  • John Constable completed his painting of The Hay Wain in 1821, which depicts a rural scene on the River Stour. Today, the National Trust manages the landscape at Flatford that inspired this now famous view. We caught up with our Assistant Curator, Alice, to talk about what has become one of the most celebrated landscape paintings.

Loved this video which I'll use in my English class where we'll talk about the Hay Wain. Merci, Alice!

Excellent summary. Never thought of Constable as a sort of Norman Rockwell but in a way he was. Lovely description of Constable's contribution to the art of English landscape.

I have visited this site more times than I can remember, trying to capture it's essence in photographs at different times of year. Naturally, none of my efforts can do justice to Constable's painting, but in the attempt, my photography has improved.
