Thank you so much for these science videos. One of my sons has just taken his GCSEs. We watched them and agreed they are brilliant. An elder son is just issuing a post-doc scientific paper on particular aspects of DNA. I am watching your videos again as I grapple with the complexities of his paper, and am appreciating your videos even more.
i feel like this could have been a great vid but i was too distracted by the ear wax lmao. Why couldn't it be for like eye colour or something... nah jk this guy is a legend
Eye colour is not a simple case of Mendelian genetics. It is controlled by at least two different genes. It should not be used to illustrate genetics. Ear wax (even though it's unpleasant) is controlled by a single gene and does illustrate Mendelian genetics.
Freesciencelessons agreed there because Ear Wax is easier to explain because it’s strangely controlled by 1 gene. Although I understand your point he said Ear Wax about 20,000,000 times but it was still an accurate and informative video. Also I just realised that I’m 9 months late never mind
Whether an allele is dominant or recessive is determined by the base sequence of the gene but essentially it's random. Harmful alleles tend to be recessive as if they were dominant, they would cause harmful effects even if present in only one copy.
The set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment. Basically, the *visible outcome* of what the genotype is.
So a dominant allele requires only one copy for it to be shown in the person's phenotype (characteristics) think of it as overriding the recessive allele. A recessive allele requires two copies of the recessive allele (no dominant present) for it to be shown in the person's phenotype.
Dominant-allele which controls characteristics wherever it is present. So, if you had one dominant and one recessive allele, the dominant one takes over, and that's what you can see (e.g eye colour) Recessive-allele whose characteristics only show up when it's present in both chromosomes, so if there's two recessive alleles they take over, but if theres on dominant and one recessive, dominant takes over
There are very few characteristics that are entirely down to simple allele combinations. Many characteristics that are used as examples are much more complex than they're shown to be. So I choose to use ear wax because it is one of the very few characteristics entirely down to a simple allele combination.
This man is the reason why i pass my exams.

Thank you sir! Haha, the whole time kept thinking..why ear wax?

We did eye colour.. like normal humans xD
Eye colour is controlled by multiple alleles and should not be used to illustrate crosses.

Freesciencelessons In a chemical equation do the big numbers represented the number of molecules or the number of moles?
They represent both. So they can be molecules but also, if you are working with moles, they tell you the ratio of moles taking part in the reaction.
Freesciencelessons oh OK thx 😀
Is there a way to change a person's Gene's or swap them with someone else's to change thier features ?

Does every cell have a wet or dry earwax or is it just the cells in your ears. I’m CONFUSED!! I NEED TO KNOW I HAVE AN EXAM IN TWO DAYS
Every cell has the ear wax gene but the gene is only active in the cells of your ear canal.
last minute gang :)
How am I only at this stage the night before the exam ffs
Out of all genes he chose the earwax, like why ?
Watch it again - he did say.
So is genotype is the letters showing each alleles we get from out parents? And would I get a mark for this if I use it in my exam?
Yes that's essentially correct. I would say that the genotype is the combination of alleles responsible for a particular phenotype.
even though these definitions are simple, would I still get the marks if I wrote them in a higher tier biology test?
Yes, these are the correct definitions required by the exam board.
@@Freesciencelessons thank you so much!! :)
Do you have to know the different types of mutations?
Not for AQA. However, they could use that as an application of knowledge question, in which case they'd have to give you some information.
Ear wax; the best example for a gene.
im gong to miss watching your videos
THANKS YOU
Is it random which allele is dominant or are they structured to be dominant?
Whether an allele is dominant or recessive is determined by the base sequence of the gene but essentially it's random. Harmful alleles tend to be recessive as if they were dominant, they would cause harmful effects even if present in only one copy.
Sir can you define the term 'dominant allele' thankyouu
A dominant allele will be expressed in the person's phenotype (characteristics) even if there's only one copy present.
Name 1 The phenotype is not just characteristics, it is the physical characteristics
How can you identify which allele is dominant?
capital letter is dominant (eg "E")
lowercase is recessive (eg "e")
Capital letter?
Thanks

What is phenotype
The set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment.
Basically, the *visible outcome* of what the genotype is.
physical appearance of an organism
Gwarnnnn sunshine !!!
I want to see a trap remix of this, called ear wax
i really didn't get the dominant and recessive part...
So, if you had one dominant and one recessive allele, the dominant one takes over, and that's what you can see (e.g eye colour)
Recessive-allele whose characteristics only show up when it's present in both chromosomes, so if there's two recessive alleles they take over, but if theres on dominant and one recessive, dominant takes over
Which exam board is this video series for?
aqa
Actually u can use it for all boards
am i the only one who watches his videos on x2 the night before the exam?
why would he use earwax as an example instead of like eye colour
There are very few characteristics that are entirely down to simple allele combinations. Many characteristics that are used as examples are much more complex than they're shown to be. So I choose to use ear wax because it is one of the very few characteristics entirely down to a simple allele combination.
