As someone who struggles to maintain concentration I was daunted by a 3h+ interview but that was so captivating I listened to the entire thing without interruption, what a well balanced and respectful discussion between the both of you. Respect for great content and massive kudos to Meg for the perseverance, sticking to her guns and executing with such a humble approach!

A multilevel understanding of the problem we are having with all of our institutions, public life, and to tell you from experience, it also happens to Jane Doe-s when they unknowingly wonder into very toxic environments. The pattern of narcissism (or worse) in different scales and intensity.
Such a brave and tenacious woman that should be applauded. For me at least, Sundance's and SXSW's judgement should be what the debate centers around. I thought these two organizations represented what was suppose to be the pinnacle or "ground breaking" art. For them to have made these collective decisions says to me they are no longer willing to risk being credible.
MEG, genuine suggestion: get the film before Werner Herzog's eyes. As you likely know, he really helped get the word out on "The Act of Killing". If your film is as good as it sounds, he might be able to add some weight to whatever campaign is necessary to get the film distributed.
She makes a great point, around the hour mark, how it is better to have plenty of time to interview someone, to ask about the persons backstory (or things that aren't even considered necessarily relevant). Versus a journalist that has to dive right into tough questions because they are limited by a deadline. I think that's a hindrance to traditional journalism, hitting the tough questions right off the bat. Getting to know the subject beforehand gives you context as to why someone may think the way they do. Better yet, it saves the interviewer from potentially asking questions in a way that offends the interviewee, or causes them to shut down. Plus it shows empathy, rather than just treating a person like their the next story to be capitalized on. It seems like it's a minor thing, but i bet establishing a good rapport with someone first, goes a long ways towards gathering information and for overall honesty.

I don’t understand: years ago I saw a documentary ( in Israel) about the rehab of Jihad fighters in a rehab prison in Saudi Arabia. At the end they said that many of those rehab people went back to fight for Jihad ( Al Kaeda) maybe the film now is more personal, but for sure it is not the first documentary on that subject. Good people do bad things bec bad ideas.

I listen to literally all of Sam's podcasts and I can firmly say this was one of the most educational, enjoyable and eye-opening. Here's to hoping this film makes it onto a large platform like Netflix and Meg can make it to the Oscars.

I appreciate your attempts to keep her on track and moving forward towards the point. It was difficult to have the constant sidebars and trying to get back on track. Certainly, she’s very interesting but it was all over the place.
My laptop mysteriously stopped working and I have to find someone to restart it from scratch. The error message says that I will lose my files, and have to reinstall the programs. Agree on this a lot. While I hate cancel culture, I've come to dislike most of the so-called intellectual dark web too. Sam is the only person that I find to always stick to his principles, even if I don't agree with them all the time.
@@pathologicaldoubt the logic is that most politicians in almost every country are acting in such clear self interest and the interest of elites, while actively punishing and subjugating their voters, that it's becoming difficult to ignore the possibility that they're operating under ulterior motives. The great reset is the only theory that's been posited with a significant deal of evidence and correlation. It's hard to chalk self interest on such a wide scale to simple politics when it's so degrading to the founding principles of our democratic economies and flies in the face of what we were raised to believe is the equitable and reasoned world we have the right to believe in. Much easier to believe that these actors are deliberately being malicious and the great reset explains how that could be the case. Hopefully not feeding a troll here but regardless, that's the logic.

