourself. Of course, he started it all in Washington State with a young lady, then an older fella at a golf course before he even came cross country, too.... He was pure evil incarnate - and yes kiddies, such a thing does exist. He's on a rotisserie in hell now, roasting for all eternity. F--- him. - Ed on the Ridge
Dang, i had no idea he did more than just the DC shootings. So im a big self defense guy myself, i take lots of training whenever I can. Im wondering, just how does one prepare his situational awareness for a shot out of the dark at what appears to be 50-100yds. Thats a crazy amount of ground to watch
@@nateh2652 The short, obvious answer is "you can't" - but being keenly aware of your surroundings in general isn't a bad idea regardless. Besides, perhaps you could pick up on something/someone who isn't necessarily aiming at you, but someone else as well? The DC news machine 4,5,7,9 had everyone scared to pump gas .. I'm not sure how far the viewing area goes but even 70 miles north west in md people were not wanting to get gas.. But in the end the two were driving this way/caught in myersville north west of DC, so maybe the 24/7 coverage was a good thing . I just remember me saying to myself if it's meant to be so be it while pumping gas.

7:15 I can really appreciate how you go into detail about the exact locations of events. For example, mentioning that the bench that's nearby today is almost identical to the bench that was there in 2002.
I remember when this happened. I recall that they were initially looking for a box truck as the sniper's vehicle and even had a pic of the truck but found out later that it was the Caprice. On a side note, if you pass through Lincoln, Nebraska, there's a Burger King on 27th street where a notable fatal crash happened. A dump truck was driving from a worksite when it's brake caliper pin sheared off, leaving the dump truck with no brakes. The dump truck careened downhill and the driver lost control, hitting two cars and plowing into the Burger King. This was in 2000 and I was across the street at the dry cleaners when it happened. Turns out that one of my coworkers knows the driver that was in the truck. I heard that the truck manufacturer got sued for the known faulty brake components. They rebuilt the Burger King that was damaged and it's still in business. They interviewed one of the customers at the BK and she had seen the dump truck in her mirror and floored it through the drive through. The gal behind her didn't know what was happening and pulled forward, only to get obliterated by the truck while sitting in the drive through. Her Buick was hit hard enough to push the rear of the car all the way to the engine compartment
@@jacobhuckleberry1364 Sure if you’re talking about hydraulic brakes but air brakes don’t work that way at all. If one brake fails, you still have the rest. If you loose too much air, the brakes will lock. They are fail safe. Now if you get them so hot the drums expand, that’s a whole different issue.

I grew up in Richmond and I remember police setting up corridors for kids to get on and off the bus. School never shutdown but more than half the students in my school weren't in class that week. Teachers had all the blinds closed and parked in the way back so that the school looked closed. Recess was in the cafeteria and we had to whisper at lunch and recess. There were several active shooter drills - all specifically announced as drills only - where the teachers would barricade the doors and students would hide under the teacher's desk for concealment. I learned later on that a teacher at my school was suspended without pay for a month for bringing a gun to school at the time, along with several others at other schools, but the punishment was light because the PTA and faculty and school board understood it was a strenuous circumstance. This was 20 years ago mind you. It was a big deal, yes, but people were still reasonable about it.
A true story add on. These two began their shooting spree in California, then over to Arizona, Texas, & Louisiana before heading Northeast on to Alabama then going through Chattanooga. This is where I believe that I crossed paths with these two on the I-24 a three lane highway that goes through Chattanooga. Locals call the steep hill portion the ridge cut. Late one night in the fall of that year. I remember two individuals in a medium-dark blue Chevrolet car what I would have identify at the time as a impala but turned out being a caprice. These two kept the same speed as me side by side up the ridge cut that loops around Chattanooga. My van was heavy and it always slowed when driving up this steep grade. They kept right beside me, I finally looked over to determine why they were keeping the exact speed as my van that was slowing rapidly because of the steep incline of the ridge and my eyes locked on to a young man seated in the passenger seat to my left that was staring over at me as their car was close to the line of the lane. We kept staring at each other for the next few seconds and then they proceeded on rapidly. As they proceeded ahead the highway pole lights illuminated their car enough that I could see two people in the car. I’m a pretty settled individual but I realized that I had just looked evil in the face. The hair stood up on my neck and arms. I mentioned this to my wife the next day how weird & frightened this person made me feel. I didn’t think too much about it until several days later, the story began to break on the news, pictures of their car were shown then the picture of Malvo and it all came together to me that this was the same car and it was the same young man that sat in the front passenger seat that pulled up on me late that night, their car close to my van all the way to the top of the ridge . I could be mistaken however nothing will make me change my mind. I will always believe it was them and wondering if they were trying to decide on me as their next victim?
I lived several hundred miles away when this happened and it scared the crap outta me… I had relatives in DC area, and also thinking it could happen anywhere. I followed the story closely, I felt so bad for that chief, and was so relieved when they nailed those nuts.
I remember this story , it still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. That kid knew what he was doing , but being a minor also makes him a victim of a monster who manipulated , dominated and control him . There's only one way out for that kid now a man , his last breath...........
I was going to school in Silver Spring when all this happened. Tensions was extremely high. This was one year after 9/11 and we were also dealing with anthrax in the mail.
I remember hearing a snippet from the 911 call from the husband of the woman shot at Home Depot and it was gut wrenching. I also seem to remember them asking for a ransom or they'd keep killing. Brutal! Thanks for sharing this, the first time I've seen it covered 8n this detail. Well done, gentlemen.

