Hey Dale - just wanted to say what a helpful video series this has been! I just passed my FRTOL, and this video helped me so much when preparing, and put my mind at relative ease ahead of the exam. Now onto the skills test!
@@SpectrumGeeksI passed! Was very thankful that the school I went to for the exam still used the moving map on the computer, made life very easy, and the examiner was an absolute legend - really explained it all to me (especially requesting QDM which I hadn’t ever done before!).
Irv Lee's course is really good and bang up to date. Well worth it when you start Comms, the basics are made really clear, there are practical tips, and Irv offers a follow-up when you get near to taking the FRTOL
Excellent video, full of great information and tips. Sounds very involved but as you said towards the end of your flught training we should be using these phrases all the time.
FWIW I did my FRTOL a few months ago, and the examiner used Skydemon's simulation mode to fly the route I'd planned at the start of the exam. I was in another room on a Zoom call so we could both see where the aircraft was and make the appropriate radio calls. It was all going well until the final approach to the destination airfield, where of course Skydemon doesn't follow any prescribed circuit but just plonks the aircraft down in the middle of the runway and yet you're expected to make the appropriate radio calls. It all worked out in the end, but having had the visual aid throughout the flight I found the switch to "finger on chart" mode at the end a little weird.
Hi Dale Once again an awesome video! I’ve passed all nine theoretical exams now. I wanted to know how much exam revision & prep time you put in for the FRTOL exam? Thanks once again
In terms of exam prep and revision, its pretty much as covered in the video. I did the Irv Lee Zoom course and that was probably an hour, then I spent the rest of the time reading CAP413 and then just trying to research what the exam would be like. I think by the end of your training (as I did mine at the end) you should be pretty confident with the RT, so just need to make sure you dont use any RT "slang" like pilots really use, vs what CAP413 states.
@@SpectrumGeeks Thank you Dale for your help and tips. I’m on section 6 of the SRG1171 - Emergency Procedures Your videos are useful, thank you once again
35:20 would it not be two three and five six instead of twenty three and fifty six? 😉 in all seriousness great video, I have my FRTOL exam tonight and this has been very helpful for me in terms of what to expect in the exam
@@SpectrumGeeks cheers mate, I passed it! Was very similar to yours: basic route from an airfield beneath controlled airspace, MATZ penetration, position fix, engine failure
The frequencies are on your chart, so just as when you are flying normally you can see what areas you will be flying and the frequencies you may need to speak with. Also in your briefing you will be told to speak to X, Y, Z to request things also as part of the exercise.

Yup was a great course with the advantage of being able to do it remote.
Nice video! Just finished all 9 theory exams, onto FRTOL next, this has been really helpful in finding out what to prepare for. Cheers mate
Glad it helped and best of luck with the FRTOL.
I am working on a similar video in terms of my skills test, how I prepared, and how it went.
Fly safe.

Thanks for sharing your experience, the Sky Demon approach is a good one, so great the examiner took that approach.
Thanks Dale! Very helpful video 👍

Great video, very informative. Thanks

Excellent stuff - were you allowed a clock or timer ? Or a calculator ? Or CR or E6B ?
I had my watch on from memory, but only things you can take in is a pen, paper, current chart, ruler and then I asked for the paper clip.
I used plane speak, a course run by Andy moon. Top guy
Excellent, cheers for sharing.
Thank you for sharing information but we’re can I get the form manual because I’m going to do the exam on September
All the links should be in the description.

@@SweatyCam Awesome and congrats.
How do you know which frequencies to use along your route ? (Sorry if this was already mentioned in your video I may have missed it)
