This is the best "Final Scene" of Sweeney Todd I've heard! I just love the way that Ball's voice is dripping with venom. He truly makes Todd sound like he's restraining himself from lunging at Lovett, and then brutally strangling her to death.
Agreed. George Hearn will always be "the" Sweeney to me but this "Final Scene" blows all others out of the water. I find Mrs. Lovett here even more compelling than Sweeney. Have yet to see anyone else even try her approach to this scene.
He throws her into the oven here too, and every version. I think that final slam sound is him shutting the doors. It does seem like he looks at her for a bit, though.
It's amazing how Imelda picks up steam with every line starting with "No, no, not lied at all" until the stunning lines already pointed out below. I really liked Angela Lansbury's Mrs. Lovett but the performance in this song is on a totally different level to me.
There's something more...real? about it. Not just reading words on a page. Most sing that part soft and gentle but with her there's an almost guttural force of emotion behind her words. It's almost like she's angry. Desperate and angry. "How dare you not recognize my love for you!"
I love this part of the show. Sondheim recycles and repurposes elements from four different songs ("Poor Thing", "A Little Priest", "By the Sea", and "The Barber and His Wife") in a relatively short sequence and it all hangs together beautifully. That is genius at work.
Yeah I’ve watched a lot of versions of this by now, but this was the first I heard and I always come back to it as my favorite. Most of the versions I’ve heard just don’t really punctuate Mrs Lovett’s parts like Imelda Staunton, and instead feel like they’re just getting her done with. Plus Michael Ball’s performance feels a lot less...overwrought? When it comes to Sweeney seeing Lucy’s face. I know it’s supposed to be melodramatic, but other Sweeneys like to yell all his lines. Ball is a lot more seething and venomous.
I think it's very interesting how different other interpretations of the characters are in each production. The 2012 revival makes Todd look more insane and psychotic while the Tim Burton Todd is a lot more calm, collected, charismatic and charming. He's still very passionate about getting his revenge and has some outbursts, but it's nothing compared to how emotional Michael's performance is. The film seems more stylised and romantic, but this performance focuses a lot more on the insanity and cruel ways of the characters. They are very different, but I love them both.
I came here because of an animation Edit: Came back 3 years later completely forgetting about this comment holy shit. And yea I was referring to Fennah. I'm really late wow.
"Lucy... I've come home again" Isn't it so tragic? For him to have probably thought of saying it to her when he came back to her. Instead he's telling her now...
The people that think this is lesser than the one in film, can do what they want. THIS is my definitive so far. And there’s a reason this Lovett’s the favorite, “by far” I’m told, by Sondheim. This is incredible.
this is def my favorite stageplay version of this song, i'm not fond of the screaming in the other versions and love how michael ball puts such emotion into his voice without screaming or even raising his voice much.
I'm in love with the performance of "The Barber and His Wife" by Michael Ball in the final sequence. Michael Ball's Sweeney Todd was absolutely maniacal all the way. But at that moment a naive and loving Benjamin Barker comes out from under the shell of Sweeney.
Lyrics: -You! Have all the demons in hell have come to torment me? -What about.. quick! Into the oven with her! -Why did you scream? Is the judge still alive? -He was.. he was clutching on to my skirt but now.. now he's finished. -Right, leave him to me. Open the oven doors. -No! -Open the doors I said! -Don't.. don't touch her! -What is the matter with you? She's just some miserable old beggar! -Oh no.. oh god.. -"Don't I know you?" she said. You knew she lived? You knew my Lucy lived. -I was only thinking of you! -Lucy.. -Your Lucy a mad hag, picking bones and rotten spuds out of dustbins, would you have wanted to know that's how she ended up? -You lied to me! -No, no, not lied at all. No I never lied. -Lucy.. -Said she got poisoned, she did, never said that she died. Poor thing, she lived -I've come home again.. -But it left her weak in the head, all she did for months was just lie there in bed -Lucy.. -Should've been in hospital, wound up in Bedlam instead, poor thing! -Oh my god! -Better you should think she was dead. Yes I lied, 'cause I love you! -Lucy.. -I'd be twice the wife she was! I love you! -What have I done? -Could that thing have cared for you like me? -Mrs. Lovett, you're a bloody wonder and eminently practical and yet appropriate as always. As you've said repeatedly there's little point in dwelling in the past! -Do you mean it? Everything I did I swear I thought was only for the best, believe me! Can we still be married? -No, come here, my love, not a thing to fear, my love, what's dead is dead. -The history of the world, my pet -Oh, Mr. Todd, Ooh Mr. Todd, leave it to me. -Is learn forgiveness and try to forget. -By the sea, Mr. Todd, we'll be comfy-cosy, you and me Mr. Todd where there's no one nosy. -And life is for the alive my dear, so let's keep living it! -Just keep living it, really living it! -Noo! Nooo! There was a barber and his wife, and she was beautiful. A foolish barber and his wife, she was his reason and his life. And she was beautiful. And she was virtuous. And he was naive. Pat-a-cake, Pat-a-cake, baker man. Bake me a cake. No! No, bake me a pie. And I will sigh if the crust be high. Mr. Todd, it's the old woman. You've hurt her too, have you? You shouldn't, you know. You shouldn't hurt nobody. Pat him, and prick him, and mark him with B. And put in the oven for baby and me.

I thought he threw her into an oven and slammed it shut.
Yeah, this Todd is probably the angriest Sweeney I’ve ever heard. But this is nothing compared to epiphany...oof does he sound pissed off there.
@@kitsunephantom6155 that was in the movie version.

God I love the way she sings “Cause I love you”

Imelda did the best Lovett in my opinion, just listening to her raving in this song gave me chills!
*_YOU LIED TO ME!_*

I'D BE TWICE THE WIFE SHE WAS WAAASSS!!!!
Literally the best part
Unbelievable composing. The man is a genius.

I honestly prefer this production over all the other Sweeney Todd productions, including the Tim Burton film and the original.

I didn't even know about this production until now, two of my favorite actors in my favorite musical!
imelda sounds very wicked
This is better than the movie version. Hands down
Fennah brought me here
The cellos at the beginning, though. The tremelos made it sound like burning fire. I never knew the cello could do that, I'll keep that in mind
Omg. Imelda is brilliant!!! "I loooove youuuuu!!!". Amazing! I want a DVD. 😔