One theory that was put out early after they were caught is that the ex-wife was gonna be a target. They were gonna kill some then kill the ex,then kill some more making it look like she was merely a other random victim. If this was true they may have gotten away w/it if they hadn't targeted so many.
That's what I heard as well. It was supposed to be about killing her so he could gain custody of his son and daughter. So sad. DC area was almost at a standstill. We were terrified 💔
How did they not know that? Malvo told the detectives that was Muhammad’s plan. To kill a lot of people including his wife so that he wouldn’t be a suspect. Bad research guys.

It is always somewhat of a strain to hear and view these stories but, it is what we need to keep in mind on how the world has lost control of itself. When this was going on..I was driving a truck for a living and can remember my wife being so worried as my route was the route 70 corridor between Baltimore and Hagerstown...She would call every few hours to check on me.....
I remember some witness tried to say it was a Middle eastern man snipping and eventually confessed he lied and another reason why they weren’t caught earlier Bc they thought they were shooting from a white box truck and that’s what they were looking for. RIP to all the victims

That wasn’t the actual bench that lady was killed on. They bench was removed and never put back. That strip mall had multiple benches on that path

I remeber growing up in the DC area during this. It was a crazy time. So many people were afraid just to go outside their own home. I was less then a mile away from the Sunoco gas station in Manassas when that shooting happened.

Hey. Yeap. I had just left that Home Depot and got home to Gainesville when I heard there was a shooting. And I had a neighbor who routinely ate at the Bob Evans across Sudley Road where the car was parked for that shooting but luckily she wasn’t there that day.

That animal did a lot more killing than just in the DC area. I lived in Spotsylvania County
(about 80 miles south of DC) at the time and he shot someone at a gas station down there;
two other locations a little further north of me as well as time went on, as he tried to keep
authorities guessing.
Most folks in the region were very much afraid - but a lot of us wanted a crack at him too,
in all honesty. Situational awareness was preached, taught and practiced and it was never
more evident in that time that when seconds count, the cops were only minutes away - you
really had to look after yourself.
Of course, he started it all in Washington State with a young lady, then
an older fella at a golf course before he even came cross country, too....
He was pure evil incarnate - and yes kiddies, such a thing does exist.
He's on a rotisserie in hell now, roasting for all eternity. F--- him.

So im a big self defense guy myself, i take lots of training whenever I can. Im wondering, just how does one prepare his situational awareness for a shot out of the dark at what appears to be 50-100yds. Thats a crazy amount of ground to watch

@@nateh2652 The short, obvious answer is "you can't" - but being keenly aware of your surroundings in general isn't a bad idea regardless.
Besides, perhaps you could pick up on something/someone who isn't necessarily aiming
at you, but someone else as well?
If you've taken training on the subject, then you've probably heard the word "vigilant"
used before. It's exactly what I'm talking about.

The DC news machine 4,5,7,9 had everyone scared to pump gas .. I'm not sure how far the viewing area goes but even 70 miles north west in md people were not wanting to get gas.. But in the end the two were driving this way/caught in myersville north west of DC, so maybe the 24/7 coverage was a good thing . I just remember me saying to myself if it's meant to be so be it while pumping gas.
I still remember this when I was a kid. My mom had a trip to DC right in the middle of it and it got canceled. What a terrible thing.
I remember this series of incidents very well. It was top news in the Baltimore/Washington region. Thanks Chris (and Lamont) for a really fine video expose'. It's good to see you again.

7:15 I can really appreciate how you go into detail about the exact locations of events. For example, mentioning that the bench that's nearby today is almost identical to the bench that was there in 2002.
You know you're getting old when news clips from 2002 look like clips from the 80's/early 90s! lol
I remember when this happened. I recall that they were initially looking for a box truck as the sniper's vehicle and even had a pic of the truck but found out later that it was the Caprice. On a side note, if you pass through Lincoln, Nebraska, there's a Burger King on 27th street where a notable fatal crash happened. A dump truck was driving from a worksite when it's brake caliper pin sheared off, leaving the dump truck with no brakes. The dump truck careened downhill and the driver lost control, hitting two cars and plowing into the Burger King. This was in 2000 and I was across the street at the dry cleaners when it happened. Turns out that one of my coworkers knows the driver that was in the truck. I heard that the truck manufacturer got sued for the known faulty brake components. They rebuilt the Burger King that was damaged and it's still in business. They interviewed one of the customers at the BK and she had seen the dump truck in her mirror and floored it through the drive through. The gal behind her didn't know what was happening and pulled forward, only to get obliterated by the truck while sitting in the drive through. Her Buick was hit hard enough to push the rear of the car all the way to the engine compartment
Only one brake caliper sheared? That leaves several other wheel ends with functional brakes
Also if it was a big dump truck with air brakes they would have had drum brakes

@@jacobhuckleberry1364 Sure if you’re talking about hydraulic brakes but air brakes don’t work that way at all. If one brake fails, you still have the rest. If you loose too much air, the brakes will lock. They are fail safe. Now if you get them so hot the drums expand, that’s a whole different issue.

