  • Driving the Great St Bernard Pass from Italy to Switzerland. I had low expectations after driving the Little St Bernard Pass because overtaking was prohibited the entire route, and I met several very slow drivers. While overtaking is also not allowed anywhere on the Italian side of the Great St Bernard Pass, I was lucky enough to find the pass completely empty (Wednesday afternoon)! It was a real joy to drive with great views, definitely recommended on quiet times!

    While working in F1, driving Trucks all over Europe for 27 years covering over 2 million miles ( 3.2 million KM) I used to look at these roads while driving on the Motorways and dream of retiring, buying a Goldwing and cruising them at leisure. That did not quite work out. Cancer came along and put an end to that dream. At least I can see what I missed thanks to your Wonderful videos. You are very lucky to be able to drive these spectacular roads. :-)))

    It was interesting to see how much better the road was engineered on the Italian side of the pass, with more and better armco and far less potholes and disintegrating road surface! And I thought😢 the Swiss were so particular!

    Fantastic! Thank you! Italian side much smoother, safer. Swiss side rather raw and edgy (pardon the pun). "On days like this ... " indeed!

    That was a great uninterrupted run you had, you were lucky. We have done the GStBP in three different cars, last year we did it in our 50 year old Alfa Romeo Spider. That was a great video RTTL, thanks, but you were missing the sound track we enjoyed in the Spider.

      Got the Tesla mainly for financial reasons and the amazing acceleration. It's lots of fun to drive, but I too sometimes miss some sound ;-)

    Fun fact: this is the pass that napoleon bonaparte use to cross the alp. Contrary to popular believes in reality he rode a mule with a guide not a horse.

    Those snaggle toothed guard rails (posts?) (around 18:13 mark)...made me very unhappy. I need a drink. That was stressful. (p.s. Not your driving, that was smooth as silk. The scary drop off to the valley below is what I meant)..

    Was this the location filmed in Goldfinger?....

    • @davidjean-christophe9014
      @davidjean-christophe9014 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think so. James BOND is following Goldfinger on the FURKA Pass, which Grand Hotel could be seen at a moment behind the Aston. For the Grand Saint Bernard, you could find it in the credits on the beginning of "the italian job"with the legendary LAMBORGHINI Miura. À MUST BE SEEN moment.

    I am wondering what are those conical buildings heading down?

    • @AML2000
      @AML2000 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suspect they are possibly part of the Swiss border fortifications, the so-called National Redoubt, but I may be wrong! Then again, when I think about it, they may be ventilation shafts for the St. Bernard road tunnel. We left that road, which is now the main route through the pass, just before the start of the climb and joined back up at the end of the video.
