Thank you for doing this video. It inspires me, the labor costs have been the reason I’ve been holding off. Much respect to your Dad. Vietnam Vets are some off the best people I’ve ever met.
I have 103 twin cam I had great oil psi when I changed my cams . No issues and I have 14 psi at idle and as much as 40 psi at 3500 Rpm . I used my original cam plate and I oil pump with 50,000 miles . 2015 eltra glide .
I have a 2021 street glide special. I put a stage 2 kit in myself with oil pump and cam plate. I watched Patrick from J&P cycles, he made a video and I followed it step by step. It was actually fun doing the install.
Hey man much respect. I really enjoy the videos and you have rekindled the fire of riding and wrenching again, it's been a while. And tell your dad thanks for his service. Bless yall
I put an S&S 475 cam in my SG CVO When I pulled the cam bearing out, there was needle bearings missing. I searched around with a magnet with no luck. I was missing about 3 needles and a couple of casing pieces. I finally just put it back together and changed the oil. It ran frickin great and there was no noise but I just didn’t trust it. So after about 500 miles, I just decided to do a stage 4. I pulled the motor completely out and sent the bottom end up north for some upgrades and bullet proofing. I even pulled the pan off the tranny for cleaning. I never found those needles and after talking to a few experts about it, I just figured it came that way from the factory and must have got damaged when they assy the motor new. Moral of the story; if you are on the fence about a stage 2, just do it and replace that weak link.
Oops..You must have been distracted by that nice Florida weather you have. I was looking over your shoulder admiring your weather. I live in Pennsylvania everything is grey and bare. I envy your weather as much as your bikes. Thank you for your videos. 😁

Your description of Jason's work impressed me as "poor man's blueprinting" -- not disrespecting the man at all . He is where I wanted to get to! Alas, bad joints, and not the rolled kind.

@@murrayhelmer8941 yup, I simply walked away from the job to do my real job, came back and put the sprockets back on. I just didn’t pay attention, and that’s when things go sideways.

I find its a good idea to rotate the rear tire after you first get the cam plate bolts in finger tight. Then at 10lb torque, rotate the wheel a few more times. Helps center the cam within the cam plate. keep rotating and torquing until to full spec.
Kudos to you. Did a Stage 2 on a Twin Cam, not scary at all ( ok a little) but I had the same concerns you did. Another good one to watch is Kruesi Originals. Take your time, soak the tapets, follow the instructions, easy peasy. The second one on a Fat Boy was even easier and completed in a third the time. Again, kudos and great job.
@ProfessionalMonkey been busy with work, been traveling a lot and it's not letting up. So I've been off the social media scene enjoying what family time I get. But We miss you guys Hope you all have a great Christmas, Love you guys
First, congrats on the successful install!! It's not easy for someone to admit their failures and you did it twice. Good job on that too. The first time is always the hardest so don't be afraid to do it again, and again, and again. Next thing you know you'll be rebuilding motors. Your buddy Jason is correct, that is how you build in reliability. I like to think of it this way, the time you spend cleaning, prepping and double checking everything as you go is money and time saved when it breaks/leaks/etc.
Wow... very impressive you got that job completed!!! I think you did a wonderful job and taught us all an important lesson... don't skip steps!!! However, you did it and all is working great!!! Good Job!!! I don't think I could have done that job, but you showed everyone it could be done!!!
Not sure if its the same for M8's finding Top Dead Center before cutting push rods but with Twin Cams everybody always sticks their finger or a straw in the cylinder after removing spark plug, or they rotate the tires and watch push rods movement etc etc.. all you have to do is remove the cam cover which you have to do anyways and rotate the tires using the timing mark positions for exact TDC.
Congrats on taking the plunge. I watched 100 videos first and had major butthole pucker when I cut the first pushrod out when I did my cam. No better feeling though than saying I did it myself. I kept the HD oil pump and cam plate. 21 Road Glide
Great video!! I did a cam upgrade 2 years ago in my 2017 M8, and I did upgrade to the newest HD oil pump and the S&S tappet cuffs...... On a side note, I haven't heard that "focus.... Both of us?" joke in 20 years 😂😂😂 well done!!!!