I grew up in Richmond and I remember police setting up corridors for kids to get on and off the bus. School never shutdown but more than half the students in my school weren't in class that week. Teachers had all the blinds closed and parked in the way back so that the school looked closed. Recess was in the cafeteria and we had to whisper at lunch and recess. There were several active shooter drills - all specifically announced as drills only - where the teachers would barricade the doors and students would hide under the teacher's desk for concealment.
I learned later on that a teacher at my school was suspended without pay for a month for bringing a gun to school at the time, along with several others at other schools, but the punishment was light because the PTA and faculty and school board understood it was a strenuous circumstance. This was 20 years ago mind you. It was a big deal, yes, but people were still reasonable about it.

A true story add on. These two began their shooting spree in California, then over to Arizona, Texas, & Louisiana before heading Northeast on to Alabama then going through Chattanooga. This is where I believe that I crossed paths with these two on the I-24 a three lane highway that goes through Chattanooga. Locals call the steep hill portion the ridge cut.
Late one night in the fall of that year. I remember two individuals in a medium-dark blue Chevrolet car what I would have identify at the time as a impala but turned out being a caprice. These two kept the same speed as me side by side up the ridge cut that loops around Chattanooga. My van was heavy and it always slowed when driving up this steep grade. They kept right beside me, I finally looked over to determine why they were keeping the exact speed as my van that was slowing rapidly because of the steep incline of the ridge and my eyes locked on to a young man seated in the passenger seat to my left that was staring over at me as their car was close to the line of the lane. We kept staring at each other for the next few seconds and then they proceeded on rapidly. As they proceeded ahead the highway pole lights illuminated their car enough that I could see two people in the car. I’m a pretty settled individual but I realized that I had just looked evil in the face. The hair stood up on my neck and arms.
I mentioned this to my wife the next day how weird & frightened this person made me feel. I didn’t think too much about it until several days later, the story began to break on the news, pictures of their car were shown then the picture of Malvo and it all came together to me that this was the same car and it was the same young man that sat in the front passenger seat that pulled up on me late that night, their car close to my van all the way to the top of the ridge . I could be mistaken however nothing will make me change my mind. I will always believe it was them and wondering if they were trying to decide on me as their next victim?

I lived several hundred miles away when this happened and it scared the crap outta me… I had relatives in DC area, and also thinking it could happen anywhere. I followed the story closely, I felt so bad for that chief, and was so relieved when they nailed those nuts.
I was in Richmond, VA. My aunt & uncle were in Manassas. We were at the Ponderosa right before the shooting that took place there

I remember this story , it still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. That kid knew what he was doing , but being a minor also makes him a victim of a monster who manipulated , dominated and control him . There's only one way out for that kid now a man , his last breath...........
I was going to school in Silver Spring when all this happened. Tensions was extremely high. This was one year after 9/11 and we were also dealing with anthrax in the mail.
None of us know when our last breath will be. 💜

I had just left the Home Depot in Manassas and arrived home when I heard about the Sunoco station.. I also had a neighbor who routinely ate at the Bob Evans across the street. THEN, I was helping my brother do some yard work at his place in Arlington, and stopped in at the Home Depot in the parking garage just hours before the shooting. 2 near scares at getting shot at is all I can handle. I also remember them looking for a box truck, which I think was to distract the shooters. I remember people walking in zig zag to deter a good shot too
My parents & I were at the Ponderosa the night of that shooting and had just left.

I definitely remember when this was going on and even though I live very far away from where this happened you gotta think anything crazy could happen anywhere. Always try to watch your surroundings.

One theory that was put out early after they were caught is that the ex-wife was gonna be a target. They were gonna kill some then kill the ex,then kill some more making it look like she was merely a other random victim. If this was true they may have gotten away w/it if they hadn't targeted so many.

How did they not know that? Malvo told the detectives that was Muhammad’s plan. To kill a lot of people including his wife so that he wouldn’t be a suspect. Bad research guys.

When this was going on..I was driving a truck for a living and can remember my wife being so worried as my route was the route 70 corridor between Baltimore and Hagerstown...She would call every few hours to check on me.....
I remember some witness tried to say it was a Middle eastern man snipping and eventually confessed he lied and another reason why they weren’t caught earlier Bc they thought they were shooting from a white box truck and that’s what they were looking for. RIP to all the victims