I just finished listen to this incredible podcast. Thank you for bringing this cancellation to light, and using your platform to point the spotlight on this incredible film. As someone who works in the film industry, I am absolutely disgusted by this behaviour.
This is so strange. Last year, I wrote a paper about ISIS and its effects on the Middle East and the Muslim community, and a lot of my classmates and teacher were fascinated by my interest in the subject. Thing is, I'm a cut and dry white dude. But I'm also an army vet with a deployment under my belt, and that usually shuts up any woke critics. Still though, it is concerning that so many people are towing the line to religious orthodoxy in the west. I understand that many Muslims feel subjugated and are tired of being displayed as terrorists when there is so much more to their culture. Some of the architecture in the Middle East and south east Asia are some of the most beautiful in the world. Not to mention the rugs and carpets are so beautifully crafted that many western carpets are inspired by those types of designs. There is also the hospitality in Muslim culture that I think is one of its most admirable qualities. To a point where I think that many Americans could learn a thing or two from the generosity of the people in these parts of the world. But the problem I have with Muslims and woke lefties who think that westerners have no right to speak on the issue of Jihadism and groups like ISIS is that someone like me and my friends, who have been to these countries and have studied this issue, are often more entitled to discuss it than most people. Just because you are a practicing Muslim doesn't mean you know anything about ISIS or counter terrorism, for that takes a different plethora of experience that many people from any community simply don't have. For instance, I am not entitled to speak on the KKK more than Daryl Davis, because he's a genuine expert on the subject. I'm not claiming here to be an true expert on Jihadism, but I have been trained in counter terrorism, been deployed, I've read the books and the scholarship, watched the documentaries, and have read several articles about the subject. It's something I know quite a bit about. And I'm floored that people can just shut someone down because they are not the proper identity. This is a real problem for any culture to endure. I hope we break this toxic cycle soon, because shutting down documentaries is on another level of authoritarian social order.
I have experienced coincidences or synchronicities in my life so intense that the hair stood up on the back of my neck and it gave me the creep. So does this piece of work with Meg's story. That is why I find Jungian psychology intriguing. Life has mysteries, we don't know the science behind it. It is science's turn to connect the dots. I think the problem is not with religion, but realizing why psychology is important and how abuse happens if we ignore the need of healing from all kinds of traumas. In all levels in society. At least: not to elect "leaders" with personality disorders. Is it so surprising they will cause havoc when they denied to be pleased or feel entitled to dictate everything to others how to live, think, behave and who/what not to worship because it should be them?
@@tahwsisiht I get your point, but when we're talking about a mostly religious identity, the religion itself becomes part of the conversation. Though I think it's important to differentiate between the Muslim identity and Islamic ideology (salafism, for instance). There are certainly Muslims who identify as Muslim only in the cultral sense. So, they may not really believe in the Quran or the prophecies of Mohammed, but they partake in Islamic celebrations with their family and friends. There are also liberals who share very strong humanistic values, and interpret the Quran and Hadeeth as such, whilst being critical of the problematic verses of the text, though they will defend their identity as Muslims (and by default defend Islam) if they feel it is under intense scrutiny by outsiders. It's kind of like, "if you think horribly of my religion, then what do you think of my culture, or my family, or myself?". I would agree that Sam Harris' antitheist absolutism isn't very effective when combating religious fundamentalism, regardless of how true some of it can be. However, in this sense we are talking about a kind of ideology that stems from strict religious conviction. This kind of offensive/military Jihad that groups like ISIS strive towards can be diagnosed by deeply religious orientation. I understand the argument of it being motivated by political factors or things like money (which I personally think is even worse than someone who's actually ideologically committed in some sense), but very much of the apocalyptic philosophy of ISIS and its goal of installing and expanding a caliphate CAN be explained from the Salafi-Jihadi interpretation of Islam. I wouldn't say that Islam is soley responsible for for this brand of terrorism, because that's ignorant, but it is certainly a huge piece of when we're talking about the motivations of Jihadists, particularly the thought leaders of these organizations. In this sense, when talking about this issue, Islam will always play a vital role in the conversation. Jihadism is an ideology that is informed by Islamic doctrine, and implemented through political instability and warfare. It's a complex issue, no question, but this is why I mentioned religion within my original post.
@@someperson9999 I hear your opinion. Although I did write my thoughts in the comment section, I think I will refrain from this kind of communication. It will never be a good way of explaining someone's view especially when you disagree. The more you trying to convey your point, the more room opens up for misinterpreting the intent or the validity of a point. I realized something recently. What I tried to share in this "comment section debates" may would take 30+ minutes video to listen to. Especially with people you disagree with, it is an impossible assignment. When you see one very simple misrepresentation or lie, it maybe takes you a sentence or two, but talking about details and the importance of that detail is not the same. All I meant is, for me, and I understand if you think it is not that important, psychology plays an important role how one uses their religion. Sorry that it took time out from your day to answer to my comment and if my response seems shut down-ish. We still can agree that it is nice to live in a country where we can have our own opinion without retaliation. I hope it will be like that in the future too. I am happy that you have your opinion too and in this case, it does not bother me how we differ.

Getting to know the subject beforehand gives you context as to why someone may think the way they do. Better yet, it saves the interviewer from potentially asking questions in a way that offends the interviewee, or causes them to shut down. Plus it shows empathy, rather than just treating a person like their the next story to be capitalized on.
It seems like it's a minor thing, but i bet establishing a good rapport with someone first, goes a long ways towards gathering information and for overall honesty.

I don’t understand: years ago I saw a documentary ( in Israel) about the rehab of Jihad fighters in a rehab prison in Saudi Arabia. At the end they said that many of those rehab people went back to fight for Jihad ( Al Kaeda) maybe the film now is more personal, but for sure it is not the first documentary on that subject.

Agree on this a lot. While I hate cancel culture, I've come to dislike most of the so-called intellectual dark web too. Sam is the only person that I find to always stick to his principles, even if I don't agree with them all the time.
@@pathologicaldoubt the logic is that most politicians in almost every country are acting in such clear self interest and the interest of elites, while actively punishing and subjugating their voters, that it's becoming difficult to ignore the possibility that they're operating under ulterior motives. The great reset is the only theory that's been posited with a significant deal of evidence and correlation. It's hard to chalk self interest on such a wide scale to simple politics when it's so degrading to the founding principles of our democratic economies and flies in the face of what we were raised to believe is the equitable and reasoned world we have the right to believe in. Much easier to believe that these actors are deliberately being malicious and the great reset explains how that could be the case.
Hopefully not feeding a troll here but regardless, that's the logic.