When I did mine , I got a buddy to help me and when he pulled the cam chest off along with the oil pump ,one of the gears fell out and needless to say it didn’t go in the way it was.when we started it , it wasn’t building oil pressure. We would adjust the push rods and they wouldn’t stay right because the lifters were sloppy from no oil pressure. Ended up taking it to a local shop to get it right. The gear from the oil pump was not put back in right!🤯
I understand totally, I broke the bolt on my tappet cuff flush with case. I know the exact look you had. Luckily so many people have broke it that they make a specialty tappet cover that serves as the cuff also. Expensive mistake but at least it only set me back a couple days. I got mine from fuel moto. Good job, I understand the not wanting to bother people too.
On my 22 Road Glide 107 that I put an S&S 475 cam in. I used the stock oil pump because is is better than the first Gen M8, and it is doing fine and works great. The Stage II upgrade does make more heat than the stock setup. I had to install an UltraCool oil cooler to keep it from over heating. I live in Pensacola and it gets hot here, you may want to look into this also.
One of these days I want to put a stage 2 on my '23 Ultra Limited. You're a braver man than I to do this job yourself. If I spent a bunch of money on a pretty cam and cam plate from like Feuling (because my bike is Redline red), I hear Trask makes a transparent cam chest cover so you can see those beauties doing their job.
Dude, if you ever try out Freedom Shields, you will never use a different windshield again........GUARANTEED!!!! Another quick tip, if you remove the left side thigh heat protector, keep the one on the right side, it WILL help your bike run cooler and you will feel less heat. This eliminates the air that's being stuffed behind the aft cylinder and lets it all come out on the left side. It's something you can actually feel. Good call on the pump and cam plate. The flow and pressure is much better than stock. Very glad we didn't see any bent valves on this girl!! AWESOME video as always Monkey!!! Thanks for keepin it real!
thanks I will probably leave that one for the pros. I love the info on the needle bearing and the oil pump. I did my own stage one and a lift would have. been welcome for sure.
Put your tappets in a vac jar to pump them with oil. If you have a vacuum sealer for food, chances are you have a jar that came with it. Tappets in jar with oil, vac it and watch the air bubble out. They are now pumped with oil. Great job Monkey!!!
Now that you've done it the next one(s) should be easy. When it didn't start, I was sure it was gonna be because you didn't pump up the lifters before installation.(at least didn't show it.) You were very fortunate that the valve timing wasn't off far enough to create valve to piston contact. Good thing is, you'll never make that mistake again. Great job getting put of your comfort zone and getting the job done!
Back in the day many many moons ago when I was 18 I worked for an engine development company in the UK and had the opportunity to build my first car engine from scratch, bare block up. Guess what I did..... instead of putting the timing marks TOGETHER I lined them up with the marks on OPPOSITE sides of the sprockets so making the timing 180 deg out... guess what, motor did not fire up! When you went to start your bike and it didn't fire I knew exactly what you had done, you was so lucky you didn't hit a piston and bend a valve, you don't need a motor to run to do that!
I did a Stage 2 on my old Road Glide Special some years ago ... never again. I would rather work extra hours at my job and have a professional spend 1/4th the amount of time and have the proper tools.
I’m going to do a stage II to my midyear production 2019 FLHTK . I was told the latest oil pump started September of 2019, I bought the SE pump & plate just in case. Leaning towards the Star Racing 30/30 cam.
A very good one to watch is Kevin Baxter,on tear downs and rebuilds , like your show I watch him weekly,a very wise engineering program for Harley lovers
Thank you so much for this video. I have a 2018 Ultra Limited (107 motor) that only has V&H Power Duals, SE Air, and Cobra NH slip ons. I bought the bike 2 months ago. It had 91,000 kms on it (yes I am in Canada) and I've put 4,000 kms on it since I bought it. I have really been thinking about doing the cam and oil pump on this bike. However, I purchased the Harley ESP when I bought the bike. So I would have to stay with HD parts to maintain the ESP warranty. I'd like to do this job myself, like you did. It's all about maintaining that service plan though at this point. I've looked at the Fueling Camchest kit with the 472 cam, but that would void the ESP for sure. I also have a PowerVision from my old SGS that I haven't hooked up yet, again because of the ESP. So likely I'll have to get the HD tuner as well. But you inspire me to wrench on my bike. The install looks straight forward, as long as I don't forget to set my timing ;)
That’s the first thing I said when watching this video you never said anything about the timing, plus I don’t remember if you checked the runout before the install. You supposed to soak the tappets in oil before installing. After the parts settle in I’m pretty sure you going to have to readjust the pushrods they probably going to be a little lose.
When I did my twin cam I removed the cam chest cover and I could see when the cams was on the base lobe.not sure about the M8. Very good video by the way
Im planning on doing a S&S 465 this winter on my 18 Softail. Since it’s an 18, I’m doing the whole bang on it. Cam plate and oil pump. Might change exhaust as well from my V&H 2-2 to a 2-1 of some kind but haven’t decided on that yet. I know all this will be way beyond my pay grade. Have 3 local indie shops and 3 dealers all within about 45 minutes of me. Not sure which one I’ll have do the work, but leaning towards one of the smaller Indy shop that is a little further away, but everyone I talk to swears by them.
Nice work Monk, glad nothing happened and you had the sense to stop trying to start it the first time, funny thing is I was wondering after you put the pump and plate back in it you didn't mention at least lining up the timing dots on the cam and crank sprockets and when it didn't start I figured that was the problem.. in the end your just one step closer to refining your own oil for the smoke out chopper build....lol. Cheers from the Great White North.. PS.. your right working on the concrete floor SUCKS HUGE
It is nice to have friends that are Masters at engine mechanics, I can appreciate your enthusiasm and wanting to do a stage 2 ,But I would have to pay someone because I know me ,I would screw it up, nice video.
Man I wish I had the balls to do a cam job. I promise you I would screw it up so badly I'd be down at the dealership having them fix what I destroyed. Luckily the OldWing doesn't have this as an option! Great video sir!
Awesome work Monk for a first timer !! I was telling myself I guess he did the timing well. Oh well. I was just like your friend when I worked for Jaguar Meticulous! Working on the old V12s was a nightmare, but when they ran, they left rubber! Keep up the great work !! Happy Holidays !!
You are going to love that RS 472 cam, I have it in my 2019 CVOSG-- I`m now experimenting with Star cam---hoping to get as much as possible out of the M* without installing a 131 motor. next you are going to need to upgrade the clutch basket and compensator :)---never ends!
Supposedly via fuel moto. If you take the came cover off first. You can use the dots on the gear alignment sprokets you can determine BDC on rear cylinder if both dots are at 6 o'clock and rotate both dots to 12 o'clock position for front cylinder BDC... may be incorrect as far as front cylinder and rear cylinder but overall thats Supposedly the easier way to do it without watching the pushrods go up and down
Bro…..hilarious. Great video. I am going with the same cam and you almost had me convinced to do it myself but you had me at me being 52 and sitting on the floor, lol.
Great job. Like you I will do everything but go inside my motor. I leave that to someone who actually knows what they are doing. A co- worker has a VRod. I even pulled that whole thing apart in my garage. He took the parts and had them painted, powder coated, aftermarket bar and assorted other parts. I put the whole thing back together in two days and it rode great. He never came back with a complaint. Semi related question; The tour pak holder on your wall. Who is it by? Where did you get it?