This is so strange. Last year, I wrote a paper about ISIS and its effects on the Middle East and the Muslim community, and a lot of my classmates and teacher were fascinated by my interest in the subject. Thing is, I'm a cut and dry white dude. But I'm also an army vet with a deployment under my belt, and that usually shuts up any woke critics. Still though, it is concerning that so many people are towing the line to religious orthodoxy in the west. I understand that many Muslims feel subjugated and are tired of being displayed as terrorists when there is so much more to their culture. Some of the architecture in the Middle East and south east Asia are some of the most beautiful in the world. Not to mention the rugs and carpets are so beautifully crafted that many western carpets are inspired by those types of designs. There is also the hospitality in Muslim culture that I think is one of its most admirable qualities. To a point where I think that many Americans could learn a thing or two from the generosity of the people in these parts of the world. But the problem I have with Muslims and woke lefties who think that westerners have no right to speak on the issue of Jihadism and groups like ISIS is that someone like me and my friends, who have been to these countries and have studied this issue, are often more entitled to discuss it than most people. Just because you are a practicing Muslim doesn't mean you know anything about ISIS or counter terrorism, for that takes a different plethora of experience that many people from any community simply don't have. For instance, I am not entitled to speak on the KKK more than Daryl Davis, because he's a genuine expert on the subject. I'm not claiming here to be an true expert on Jihadism, but I have been trained in counter terrorism, been deployed, I've read the books and the scholarship, watched the documentaries, and have read several articles about the subject. It's something I know quite a bit about. And I'm floored that people can just shut someone down because they are not the proper identity. This is a real problem for any culture to endure. I hope we break this toxic cycle soon, because shutting down documentaries is on another level of authoritarian social order.
I have experienced coincidences or synchronicities in my life so intense that the hair stood up on the back of my neck and it gave me the creep. So does this piece of work with Meg's story. That is why I find Jungian psychology intriguing. Life has mysteries, we don't know the science behind it. It is science's turn to connect the dots.
I think the problem is not with religion, but realizing why psychology is important and how abuse happens if we ignore the need of healing from all kinds of traumas. In all levels in society. At least: not to elect "leaders" with personality disorders. Is it so surprising they will cause havoc when they denied to be pleased or feel entitled to dictate everything to others how to live, think, behave and who/what not to worship because it should be them?
@@tahwsisiht I get your point, but when we're talking about a mostly religious identity, the religion itself becomes part of the conversation. Though I think it's important to differentiate between the Muslim identity and Islamic ideology (salafism, for instance). There are certainly Muslims who identify as Muslim only in the cultral sense. So, they may not really believe in the Quran or the prophecies of Mohammed, but they partake in Islamic celebrations with their family and friends. There are also liberals who share very strong humanistic values, and interpret the Quran and Hadeeth as such, whilst being critical of the problematic verses of the text, though they will defend their identity as Muslims (and by default defend Islam) if they feel it is under intense scrutiny by outsiders. It's kind of like, "if you think horribly of my religion, then what do you think of my culture, or my family, or myself?". I would agree that Sam Harris' antitheist absolutism isn't very effective when combating religious fundamentalism, regardless of how true some of it can be. However, in this sense we are talking about a kind of ideology that stems from strict religious conviction. This kind of offensive/military Jihad that groups like ISIS strive towards can be diagnosed by deeply religious orientation. I understand the argument of it being motivated by political factors or things like money (which I personally think is even worse than someone who's actually ideologically committed in some sense), but very much of the apocalyptic philosophy of ISIS and its goal of installing and expanding a caliphate CAN be explained from the Salafi-Jihadi interpretation of Islam. I wouldn't say that Islam is soley responsible for for this brand of terrorism, because that's ignorant, but it is certainly a huge piece of when we're talking about the motivations of Jihadists, particularly the thought leaders of these organizations. In this sense, when talking about this issue, Islam will always play a vital role in the conversation. Jihadism is an ideology that is informed by Islamic doctrine, and implemented through political instability and warfare. It's a complex issue, no question, but this is why I mentioned religion within my original post.
@@someperson9999 I hear your opinion. Although I did write my thoughts in the comment section, I think I will refrain from this kind of communication. It will never be a good way of explaining someone's view especially when you disagree. The more you trying to convey your point, the more room opens up for misinterpreting the intent or the validity of a point. I realized something recently. What I tried to share in this "comment section debates" may would take 30+ minutes video to listen to. Especially with people you disagree with, it is an impossible assignment. When you see one very simple misrepresentation or lie, it maybe takes you a sentence or two, but talking about details and the importance of that detail is not the same.
All I meant is, for me, and I understand if you think it is not that important, psychology plays an important role how one uses their religion.