Using the timing marks on the cam sprockets takes all the guess work out of pushrod removal and adjustment. Also a note on the tappet cuffs, the solution is not to just use the stockers, it’s to read the instructions 😂
Always good to hear a good VA story. Semper Fi old man! Getting out of your comfort zone is what leads to growth. Now you can say you've cracked one open.😊 Sounds good!!🎉
I was wondering about the timing when you didn’t talk about it or mention it as you were putting it back together. I haven’t done this job myself but have watched a few TH-cam videos on it.
Putting a torque cam in my Evo, soon. Not the first time I've done it, but first time I've done it on the floor. Only 35. But bad back and knees already. I do have an old craftsman jack that I'm hoping will help. Still debating one whether or not to pull the rocker covers and keep the pushrods intact.
If I can make an appointment with Jason in about a year when I’ll be ready to do my stage two and I can rent him for some assistance I would appreciate it 😃

Indy shops can use the business and if they’re good they’re great!
Thank you, finally!!! I never do mods to my bike unless you have, cuz you know If you can anyone can 🤣, I can finally order my stage 2 now 💪
Ain’t that the truth!
Just catching up, thanks again for being real and just wanted to say have a great new year and yes that hat rocks
Thanks bud!
you will be fine on your next stage two build!
Thank you 👍
You can put each cylinder on the compression stroke(base circle) and you will be able to cut both intake and exhaust pushrods.
Thanks for this. I need to convert my 04 ultra Classic to Hydraulic Cam Chain tensioner in the spring. After seeing this I might tackle it myself 😱
You can do it!
@@ProfessionalMonkey sure hope so. Bought the special tools
Great video thanks for the time you put in to show us!
I'm still riding my '05 Dyna and I enjoyed the video.
Good job brother....keep up the good work 👍☕️☕️✌️
Thanks 👍
Definitely a learning curve great job bud! Love that sound
Cherry juice! Seriously man this is good stuff, so much similarities and I've been watching you for a few months now!
I just used the timing marks on the cam chain to make sure it was closed
Just watching two of your videos so far, I have solved a couple issues with my bike. Thank you!!!!!
Great to hear!
Love the "warts-and-all" content, brother! I will be doing a cam plate and oil pump on my 2017 RK soon! Good to know what not to do! 😝
Yes drink time lol I think yall going to have a blast with this bike can’t wait to see what it’s going to look like in the end
I went with the stock pump in my '23.... No regrets.
Great job! Learning is part of it...
You got that right!
You should take it up to Matt @ Those Dyno Guys in Pinellas Park, FL for dyno tune.
😂😂😂
Great job on busting ya cherry with this install. Thank god for Jason.
Right? He saved my bacon.
Awesome job really enjoyed watching ride safe and enjoy
Thank you!
Semi related question;
The tour pak holder on your wall. Who is it by? Where did you get it?
Auto tune sucks, it never worked for me. Nicely done vato, you can now say you’ve installed 3-4 cams.
Great video. Thanks. I’m doing a SC stage 2 soon and I learned a lot from your video. 👍🏻
Nice job. We all have issues sometimes. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
M1 Abram’s love it
Using the timing marks on the cam sprockets takes all the guess work out of pushrod removal and adjustment. Also a note on the tappet cuffs, the solution is not to just use the stockers, it’s to read the instructions 😂
I did a review of that red scissor jack. It's awesome, I love mine!
Outstanding video. This gives me a little bit of confidence that I can do this myself. I won't lie, I'll still be a little scared.
LOL Love the hat !! Been wanting a CAM update and would like to try to do myself .. Thanks for vid.
Go for it!
If you don’t have the cam locking tool, you can set the rear wheel on the ground.
Lol, I'm in my 50's from Missouri, in Phoenix going to MMI!!!
If I can make an appointment with Jason in about a year when I’ll be ready to do my stage two and I can rent him for some assistance I would appreciate it 😃
Hoping to be able to put a stage 2 kit on my bike this winter
I did one cam replacement. Just took my time over the winter. Work 1&1/2 and stop….👍🏻
